Robert MacAnthony (steerpike7) | 218 comments I didn't like The Handmaids Tale. The initial premise was not plausible and I found it dull.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments 1984 is...different than my ususal fair. I can't say I'm enjoying it...but I can say I'm reading it, lol.

C.M. Barrett (elfspirit) | 68 comments My next book will be Animal Farm. I ordered it from the library, and it also has 1984. I'm debating with myself about reading 1984. Scared me when I was a kid, and it's much less fictional now, so maybe not.

I've never read any Orwell so this is a new one for me. Not sure how I managed to get out of this in school...

Umm, I remember... we read Heart of Darkness instead. The horror, the horror!

message 1705: by C.M. (new)

C.M. Barrett (elfspirit) | 68 comments Heart of Darkness, I remember that one, though not well. It's free for Kindle on Amazon, so when mine arrives (this week!), I will add it to the criminally huge list I have already prepared in anticipation. This is in addition to my already-gigantic TBR list. The nice thing about ebooks is that they don't physically topple.

message 1706: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments Right now I'm reading This Perfect Day for the reddit group and am about to start The Hobbit re-read for the #geekgirls group. I'm very slowly reading The Pickwick Papers for a Dickens project in yet another book where we are going to read all of his books as serialized and in their proper publication order. I am still working on Master of the Senate: The Years of Lyndon Johnson and The Christ-Haunted Landscape: Faith and Doubt in Southern Fiction, as far as non-fiction goes. Also, North of Boston and Shakespeare's Sonnets. Oh, and my boyfriend and I will probably start our re-read of ASoIaF in the next week or so. I may throw in a mystery as well, since I don't have any of those going right now. xD

Amelia (narknon) The Dread Pirate Grant wrote: "Well good :) maybe we can bring them out of the woodworks ;) I think I'll nominate her for the Epic Fantasy read next month"

I've read most of the Firekeeper series too. I think I may have missed the last one, but I'm not sure. That's one of those books that I think I own, but I didn't find when I did my thorough cataloguing of all my books.

Maybe you could help me in that regard Grant. This is what I remember last from the series, (mind you it's been a while now): (view spoiler)

I finished Memories of Ice a few days ago. I'm really enjoying the Malazan books so far. I have to take a break between books though, read something lighter that I can zip through, thus I finished Enchanted Ivy last night. Now I think I'm going to read The Amaranth Enchantment before I start Silverthorn. Then I might read another book before I start House of Chains.

message 1708: by Lina (new)

Lina (booksnotlovers) I'm actually reading Alice In Wonderland. I started it ages and ages ago, but never got around to finish it, so I'm making a second attempt.

message 1709: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments I need to read Alice, but will probably be a while before I do. Right now it just reminds me of my ex-husband.

Really? And you read/write horror...

...my wussydar is going off. Maybe I don't need to finish this one. I still remember the ending to The Girl in the Box and I read it in middle school or something.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I need to read Alice in Wonderland, too. I guess. I never got into Alice even as a kid.

message 1714: by Traci (new)

Traci Gardens of the Moon. Finally. Truth be told I was a little afraid of this book. I kept seeing it described as difficult and confusing. I was warned that it might take past the first book to "get it". Well, I just started about an hour ago and I'm loving it so far.

Game? He was mostly a fan of the book, but didn't care for the new movie. He was an artist too, so he had done more than one series of sketches based on an Alice project he wanted to do. They encompassed about 250 sketches total.

message 1716: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) American McGee's Alice its a dark platformer for the pc. It had some great visuals.

message 1717: by [deleted user] (new)

Amelia, the book you're referring to, Wolf's Blood, is the last book in the series so apparently you have read it at some point ;) Oh and her wolf was Blind Seer

message 1718: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments LOL @ MrsJoseph Have you read the end yet? It's not bad in gore or frightening, it just brought a new idea into my mind that I hadn't thought of before. And it frightened me.

(view spoiler)

I'm not sure why that disturbed me so much. I read it when I was in my teens, and I still believed that what was mine was mine, or something like that.

That's one reason why I write horror actually, because silly things can disturb and frighten me.

No, I'm procrastinating. I skipped the spoiler for now :-)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I'm reading The Redemption of Althalus. I just realized that Eddings has a fetish for teeny tiny women. Ok, I give you that Ce'Nedra was a dryad. So what's the excuse for Andine? Is there any real reason that he keeps hammering in that she is "tiny." Not short, tiny.

=D I'm really liking so far. A nice mix of ASoIaF and The First Law trilogy with a whole lot of fantasy thrown in. Already bought the second book today.

Now, I'm continuing The Circle Trilogy: The Complete Trilogy in One Epic Edition. I'm onto the second book in the series: Red.

Listen to the wussydar. Twisted is actually a subdued word for describing the ending. I would say there are horror stories that could never happen and horror stories that could. 1984 falls in Column B.

message 1729: by C.M. (new)

C.M. Barrett (elfspirit) | 68 comments I finished Wolf's Blood and was more satisfied than I thought I would be. I still wish the series would continue, though. The animal and semi-animal characters are great.

That just SUCKS. Wow, it sucks a lot. I'm not too sure of this now...

message 1732: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments The end of 1984 is horrifying, for sure. But I'm not sure if it's the type of horrifying that would freak MrsJoseph out. Somehow, I don't think so. I could be wrong, though.

message 1733: by [deleted user] (new)

Naw...she'll be fine with the ending. Its the kind of scary that makes you want to overthrow the government not the kind that makes you check under the bed :)

This is a very astute definition. But it might also make you want to check your phone for listening devices.

Mrs. Joseph, if you persist to the end, please give us your opinion. If we don't hear from you, I'm going to be worried. :)

message 1736: by [deleted user] (new)

As long as it doesn't turn into a Saw movie all of a sudden, she should be fine.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) I just started reading Shadows of a Dark Queen by Raymond E. Feist. This is where I stopped after all his bantam book when he switched publishers. I hope to read the four book in this part, then the next trilogy as well. The book so far even though I can predict the plot, he writes it so well that it almost fun to read.

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments The Dread Pirate Grant wrote: "Eh I'm on all the government watch lists already ;)"

...This doesn't surprise me. LOL

But hey, I've heard that if you simply look up questionable things, i.e. how to make a bomb, on the Internet, then you're put on a watch list.

Since I like to write short stories and whatnot, I often research subjects like this. So, if there is a watch list like that, I'm on it too.

Like the Dread Pirate Grant, I am also on the watch lists. I would be disappointed in myself if I weren't.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments LOL!

I'm not sure if I'm only any watch lists - but I did a stint as an intern with the fed gov once...they keep all your records for 110 years or death + 110 years...so I'm all covered for the gov watch list. If I'm not mistaken they keep those records up to date, too...but I could be mistaken. 1984 is making me a little paranoid. :~

@C - I will let you know. It's a slow read for me. I'm only on page 90. I don;t know how much more of this grey and dismal experience I can take. It's almost like torture to a person who is used to reading colorful fantasies and romances.

I really understand. Last night I read Animal Farm, and I was deeply depressed. No wonder Orwell had a short life. You wouldn't want to live inside that head—not to discount his brilliance, dark as it was.

I know about the lists. My grandmother, who made a relatively innocent remark to an FBI agent (long story) got a visit from them 40 years later. They were just checking in.

message 1744: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I was going to "spring clean" this month - get caught up on series that I've fallen behind on, read the WWW trilogy before Robert Sawyer's signing later this month, finally get to Good Omens... I just don't wanna!

I'm going to go sit in front of my bookshelves and find something I'm interested in.

Why can't it be July 26th!?!

message 1745: by Maggie (new)

The Warded Man is great, Maggie...I actually enjoyed the Desert Spear even more than I did the Warded Man :) Pick it up soon and let me know what you think!
