Is it all out with no damage (other than the usual I mean!)?

message 14702: by Neko (new)

Neko They said it was no more of a threat but checking today (this morning) for flair ups.

But yeah damage was done and people were evacuated from the areas!

Oh wow! Very serious!! So sad - this time last year we had raging bushfires here - the Blue Mountains were devastated and it was snowing there last week!! Australia's weather is all over the place....

Thanks for posting the link Laura!

Midnights_Darling -The Emo Kittie (theemokittie) So very true Australian weather is all over the place!

message 14705: by Neko (new)

Neko And yet the government doesn't think there is a thing called 'global warming'....

Ugh.

Yeah, I remember about the Blue Mts last year...It's so different from this year..It's crazy I think!

Spring to me is the windy season with some unpredictable weather but not in the sense of snow or bush fires.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Laura wrote: "And yet the government doesn't think there is a thing called 'global warming'...."

The government also thinks that poor people don't drive cars, and that cutting off financial assistance for 6 months after leaving school will make school-leavers "more independent", so I'd say disbelieving in global warming goes right along with that.

Great choice of leader, Australia.

message 14707: by Neko (new)

Neko They relaxed the laws on the people leaving school..At least they did here. But yeah, everything you mention is true...It's a sorry state of affairs.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I'm awake before 10am what is this

RIP Gough Whitlam! "Well may we say 'God save the Queen', because nothing will save the Governor-General!"

What a line. 98 years old too.

message 14733: by Suz (new)

Suz | 4439 comments I really enjoyed listening to stories of Gough Whitlam this morning, and that line also! David Williamson talked about how much he'd done for Australia's art and culture in grants etc and free education, lots of people saying if it hadn't been for him they'd not have gone to uni. Very interesting to hear about the impact he had on so many lives.

I met him many, many years ago in the 70s - I was engaged to a local Newcastle boy whose father ran for Parliament (and won) the year I first voted. he was a labor man - my family was strictly Liberal. I had no preferences either way. I was being persuaded by both the candidate and my father on who to vote for. We went to a big labor party dinner just before the election that Gough got in at and I was introduced to Gough by the candidate laughingly as "this is my future daughter-in-law who will be voting labor or there will be no wedding" I shook the great man's hand and laughingly replied "then I had better hock the engaement ring" Gough roared with laughter and put his arm around me and said he loved my attitude and always stay true to my convictions. I have treasured that advice and although the wedding didn't go through - but not for that reason.

Regardless of your politics - and politics is something best not ventured into in a public forum - but Gough was such a character I think all admired him.

Yeah, generally, it's the older tradies who are the best. It seems to be some of young guys nowadays that are giving tradies a bad rep. It's such a shame, because my Dad's generation are hard, honest workers.

We had to get the ceiling of our rental house redone and the state they left the place in was so horrendous, we had to get the real estate to call them back to tidy up properly. I talked to my dad about it and showed him photos and he said if he had done that as an apprentice, he would have had his bum kicked and that it is part of their job to leave the place better than they found it.

I was another Marianne who would never have got a degree only for that initiative. HECS came in when I was almost through and that was a struggle.
