Brenda, your daughter is wonderful; older animals are so often not wanted by new owners. Everyone wants a puppy or a kitten. Holly is beautiful!

I have two boxers but every afternoon, I go to our RSPCA and take the rescue dogs for a walk. It's something that anyone with the spare time can do. I worked at RSPCA when I was in my 20s and now that I've stopped work, I can do something to help the animals again.

I'm also the proud adopted mother of Ooshi, a sun bear. She was rescued from a bile farm in India and now resides in a sanctuary in Thailand. It's through the WWF based in Perth.

What a lovely, thing to walk the dogs, I wish the shelter was closer as that is something I would do, happily.

message 10008: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments All this talk of dogs has got me really missing my two little angels. I had a bad run with dogs for a while, first my adored Keeshond Shayla passed away from old age and after a while I bought two gorgeous little Tibetan Spaniels, a white one called Angel and a black one called Pippa. Angel developed skin cancer and the vet, well all the vets, I saw said the kindest thing would be to put her to sleep so after many, many tears I did it. Then only two short months later Pippa got sick, she seemed listless and was obviously in pain so off to the vet we go - turned out she never developed properly and her organs were all too small to support life, again I was told the kindest thing to do was put her to sleep. I haven't even looked at a dog since, the very thought just breaks my heart but I do miss having a dog. Don't get me wrong, I love my cat Dax, he's a beautiful, big Manx cat and I adore him but I miss having a dog as well and I do think Dax could probably do with a friend as well. Aaah well...

message 10009: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6949 comments That's the trouble, we become so attached to our fur friends. They become part of the family.

That's a very sad story Tracey. I can understand you not wanting to put yourself (and an animal) through that again!

Vicki Tyley (vickityley) | 1732 comments Bette, my better half worked for RSPCA Victoria for ten years, commuting three hours every day. Here’s my favourite photo of “my boys”. Paris, the Great Dane, was an RSPCA surrender dog (the owner was returning to the US and could only afford to take one of his Danes with him). Paris was with me 24/7, even going on holiday with us. It broke our hearts when we lost him. We still can’t bring ourselves to adopt another…

I know it is heartbreaking but they are so cute. I was missing my dog that's why I got another, maybe I have bitten off a bit extra, her being only 14 months but I have decided to take her training. Go on Tracey go and save one.

message 10015: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Tyley (vickityley) | 1732 comments He was Brenda. The name always trips people up. I think most think of blonde, rich and female when they hear it. Paris is a male name, too. He used to be called Vegas (his house brother Boston), but the RSPCA recommend you change the name for better bonding. And since his father was Parisienne Nights and sticking with the themes of cities, we called him Paris. :)

message 10016: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80174 comments Mod
Fair enough! Not sure why I thought Paris was female...probably Paris Hilton :/

message 10017: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Tyley (vickityley) | 1732 comments Everyone does, Brenda. In hindsight, we probably would've chosen a less blonde name. :)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments The tree was originally decorated quite nicely, and its branches were neat and upstanding. Most of the baubles are on the floor now, and there are spots where the branches have a distinct sag on them.

This is Nosey, otherwise known as monster kitten. You can see him twelve months younger (also up the tree) in my profile pick when he was just a tiny kitten. Couldn't keep him out of the tree then, and can't keep him out now.

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments He is cute, but somewhat naughty - his name suits him I'm afraid. He's the complete extrovert, and can't bear not knowing who's at the door. He's the only cat we've had who runs to the door to see who's coming to visit.
