Thanks Brenda. I find watching movies of books I've read and enjoyed can be a bit hit and miss but so far with The Hunger Game movies I haven't been disappointed. I do recall seeing the movie version of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and being disappointed. I did see the trailer for The Book Thief which looked good. I just hope they do the book justice.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Sad to hear the news about Nelson Mandela. He was not just a great figure of Africa, he was a great figure of the world. He showed us all that much can be achieved by peaceful means. A true gentleman.

Angela | 351 comments JennaKay it is a fickle summer this year for us! Air conditioning one day and snow on the mountains the next. The sun is shining today though.

Is it looking pretty and white in your end?

message 9962: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Unexpected expenses at my house yesterday. About 7am, Poppy (kitten) lost use of back legs, I phone the vet and meet her at clinic, sedation, x-rays, painkillers and $450 later - she has dislocated her hips!

I'm still in shock; this is nearly half what I put aside for my 4 nieces and nephews for Christmas! Back to the savings account for me today:(

Oh dear, poor Poppy! She would have been in pain too:(

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Yeah my cat Tally dislocated her leg at some stage, popped back in on its own but it's still a bit funny and she walks a bit crooked sometimes. Didn't know this at the time, just knew that she was limping really heavily. $500 for an X-ray and sedation for it.

Still, at least now we know what's wrong - I paid for it all myself (mum and I usually split vet stuff) because mum thought it was stupid to get her checked. Better safe than sorry, I think :/

Brought it to the vet, turn out she is a he with some Krystal blockage that need surgery immidiately. See, the problem is that the first vet when we got him/her told us that it is a she. of course, it has been desex before we got it..

No idea at all She's an indoor cat and five minutes before, she was playing happily in the bathroom while I was in the shower.

Vet called yesterday 11am. Additional x-ray shows she has fractured the top of the femur! They have to take out top of femur, it won't repair by itself and she'll always be in pain otherwise. Cost $1075; I nearly died. But what can I do? I couldn't say 'no', she's my little shadow. She comes home today :)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Bette you have my full sympathy. Vet bills can be so over the top but what can we do? I know I could never leave any of my babies in pain and somehow I've always managed to find the money somewhere.

If only I could find an easy fix for my rotten back - other than having to have the surgery that is. I've been putting in a lot of hours at the keyboard lately so now I'm paying the price with a seized nerve in my back - thank heaven for pain killers :)

Oh dear Bette! That's such a terrible price! I wonder what happens for people who really can't pay? There would have to be a lot of them out there. I hope they'd offer an alternative (other than putting the animal down of course!)

I have a friend who paid thousands of dollars to get chemotherapy for a dog with cancer. He died anyway. I actually thought it would have been kinder to put the dog down in that case.

I'm with you Phrynne. I had a friend who did the same. Poor dog was throwing up blood and all sorts. Really suffered. My friend knew it was terminal, but she just couldn't bear to give up without a fight.

@Brenda They offer that you can pay by the month which is good. Apparently, a lot of vets offer this repayment plan. I hate a debt so I just paid it.

@Phrynne I agree; it's awful to prolong a pet's suffering for your own sake.

@Vicki Santa Bette already bought pressies; anyway I would have hated to deprive them. I had enough money for Poppy; a vet bill just was not what I'd planned on using it for.

Poppy's home now, stumping around the house, walking like a drunk! Her mama is happy she's home:) You know, human's don't get up and walk after surgery like this!

Faye (lastchapter) | 409 comments Vet bills can add up, I have just rescued another dog from the animal shelter, I do this from time to time, I lost my last dog to old age - 3 months and I miss him so much - I went to animal protection and saved another German Shepherd - she is 14 months, been mistreated, not a mean bone in her body, very anxious and nervous, needs lots of love attention and a good feed because her last owner obviously did not feed her properly. Long road ahead she needs to learn to trust, but I have had her three days and she now knows we walk in the morning. So all that said and done. Most of the shelters have their own vet clinics - they are much cheaper than the local vet and all the money made goes into the shelter - thought some of you may be interested in this - worth checking your local area. An example of this - I had to get a guinea pigs desexed - rang around for prices ranged from $200-$400 local shelter did it for $80.00 and kept him for observation overnight, which the others were not going to do. Just thought I would put it out there.

Good on you Faye for going and rescuing a dog from a shelter. I'm a big believer in saving animals from shelters. Your new German Shepard has found a wonderful home with you and in time she will learn to love and trust again and yes it will be a long road ahead but so worth it in the long run. How and why people miss treat animals I will never know and it makes me angry. But thank goodness for animal shelters and local rescuers.
By the way Faye what is your dogs name?

message 9984: by Faye (last edited Dec 10, 2013 04:20PM) (new)

Faye (lastchapter) | 409 comments Thank you Sharon, my new dog's name is Lexi and she is a Black German Shepherd, she actually reminds me of one of my other dogs who I rescued and had similar treatment, I had her for 14 years and she never barked or growled.

message 9985: by Sharon (new)

Sharon | 5509 comments Lexi is a lovely name did you name her or was that already her name? 14 was a really good age for your other dog. Keep us posted on Lexi's progress as she sounds like a beautiful dog. Yes I'm a dog lover but I like all animals.

Congratulations Faye, I wish there were more people around who could do what you've done. My daughter is actually in the process of getting a rescue dog. Little Holly's owner passed away and she is 13 years old. A silky terrier mix and because of her age, she is having trouble finding an adoptive home. So Melissa will love and care for her for as long as she has left on this earth, and she will be a happy little girl:) (Holly!) Melissa is happy too!

Oh how sad that Holly's owner passed away. But she's very lucky to have found your daughter Brenda :) Hopefully Holly has a few more years left in her. What's her health like Brenda?

message 9988: by Faye (new)

Faye (lastchapter) | 409 comments Brenda, that is really good that your daughter is taking Holly, it is a rewarding feeling, but it doesn't make it easier when they pass away. But in only a few days I can see the difference in Lexi. What a nice chrissy present for your daughter to give Holly. Holly will know she is in good loving home. Well Done to Melissa.

Thanks guys! Melissa is so excited:) Her health is good overall Sharon, she has just (6 weeks ago) had her teeth out (she has 3 left in the front) and she has a cough which has been checked out thoroughly. The vet has found nothing wrong with her, and the cough is due to a loosening trachea (I think) which happens sometimes in older dogs.

She enthralled us with her talk, plus we enjoyed a lovely dinner with Bron, Michelle Douglas (whom I met for the first time! What a lovely lady!) and a few other ladies.
