Good morning all! Thanks for catching those questions, Laura! You're correct on both, latecomers can play "catch-up" by reading extra books in the first month, and actual first books, not prequels, are what counts.

Fran, if you thought The Hunger Games was horrifying you definitely shouldn't read the book that most likely inspired it - Battle Royale: The Novel. Now that is class A horror.
I'd consider that one just b/c of your "class A horror" comment, Ames, but ..... wasn't that the one that you ranked on the TOPS list b/c of an obscene amt of pages? LOL! I'm not ashamed to admit it again, I'm a chicken when it comes to picking 2x4s. :( 2011 might just be the year I'll over come that though. We shall see. :)

Thanks for the warning! I used to read books that made me uncomfortable or stretched my boundaries much more when I was younger. But as I am getting older, more romantic, light, HEA type books seem more my speed. Just a personal preference I guess. Real life adds enough stress, I need escapist fun for now.
Judithe wrote: "Do I see flashes of an idea for a new challenge..."If you say 2x4s I'm gonna whack ya with one. LOL! J/K. Horrors, yes! 2x4s, pass (as long as L³ will let me get away with it. LOL!
Challenge...something that takes effort, etc to complete...let me steal that whip before I start working on this idea...and think I'll have to tie Steph's hands up somehow... J/K!Not sure I'm up for it either, but would be a good idea! LOL!
You can run, but you can't hide....CRACK!Wait...no challenge in place...yet...so hold on the "crack"!
I will join!August
Since I'm starting in August, I'm posting two this month
September
Magic Bites or City of Ashes
Welcome, Amanda! Congrats on completing August and the later-joiner catch-up! How did you like the books? I haven't read either yet, though have debated picking up Vampire Academy...
So can we stil list bonus 1st in a series books we've read as long as we still read a new one each month? I've been on a 1st in a series kick lately. Primarily because I had all my 1st books seperated on their own shelf at the old house and that appears to be one of the boxes I grabbed from the storage unit. I have over 100 1st in a series books so no worries about running out if I read more than 1 each month.
LOL! Enjoy!!!And yes, please list bonus books! I've been tracking those, too. It's also nice to be able to ask someone about a first I've/we've been considering, or see how you like a favorite that I've/we've already read!

I really didn't like Circle of Honor. I just didn't connect with, and hence didn't care about, any of the characters which made it quite difficult to get through. To be honest I only finished it because I was reading it for a couple of challenges! However my sister has read it since and thinks it was better than I thought, so maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for it.

I can't remember Judithe--don't get out the whip...Do we do new posts with our updates on this one? I know on Steph's Seconds Challenge we update our original post, and I'm pretty sure we post new ones on yours, but I wanted to double check before I posted. :)
We (I) never stated! Either is fine...I just check the dates. And having enjoyed a reading marathon in the past two days, feeling too mellow to send a CRACK! in your direction! :)
I'm a fan of new posts, so that's what you're getting. I like to see what everyone's read, but I don't tend to go backwards and check for new updates. 2/12

New posts it is then!I've been a bad girl this month but it's not my fault, I was trying to find books 1-4 in a series to read for a challenge. I went with IAD in the end.

Go Ames! :) I'll repost when I'm not on my iPhone. Glad you were able to get a bunch of reading done. Always makes for a good day/wk.
Amy, IAD is another fave of mine, and I quite liked Ghostwalkers, too. What did you think of Handeland's book? I've seen it, but not yet clicked for TBR....
Blue Moon wasn't great. It was readable but for PNR there wasn't much romance. Sex, yes. Romance, no. I didn't like the assumption that all werewolves were bad either. I love my werewolves, how dare you say a word against them! But that just might be the first book. The series may get better but I don't know whether I'll read the next one.
LOL! OK, I'll wait til you let us know how the next one is (if you choose to read it!)...definitely prefer romance and at least SOME good werewolves!
Ended up reading 4 first in series this month, or more precisely 4.5. I started Unholy Ghost by Stacia Kane but haven't finished it yet.SOS Group Firsts Challenge
July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011
Completed: 2/12
Read 12 books, 1 per month, that are the first in a new to me series.
July Grimspace, Ann Aguirre, 7-7-10 Really liked this book. For some reason it reminded me of The Ship Who Sang by Anne McCaffrey. Most likely because of the mind merging that takes place at one point.
Also read: Stormwalker, Allyson James, 7-25-10 Good start to a new series. Fans of her dragon series will like this one too.
Killing Moon, Rebecca York, 7-29-10 Interesting take on an old legend. I wasn't fully invested in the characters for some reason. I was intrigued by the police detective secondary character so might read more if his story is featured.
August Black Dust Mambo, Adrian Phoenix, 8-8-10 I really liked this book, enough that I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series.
Also Read: Skin Game, Ava Gray, 8-17-10 The concept is interesting: Kayla can temporarily hijack anyone's best talent with a simple touch, the perfect ability for a con woman. No deep prose here, just a fun read (and lots of sex). After the first few pages, I really wasn't sure if I would even like the characters. But once I got further into the book, I was hooked. And while I was interested in how things would turn out for Kayla and Reyes, I actually found one of the secondary characters much more intriguing and I'm definitely going to read the second book in order to find out his story. Note: Ava Gray is a pen name for Ann Aguirre.
Destiny, Alex Archer, 8-21-10 I've got a few of the Rogue Angel books from when I was in Harlequin's Luna book club. This is the first time I've read any of them. Interesting enough that I'll eventually read some more, but they're not at the top of my TBR.
Covet, JR Ward, 8-23-10 Slow starter. Farther in, I became more interested in the story and it went quickly after that. Reminded me why I've taken a vacation from reading her BDB books.

I absolutely loved Slave to Sensation. I couldn't hardly put it down. I really want to grab the next one in the series and start it...like right now!
I am thinking of just forgetting about this challenge and focusing on finishing some series before the end of the year. I have too many in progress already!
southpaw285~glad to hear that! That is one of my favorite series! Always on my pre-order list!Awesomevegan~sorry to hear that, but pop in and post if you do pick up a new one, and good luck with your other series!
