Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments So annoying - our town is having an Internet issue - none for most of yesterday and now vanished again (since 4pm). It's much harder to browse Goodreads on a phone!

*snicker* (We came to NSW from WA, and our son still plays real footy)

Dale Harcombe | 6949 comments I was born in NSW and only follow real footy ie AFL too. My husband used to follow league till he met me. Now he is only AFL.

Clearly, what with the four AFL teams across NSW and QLD.

I moved to Melbourne and hate AFL haha thats what I meant about moving to the wrong state ahaha

Maureen aka The Scribbly Bark Poet Clifford (TheScribblyBarkPoet) It was a great game - well played by both sides - shame about the idiot streaker at the end - score him a 2 out of 10 - but the Queenslands got their 8 straight games fulfilling Artie Beetsons earlier prediction. Artie would be cheering the loudenst saying Winners are Grinners I reckon. Sadly though it seems NSW is not prepared to fly the flag from the bridge - sour grapes perhaps?

STATE OF ORIGIN

Spanning the harbour is a coat hanger
that reaches from side to side
and atop its iron stanchions there is a flag
flying with pride…

It’s Maroon . It flies o’er Sydney
their Bridge shares its metal dome
Queensland won the State of Origin,
their blokes took the Trophy home.

It is interesting to read the reviews of this book. In general the ones who thought it was written by a new writer were very impressed by it. People who know who really wrote it are influenced by their knowledge. I can understand why she tried to keep it a secret. I liked it and hopefully have a new series to look forward to!

It's also sad about all the cynics out there who think it's only because of who she is (now they know) that the book is either leaning one way or the other..

I'm sure that's why the one author uses their full name for one genre, the initials with surname for another genre and so on. It's a good idea I think:)

I agree, though pen names often do come out, but most often a lot later in the life of the book/s.

Sharon Robards (sharonrobards) | 944 comments Makes me wonder why he disclosed it to his wife's friend...mmm and not his wife?...or was it really the wife who disclosed it...to the friend???? I am a little puzzled that he gave away such important information to not the closest person to him...his wife - that he chose her friend.

that said, I have another book coming out next year, and really, I already know that most readers of the last don't like the next, so clearly it needs to be put out as a different name, to save the heartache of readers being disappointed that the style is so very different than the historical (although still considered a historical but a different period)

Such and act causes past readers to be lost, and needing to start at scratch for new readers, but marketing wise, I don't think there is a clear cut solution.

My daughter, who loved the Harry Potter books, certainly won't like the new books put out by Rowling, so I think, as has been normal in the publishing industry for years, if you write different genres, or have a book that doesn't sell in the same genre, you need a new name. That becomes a necessity in many cases because of reader expectations.

I guess that is also why the publishing industry likes writers who stick to the same genre so that an author brand can be built up, but some, a few writers don't like to be caged in, so hence a new identity emerges.

No Rowling published under a different name so that people could read it with fresh eyes and not try to compare it to her other works. Have people judge and read the book for its content, rather than name, if you will.

Actually it received quite a few good reviews, regardless of it not hitting the best sellers list before her identity was revealed.

Twelve months ago. I loved living there; the weather, the people, everything. We lived right opposite the beach, took the dogs across every morning for a swim and a walk. I made great friends; I miss them a lot. Spent three days a week in Berry at my friend's patchwork shop - sewing, of course.
Down here, I'm also opposite the beach but damn, it's chilly in winter:(

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Something that's really annoying me at the moment is this huge movement to boycott the Ender's Game film because Orson Scott Card is a pretty big figure in the anti-gay movement over in America.

It's just so idiotic.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) You can protest his beliefs without protesting his creative work. Horrible people create great art all the time, it doesn't mean their art is thus invalid.

Just depresses me because of how amazing Ender's Game is.

As far as I am aware there is no indication of his beliefs regarding homosexuality in his science fiction books. Unless I am very slow and I missed something! I think the film is out in October???

Yeah that's my point, if the novels were laced with anti-gay propaganda, I could understand it, but they have nothing to do with his beliefs at all.
