On the top right of the page there is a Search Box which I have never noticed, where you can search the topics for a particular discussion. So many times I have racked my brain and spent ages trying to remember/find where I saw a particular mention of something...now I see there is a search box for that. Please tell me it hasn't always been there (⊙_☉)

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments On another note...

Only an hour ago I went searching the (local) web for USB powerpoints, a great invention to replace an existing powerpoint with which also has USB ports in it for charging all of our digital appliances in one...or two...places, but I digress... Right after leaving that site and returning here to GR, I find the very same powerpoints, from the very same site I was looking at, advertising on the page I was viewing here!
Which made me feel relieved that I hadn't been looking at anything more "exciting" than powerpoints!!!
But which also had me wondering why that caricature of a fat lady on a treadmill is the usual advertising fare on my page!! ⊙△⊙

I once searched for support stockings for my mother and for weeks afterwards I was inundated with advertising for things like incontinence wear and hearing tests. Google is everywhere:)

a. Never use own computer to search for things such as: treadmills, support stockings, incontinence wear or things of a personal nature...use sombody else's! ;)

b. Always use own computer to search for things such as: bikini's, expensive perfumes, nice clothes, travel destinations, books! :)

Well, since I complained about a couple of the adds, they have never shown up again on my pages. I just click on the little x in the box at the top right corner of the adds and get a pull down menu...I usually opt for "inappropriate" and bingo ;)
*You do have to wait until the x shows though.

It's eerie how that happens isn't it! Whenever I search for accommodation, there is always a box on the RHS for the same group and telling me there are lots more bargains in ***** (where I was looking!) lol Big Brother! **cue creepy music**

Me too Sally! What with the price of shrinkwrap these days, My pension wouldn't cover the cost of the treatment! I would have to buy shares in the company ;)

Carolyn | 9867 comments I've missed all the chatter today on unwanted ads. I get the one with the woman wrapping her face in plastic all the time as well as a host of other anti wrinkle treatments. I reckon Google knows my age bracket as I've never looked up anti-wrinkle treatments (though perhaps I should!)

message 21739: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 89 comments No Veronica - she lives in MY suburb!

Gasp! They wouldn't be manipulating the ad so we all see her from our own towns? How clever! Creepy - but clever.

Cookies are so convenient at times but so annoying for other things. If only we could manipulate them to only remember what we want them to.

But now, I know how to banish her, thanks Julie!

Yep! And I actually clicked through to one of the ad sites that actually promotes the ads..They actually allowed you to switch them off OR so they wouldn't show exactly what you were searching.

I've a funny story but it's not PG...lol

Well here in Tassie we've been told we could possibly get snow in town...It hasn't happened here since I was TWO and I'm now 30..sooo I think it's bucklees chance.

Ahh, this is the reason I don't know much about it then. Thank you :) Yeah, I hope this doesn't change much as GR is great as it is but still things often change when a bigger company get their claws into a smaller site :(

message 21750: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (Mel’s Bookshelf) (melsbookshelf) | -37 comments Yes that's a shame I really hope they don't do too much with it. They could fix up the app a bit though with all that $$ they have! It's awful!! ;-)
