It's been really hot here in Melbourne too and we've had quite a bit of fire activity near us. We weren't able to go home until late last night due to a fire in Kangaroo Ground which directly impacted us. They've managed to contain the fire but it's still going and with the temperature expected to reach 44 here tomorrow...it's scary!!! Fortunately we leave tomorrow for 5 days in Phillip Island, which is a relief but I'm still anxious.

message 10456: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6949 comments Hope you are all kept safe Elaine. Bushfires are scary. We had our first encounter with one close by last year. Thankfully it didn't come as close as expected.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) It's official - I have heat brain; usually signified by hot weather and making the most utter mess of tasks I can ordinarily excel at.

37C expected here so it's probably safest if I just sit today!

message 10459: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Sitting sounds like a good plan to me, Bette! Are your visitors arriving soon? Or already here? You can have a Downton marathon while you ride ou the heat! (Not a great Australian welcome for them!)

Thanks Dale. Yes it's definitely scary especially when the warning advice includes your suburb. I know a lot of people go through this every year. It's part of living in this gorgeous country of ours. I'll be happy when they say that the fire has been put out as at the moment they're just containing it.

message 10461: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Yes - stay safe, Elaine. Maybe you should have a little bushfire bag packed with your essentials that you can grab and go if worse comes to worst...

message 10462: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Although I'm sure it won't, but it never hurts to be organized.

Stay safe and please go if you're told to - don't be brave. You can replace 'stuff' but you can't replace people!!

Having said that - are the books are packed in the car in case a quick getaway needed along with other important stuff? ;)

Thanks Kathryn and Sally. We're actually going away for a few days so that will be good. But after my family and our cat, the most important things are my books but I know I can't take them all.As it is I'm only taking two away with me. The other day when the Kangaroo Ground fire broke out I was at work and a customer told me about it. When I checked on all the family members and the cat, my very next thought was "oh no I don't even have a book with me and what will happen to all my books?" I know that materialistic things aren't important, you're right Sally, people are but I still can't help thinking, how will I ever replace my books? That's decades of collecting. I'd have to start from scratch.

message 10465: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Maybe you need to order (very quickly) a very large fire-proof safe, Elaine ;-) And while, as Sally said, any loss of life is tragic, the loss of "things" can still be heart-breaking... Do you have anyone keeping an eye on your place while you're away, Elaine?

Yes Rochelle, we all seem to agree, maybe I am showing my age, but we can't have everything we wanted equality, we got it so we should be opening doors for each other, just being or showing kindness won't hurt any of us in this busy world.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) So today, Adelaide is the hottest city in the entire world. And it is the hottest day in Adelaide since 1939.

It's shocking isn't it! But finally common sense has prevailed and they've stopped the tennis in Melbourne! I thought they were going to wait until someone died before they acted!

Vicki Tyley (vickityley) | 1732 comments It's still hot, hot, hot here. I've spent the best part of the day replenishing the water bowls for the poor panting birds.

Tomorrow for us is going to be an "extreme" fire danger day. We've already had a couple of fires (Murrindindi) too close (6kms) for comfort. Fingers crossed there are no more lightning strikes.

Take care Vicki! The southern parts of Australia are certainly suffering:( Our temps have been 37 today, but Saturday is set to go over 40 "they" say! I certainly hope it doesn't, but also I'm sure it will!

Stay safe...

message 10484: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Tyley (vickityley) | 1732 comments Will do, Brenda. Saturday is actually when we're expecting the cool change to come through. Tomorrow will be day 5 of temps over 40C, so definitely looking forward to Saturday.

We have air con (struggling as it is), but I do worry about the wildlife. The magpies and rosellas are so zonked that you can walk up to them and they don't move.

Take care and stay cool.

I have my kindle, Sally! And I've popped two new books on it to add to the (embarrassingly large figure) already on there, given I've only had it about 18 months...

I'll also be finalising the edits for my second book. The file arrived (of course!) a week ago :) Timing is everything!

An Announcement

It is with great pleasure that I would like to announce our newest moderator to the group - Sally906 (also known as Sally)

As you all know Mish has decided to step down as moderator but will be remaining active within the group. She will remain as a mod for a little while as we all help Sally get settled into her role.

We are all excited to have Sally as a part of the team, and I'm sure you'll all support her while she finds her feet.

Congratulations Sally!
