Take care and stay safe, Bette. According to the CFA FireReady app, there's currently 181 fires/incidents across Victoria. Fortunately, we haven't had any further outbreaks here.

message 10514: by Elaine (new)

Elaine | 2001 comments I've just managed to convince my husband to let me use his work computer to catch up on news here on GR. Congratulations Sally and thanks for agreeing to take on the responsibility of keeping us in line, along with all the other lovely moderators in this group. I'm sure you'll do a fantastic job. As some of you know I'm on holidays here in Phillip Island Vic but am quite anxious about the fires back home and around most of the State ,as well as fires around other parts of Australia. I hope and pray that anyone affected stays safe and out of harms way. My daughter(19yrs) was unable to come away with us due to work commitments so am a bit worried about her. Fortunately she's staying with a friend. So our holiday is a bit bitter sweet but I'm still managing to relax and read which is nice. No cooking, no cleaning and no work which is bliss.

Try not to worry too much Elaine. Hopefully all the fires will be extinguished pretty soon with the change that's supposed to be coming through either today or tomorrow. Have a lovely time:)

That sounds wrong now I read it back - you know what I mean? Half as good? One shoe? I meant to be funny. Think I had better go to bed.

message 10525: by Yan (new)

Yan | 7 comments I enjoyed reading The Book Thief but just going by memory the story is pretty mundane (for Nazi Germany) but in a good way.

Wonder if the ending is that same.

Did anyone ask Markus if The Book Thief was based on his mum's life?

message 10526: by Yan (new)

Yan | 7 comments Man, I'm pretty on fence about that ending.

Thought it kinda of a good way to show what a country is like at war but kinda of an emotional manipulative cop-out.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) So that was my longest shift ever. Phone line was out, and so by extension, our internet, check-in, wi-fi, public PCs, photocopier and catalog were all offline as well.

Had one asshole come in and after being told our public PCs and internet were down he swore at us and said "Well I hope you'll be donating your pay back to the government then you lazy prick", to which I replied "It isn't our fault that the phoneline is down. You could always borrow a book sir, that's pretty much all we can do today. And borrowing books is the traditional use for libraries" (I impress myself sometimes) and he called me an insolent little shit and told my manager on me.

After he left my manager said he couldn't care less what the dude thought. Love my work sometimes. But jesus christ that was a slooooooooooooooooooow 3 hours.

message 10535: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Tell me about it. So many rude people at work today. I've been told on to the manager before, but I find she often just doesn't care.
