B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Just finished watching The Tudors dvds. Henry Cavill (Duke of Suffolk in the show) has got to be my current lust-throb:)

It was a great book - have just finished reading it. And she's a Lake Maquarie girl!

Been many a year since I've been to Charlestown library. Last time I went it was still in Smart street and there was no Charlestown Square :)

Are you serious Sally??? No Charlestown Square?? OMG! I thought that was an institution;) The library is still in Smart Street though:)

I'm glad you enjoyed Kaz's book, I haven't read any of hers before, but she's such a vibrant, caring and humble lady. I hope I enjoy it too:)

I use to live in a house which is directly under the square. We were told to move in 1970 as was scheduled for demolition for the shopping centre. We moved to Redhead, where my mum still lives, the demolition didn't start until 77 or 78, think it opened 1979.

Haven't been back to the area for 10 years, is on the horizon for later this year - but will be a flying visit on our back from New Zealand. We have seen the square - but understand it is even bigger now.

Have to whole-heartedly agree with you there Bette. I watched the series a few years ago & he is still on the top of my list ;)

Have you seen the new Superman movie 'Man of Steel' ? If not, that should be next on your list :)

Just back from watching The Book Thief and listening to Markus Zusak in interview. What a nice man, and what a delightful movie! Lots of changes from the book of course but it didn't seem to matter. I'd like to find out who the reviewer was who said Death does not narrate the movie. Oh yes he does! And to great effect.

message 10411: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Glad you enjoyed The Book Thief, Phrynne - I'm still in 2 minds about seeing that one.

I just saw Saving Mr Banks and loved it! It was so funny and sweet, Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson are fantastic and now I'm thinking I'd like to read Mary Poppins, She Wrote: The Life of P. L. Travers by Valerie Lawson to see if there's more in there than was contained in the movie...

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) This weather can go $#$%^% itself. Couldn't wear my sunnies driving to work today because they were roughly 800 degrees from sitting in my glovebox.

Heard someone today say thursday is meant to be 50 degrees. Fifty.

Who was it who was making fun of me for wanting winter back, again??

Kathryn | 3569 comments Brisbane had its hot weather spell about 10 days ago - MUCH nicer now so I'm sympathising with the Adelaidians and Melbournians and anyone else suffering with high temps (and waiting for our next spell of excessive heat - I'm sure that won't be all for summer for us!). Keep up the fluids and keep an eye on family and neighbours - especially the older people...

Very hot on my beach too, 43 here at the moment, look after all your family and pets. Which beach are you near Angela? Even though it is crazy season, I kind of like it. I am at Rosebud.

I have the doors open and catching that breeze. Looks like we are going to be relatively lucky in Sydney this week. Forecasts say we won't get the 40 degree plus of Adelaide and Melbourne. Feel for you guys and girls down south!

Great for reading :)

I hate the heat, am feeling so bad for being cool while everyone else is overcome.

Not to worry though your heat wave will break and we'll get boiling hot again :)

I wish we could have some of your rain Sally. The poor ground is crunchy when you walk on it, and the plants are gasping! But I don't think I'd like the monsoon either, that'd be scary!

message 10432: by Sally906 (last edited Jan 14, 2014 03:04AM) (new)

Sally906 | 89 comments Monsoons are fine. It's just the in increased threat of cyclones that's the worry. Mind you some of the storms that hit down South with very little warning are even scarier. At least we get lots of warning to prepare for cyclones

message 10433: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80178 comments Mod
Well that's good! At least everything is better prepared since Cyclone Tracy!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Well I just spent half an hour being lectured by a girl I know who found it sexist and deeply insulting to her as someone graced with breasts that I open doors for women if I'm ever in a position to do so.

I don't even... um, that's courtesy. I hold doors open for people *all the time*, and I'm female. Tell her to go read about male privilege if she wants to do something constructive.

message 10438: by Faye (new)

Faye (lastchapter) | 409 comments Good Morning All, hope you all had a good night where ever you may be, gosh this weather is so vast. We had such hot weather here yesterday, then stormy thunder and lightening last night, a fire which destroyed the cafe of an historic homestead, but the homestead was saved. I hear some of you have rain, and others have monsoons! We now have very dark clouds, thunder in the distance. Best wishes wherever you may be. Stay safe

Liam, you have nice manners for opening doors for women. Don't change, I for one appreciate little things like that. My husband and I always hold doors open for people, I am always happy when a man holds a door open for me. However, I also hold doors open for both men and women. Both my children now 16 & 18, male and female, always hold doors open for people. Most of the time people are grateful, as I am. Now you know you will be in trouble for the feminist comment, however, I agree sometimes they go too far. Keep up the door holding, I appreciate it.One other thing does annoy me though, when you do hold doors open and nobody says a simple thankyou.

She might be a female, but she isn't a lady.

My son had a similar experience and was quite put out, because he thought he was being a gentleman - told him to remain a gentleman and to ignore ignorance.

You can open the door for me anytime Liam :)

To be fair though if I get to the door first I will hold it open for men.

message 10444: by Geoff (new)

Geoff Woodland | 313 comments I agree Sally that commonsense has to reign - leaving a lift before a female makes sense, if the male is by the door.
The one thing that has gone by the wayside is lighting a lady's cigarette - very un-PC to carry a lighter / matches - not to mention a packet of fags :-o)

As for the weather, even getting high 30's down here in little old Tassie at the moment. Was still 29 at 9 o'clock last night. Melting!!!! Although there's some cloud cover today, so might not make it to the expected 38. Thank God!!!
