Thank you, thank you, Laura, for bringing up this topic. People today are so glued to their phones, it makes me wonder "can't anybody do anything without a damn phone in their hand?" Having coffee, walking down the street, while in shops (my pet hate), at the dining table; sheesh, it makes me so irritated.

@Alex You poor thing!

LOL! LOL! I love it - spluttered coffee all over the screen when I read that :)

I hate this too - I actually read a YA dystopean book that builds on this habit - The Last Girl by Michael Adams - he has everyone so connected to their mobile phones and computers that they become one with their technology and have a massive information overload and 'crash' - imagine millions of people all over the world lapsing into unconciousness (after violent reactions to hearing everyone thoughts with a wide range - all at once)and no one around to bring them around - so no food or water - they don't last for long.

I looked around the food hall here at our shopping mall that day and I could really, really believe it. Everyone almost seemed attached to their phones. Anyhow if you're into dystopean I recommend this series - set in Sydney by and Aussie author. Very different end of the world scenario :)

I think I'll look into that book Sally, and give it to my girls to read. Although they will probably think it's a comedy.

Actually that's a great idea Veronica, I've got a 13yo that would be perfect for.. Good book suggestion Sally :)

message 14556: by Neko (new)

Neko @Sally - You've made me add a book to my TBR! Oh no! Lol But really that does sound like an interesting book.

Well, it's good to see I'm not the only one crazy with dislike about the over usage of phones these days! They're even saying the use of Tablets from a very, very young age is causing problems with children because they're more likely to be plonked infront of tablet nowdays than the TV...And because they are SO easy to port around the place it makes it worse...They've said that children aren't learning how to interact or read facial clues as much due to the over use of tablets. I'm not so sure if I agree with this BUT it will be interesting down the track to even when I'm in my 60's (not even 30 yet) and see how things evolved.

I am thankful for technology for many reasons like most people are but I think a line needs to be drawn too :/

message 14557: by Suz (new)

Suz | 4439 comments Laura I agree wholeheartedly. My oldest is 13 and youngest 2 1/2, there is a HUGE difference with my experiences.. Little one knows how to use the iPad/phone (the others didn't have them) and the 13yo is constantly on her iPad and iPhone, sometimes concurrently. I've experienced all extremes and I don't like what's happening. It's a big issue in my household and I have not come up with a solution. I'm sure other parents have, but we haven't struck the right balance here yet.

message 14558: by Neko (new)

Neko I was listening to some children have an argument while I was walking from one classroom to the next and these girls were aged from 9 to 11...And one who had the outburst was complaining that her friend (from school) hadn't YET replied to her on FaceBook and she'd only left a message 5 mins ago on her account..

I was a little taken back...While I know children at those ages like the play that they are grown up and such..I was like 'Uh, isn't that a bit young to even be using FB?' I guess maybe not, I don't like it (which is now seen as a strange thing).

I've always been surrounded by tech from little...But I remember when I was about 13 (no phone tho) and there was one PC in the house...I'd share it with my sister...We had to have it 'timed' on us..So one wouldn't over use it. It felt horrible being timed and such but it worked for the most part.

Still, if they've got their own it makes it harder to monitor I guess. I'm not so sure with iPads but I know PS4 and XBOXs have parental settings and it locks the kid out once they've reach a limit...I for some strange reason think the Kindle can do it too..lol No idea how well those things work though.

The "legal" age to use FB is the same as here Laura - 13 years old!!! But some parents don't seem to care what their children are exposed to on the internet. It gives me the horrors!!

Yes, they have to falsify their ages and birthdays to even sign up. Not a great example of honesty to be modelling to the kids.

Add to that the issues of lack of understanding about the stuff you post online being there forever...it's a recipe for disaster.

Have to agree Brenda. But this person refuses to have anything to do with FB. Not even my adult kids could convince me on that one.

message 14562: by Suz (new)

Suz | 4439 comments Uh oh. I just discovered Booko.. (I saw Liam chatting about it here somewhere, thanks) Free post.. Finds me the cheapest source. I don't normally buy books new and purchased 4. But had a few specific ones I wanted to buy. I wonder if it's addictive? Oh no!

message 14563: by K (new)

K | 1143 comments I love FB, but of course that age is way too young and there ought to be strict rules for kids. Some parents just don't care so much about discipline these days.

Hahaha..No, no...It's perfectly fine to enjoy all social media that online provides! :)

I just grew up around IMing and posting on chatboards (sorta like this one) and then I have a FB like site but for gaming....So, really, I do use SM quite a bit but I just don't use the highly, highly popular ones in that respect (I guess you could say)
