Hayley Stewart (haybop) | 77 comments I'm from Rainham, Kent and - via Tunbridge Wells, Scotland, Belfast, Scotland again & High Wycombe - I'm back in the Medway area, Gillingham, with it's small (very small) library :(

message 311: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm from Gillingham in Kent within the Medway area. i do really need to start using the library there but i dont know many authors names within the fantasy fiction books. and since they categorize it like that its annoying ><. I do love books tho ^^

Our library in Gillingham in Dorset have a separate section for sci fi and fantasy, I also find the books I would like to read on GR and then go to the library website and see if I can get the book I need.

You could try the Guardian 1000 books, there is a section of Sci-fi/fantasy books. Or have a look at what the Sci-fi groups here are reading or have on their bookshelf.

Shelley (shelleylea) | 30 comments I'm from Poole in Dorset - my library also shelves by author, with one tiny little shelf for "horror" circa 1960's... Using GR for ideas is great, but my library doesn't seem to like books under a decade old!!

message 318: by Shelley (new)

Shelley (shelleylea) | 30 comments I've been out for a ciggie and I've come back and feel really guilty about my comment about my library. It is'nt that bad, honestly. It just feels like it.... sorry to Poole libraries...

I think all Dorset libraries are the same Shelley, our's in Gillingham isn't so good either!

message 321: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I don't tend to do second-hand books or library as I always got them after heavy smokers and it made me retch. Our library cancels your membership too, every few weeks to stop it backing up with departed students. Used to drive me nuts.

message 322: by Katie (new)

Katie (--katie--) | 69 comments My library was ok, smallishwith not the largest selection of scifi/fantasy but a good number generally. Then they had to go and modernise it, replacing the floor to ceiling bookshelves with only half-height ones. Sigh. I'm more bothered about having a wide choice of books than wide spaces and tables and chairs.

message 323: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments A friend of mine has been complaining about the modernisation of her library.

message 324: by Weenie (new)

Weenie I'm fortunate to have access to two libraries, one just a mile away, the other 7 miles away, under a single library membership. I've used them both a lot over the years but not so recently, firstly because of my Kindle but secondly because I'm trying to get through my to-be-read pile on my shelves!

I have a similar issue with both Barry and Cardiff libraries. They've both been modernized over the last few years. Sadly this seems to mean more computer and less books :(

I have really good memories of Barry Library as a kid - it was in an old Victorian building - with a separate large (at least to an 8 year old) room for the kids section. They seemed to have every Dr.Who book ever - and I quite happily eat them all up :)

message 329: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I loved Barry library! I was ever so excited when I was allowed to take a book home from the adult section! I remember it being a maze.

message 330: by Shelley (new)

Shelley (shelleylea) | 30 comments Its a shame libraries have had to change with the times - I remember the awe I used to feel as a child, going into the main library - it was a modern building, but the space, and so many books, and the silence! It's a feeling I can remember even now. I do regret not being able to enable my son to share my love of reading; but as soon as he discovered computers, he was a lost cause! And Dave, you are right about the computers - that's where the budgets obviously go nowdays.

I have fond memories of my old library as a kid, I used to be there all the time after I had finished paper round and tea! I can remember it being late opening too on most days. I loved the smell of the books and the quiet. Now as you say more computers and loads of noise!

Thankfully when I grew up my local library was one in Warrington which had a good selection of fantasy, and kids books which was all I was interested in at the time.

Ah Dr Who books. I've had to buy the ones I want to read, though at the start that was because I lived across the channel at the time.

Not read many of the new Dr Who books - but thanks to the 'wonders of the internet' I have a complete set of Target/New Adventures/Eighth Doctor books that I'm slowly working my way through (geek heaven!!)

Hallo Tim
My wife and I spent a couple of weeks in Belize when our son was stationed over there with the RAF in 1990. Not the kind of place you go to unless you like scuba diving.Other places include London (born & bred), Norfolk, Hampshire, Germany and now Spain. The Merchant Navy took me to various places around the world and I worked for a while in Saudi Arabia. Favourite place? Anywhere my wife is.

I know what you mean about Belize. I spent six months there avoiding all the things that want to bite you, sweating continuously and, at one point, being scared out of my wits by a hurricane. It has never been on my list of places to revisit.

Germany on the other hand was great and I have always wanted to go there again but never quite managed it.

I loved Belize, and would jump at the chance to go back. I spent three months there about 10 years ago, with a whole month in the cayes, diving almost every day. We camped for a lot of the time, staying in army jungle bashers (a hammock with a tarpaulin over the top to keep out the rain) out in the country and in small villages staying with local families. We visted lots of the Mayan sites like Altun Ha, Lamanai and Xunantunich, and massive nature reserves like Cockscomb Basin and Blue Hole national park. Its a beautiful place with the most amazing wildlife and people.
