Mach | 572 comments I am reading Legends a collection of fantasy short storys. The only reason i am even reading this is because of the Hedge Knight by GRRM, it was very good but i wish it was longer, i know its a short story but i am not used to reading novellas.

You really should read all the stories in Legends and Legends II, which to me is the best collection of fantasy short stories ever. It is a great way to discover all the best epic fantasy authors of our time.

I'm beginning to believe Bujold is one of those rare authors that could not write a really bad book if she tried. There are a very few that I don't have on my bookshelves to re-read (usually often) but I can't remember ever picking up a book by her that I didn't read all the way through.

Her Vorkosigan sci-fi series is outstanding, both of her fantasy series (two totally different worlds) are both exceptional as well.

message 4005: by Brett (new)

Brett (battlinjack) | 114 comments I think you're right about Bujold. Her Miles Vorkosigan series of 15 novels is fantastic. Usually when a series goes on that long it gets dry, but not hers. Each new novel is as exciting as the first.

As far as discovering fantasy authors, I really think that Ellen Datlow's 'The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror Annual Collection' series she has done with Terri Windling since 1988 is THE best anthology series out there. For Fantasy that is.

For Horror I like Stephen Jones 'The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror' series is the best.

And for Science Fiction; It would have to be Gardner Dozois' 'The Year's Best Science Fiction: Annual Collection' series.

Although it would be a close one with the 'The Year's Best Science Fiction Annual Collection' series he also puts out.

Just my self-inflated opinion.

I had this book for ages, but hadn't read it yet. But so many people love Discworld, so I finally decided to start reading. But I don't really like it... It's a bit boring, actually. I'm going to finish it, of course. I hope the other Discworld books are better.

Elizabeth Risley (ElizabethRisley) | 44 comments OMG I'm reading and throughly enjoying Percepliquis by Michael J. Sullivan. What a truly REMARKABLE book. The whole series has given me so many fond moments but the last book really does blow away all that has come before. This is one of the most intricately developed series and I highly recommend it to EVERYONE!

message 4015: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 357 comments Tim, The Color of Magic is considered by a lot of Discworld fans to be one of his weakest. Everyone has their own favorites, but mine are Mort, Wintersmith, and Witches Abroad. Meanwhile, my mom's a huge fan of Hogfather and Going Postal (which I haven't read yet). Don't lose hope yet! :D

I did some "research", and I also noticed that. I didn't expect it was that bad, though. Certainly going to read more of the series!

Dustin I've heard great things about Discworld!

message 4019: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I've read several Discworld books and I think on the whole they're hilarious. My daughter is the one who introed them to me and she's read most of not all of them. She also thinks The Color of Magic and one of the other early ones are his weakest.

I thought it was fairly funny myself and enjoyed it, but later ones were better.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I'm currently reading The Vampire's Warden. I won it and I'm not sure if I want to finish it but I will just to be able to complete the review for GR.

When I signed up for it I was assuming it was UF or something but it's starting to feel very YA. I don't read a lot of YA...it's not really my thing.

I Read the The Colour of Magic not long after it was first published so nobody really knew about Discworld then. I was just attracted to the wacky cover and totally loved it. I followed that with The Light Fantastic which i also loved (although slightly less). Then came Equal Rites which i didn't really enjoy and then came the very decent Mort which almost restored my faith in Discworld....that is until i read Sourcery (a disappointing retrun of Rincewind) then Wyrd Sisters and i'd had enough. I couldn't be bothered to read any more from the series.

I've almost picked up Guards! Guards! a couple of times because it has come so highly recommended.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I suggest you try Moving Pictures and/or Soul Music. I'm not the Discworld fan in the family (that's my daughter) but those broke me up.

message 4025: by Traci (new)

Traci I always feel like the odd fan of Pratchett. I love the Rincewind books but struggle to finish the witch ones. I think most fans of Discworld love the Death books though.

I finished another reading of A Game of Thrones. Trying to get through Wild Cards but I don't like it, even though I'm a fan of superhero stories in general. And going to start The Runelords: The Sum of All Men soon, a series I know nothing about.

I love Wild Cards, one of favorite books of all times. In the superhero story its up there with Watchman and The Dark Knigh Returns as one of the all time best of the genere.

message 4029: by Brett (new)

Brett (battlinjack) | 114 comments Wild Cards, for those who don't know, is only the first of a 22 book series. Some good, some not so good, but all a lot of fun.

Speaking of superheroes, have you read any of the Astrocity comics/books?

That is the problem with Mosiac Worlds. The quality of the stories in the books and some of the books can be spotty but overall Wildcards is an excellent series.

I've read the first five Astro City books and love them all. Kurt Busiek is just brilliant. Have you read Marvels? That is very good as are the first few volumes of his Conan graphic novels.

Kara (sterlink) | 143 comments Listening to Magic Burns as I carry on through a Kate Daniels audio binge. Loving it.

Just started reading The Hidden Goddess
The Hidden Goddess (The Native Star, #2) by M.K. Hobson , sequel to The Native Star (which I loved) and it's nice to be back.

Gearing up for the February group read The Alloy of Law as well. Bought the audio... I listened to all of Mistborn and I have been missing Micheal Kramer's voice. Just trying to decide if I have time to finish with Kate Daniels first. (It may go on the backburnner, I really have been binge listening... that's like what, 5 units a day?)

PS
Love Bujold! Only read the first two Chalion books though... I've heard the last isn't as good, any opinions?

Yefim (fgalkin) | 70 comments This Swastika Night by Katharine Burdekin

As a woman is above a worm,
So is a man above a woman.
As a woman is above a worm,
So is a worm above a Christian.
So, my comrades, the lowest thing,
The meanest, filthiest thing
That crawls on the face of the earth
Is a Christian woman.
To touch her is the uttermost defilement
For a German man.
To speak to her only is a shame.
They are all outcast, the man, the woman and the child.
My sons, forget it not!
On pain of death or torture
Or being cut off from the blood. Heil Hitler.
As a man is above a woman,
So is a Nazi above any foreign Hitlerian.
As a Nazi is above a foreign Hitlerian,
So is a Knight above a Nazi.
As a Knight is above a Nazi,
So is Der Fuehrer (whom may Hitler bless)
Above all Knights,
Even above the Inner Ring of Ten.
And as Der Fuehrer is above all Knights,
So is God, our Lord Hitler, above Der Fuehrer.
But of God the Thunderer and our Lord Hitler
Neither is pre-eminent,
Neither commands,
Neither obeys.
They are equal in this holy mystery.
They are God.
Heil Hitler.

message 4050: by Tim (new)

Tim (timoerl) I've put The Colour of Magic on hold, for now. Then I saw that I had more than 9 books on my on-hold shelf, so I'm going to try and read those books first. So I'm now resuming The Bourne Identity.
