Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments Before this week is through, just wanted to say..

It has been incredibly sad and heartbreaking to witness the hostage situation in Sydney this week and to know the absolute heartbreak that those hostages and their families must be going through, especially the ones that lost their lives...God bless them.

Like many others, I have been very emotionally affected by those events and have been in a kind of fog ever since, I am just slowly trying to come to grips with what happened in our beautiful city. I find it just so incredibly hard to believe that one nutter can just walk into a place and do something like that...or moreover, that anyone would! Its unthinkable.

I keep wondering what this man thought to gain from such a despicable act, but on deeper reflection I really don't think he thought it through at all as it was so...for want of a better description..."amateurish". And that is, I think, what makes it all the more dreadful and frightening, and worrying, because there are so many people out there with an axe to grind.

I believe it is only our innocent laid back Aussie culture that has kept us relatively safe from these sort of politically motivated horrors. We thankfully don't harbour such hateful and divisive religious and political values. It is such a contradiction to cause such suffering in the name of a perceived good, and goes against everything we know to be right and good.
The angry side of me wants to scream at this man and his ilk, that, "how dare he seek and gain sanctuary in our beautiful country and avail himself of all our hospitalities and privileges..not the least of which is freedom...then abuse those freedoms to promote his vile and seemingly random ideologies."! How are we supposed to understand or sympathize with that mentality, its a total contradiction!

One stand out comment I heard last night after all that has happened and been said, was from [everybody's] Father Bob on TV, when asked what it was all about, and after expressing his deep sadness, he said that if there was any greater good to come of this sorrow, it is that it has galvanized people into reaching out to one another, and embracing those other cultures we have come to fear...often irrationally.

Maybe this is why horrible stuff like this has to happen to good people...to affect us all.
If these shocking events can effect some positive change for the greater good in our collective ethos, then those victims are truly heroes and have not suffered or died in vain.
Lets all commit to quietly doing our bit to pay it forward, in the name of everybody's God, please "give Peace a chance."

My heartfelt sympathies go to all of the victims and their families.

Well said Julie.

I think we all feel outrage that this has happened as well as sadness for the families. I feel it is a great shame that this man did what he did in the name of his religion and I do worry what effect this will have on Islamic Australians who are not radicals but peace loving people who only want a good life and education for their families.

Thanks Anna. I believe your expressed sentiments are well received by all. Thank you. Personally, I get really tired of these crazed zealots running around committing such egregious acts of violent distain against people that have only shown goodwill to them. It makes me feel sad.

message 16115: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments As Julie pointed out, I think the good part we can take from this is the show of support for each other from other nations (thanks, Anna) and from people whose faiths differ from our own. And the fact that although something like this can happen is very scary, we must stand together and rise above this, because if we judge and condemn people based on how they look and what they wear and what they believe, then our country will be filled with suspicion and hate, and will not be a very nice place to live.

Well said Jools - I have a Moslem friend here in Darwin who covers her head with the most beautiful shawls in public. She has twin baby girls and was shopping alone a few weeks back when these young idiots kept telling her to go back to India (she is Australian born of Pakistani parents) and was she hiding bombs in her baby stroller. The were really hassling her when a young Navy man is his uniform came up and told the idiots to go away then escorted Sumi as she finished her shopping and escorted her and the twins back to her car. That Navy man my friends is a true Australian. But to see the outpouring of support shows that the vast majority know who the enemy is and it is not ladies who cover the hair! It is not even the 95% of Muslims who live their life peaceabley - it is the radical minority who are even killing people of their own faith who don't agree with them.

It wasn't an ISIS flag - that was established very quickly after the media flooded us with that idea - it WAS an Islamic flag - Arabic writing on a black banner ( the first words of the muslim prayer - There is no God but Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.")represents a general expression of faith in Islam, BUT has been adopted by various jihadist groups as a battle flag.

I do hope that this will be it - but there is a genral call out among those groups to get us - so sadly I think you're right

Kathryn I went in to one of about twenty coffee shops we have in our suburb where you order at the counter and get a table number. They were so busy they had run out of numbers but kept on taking orders. You can imagine the disaster that ensued. One lady waited 45 minutes for a small flat white:)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Bit late, but yeah it wasn't an ISIS flag (he actually asked for Tony Abbott to bring him one), it was a pretty bog standard islamic prayer flag which quite a lot of muslims would just have.

Neko I'm officially on holidays and also unemployed...Holidays are good..The unemployment not so good.

I've been dropping in here very off and on during this week but being more of a "lurker" than poster.

I'm going to bow out until Feb unless I get the chance to post...But starting tomorrow I'm going away (possibly will take photos) up the coast of Tassie...And then in Jan I'm going to be in Italy for the whole month. I will still be reading and possibly updating through my Kindle (the new updates to the Kindle).

Anyhoo's...All I wanted to say was...I hope you all have a great Christmas and a safe New Year! Remember to gobble up the food, kick up your feet, take a moment for yourself - breath and try and enjoy this "crazy" time of the year! And of course if you can find that spare moment read to your hearts content!

See ya'll later :)!!
