message 2: by Lyn M (new) 2 hours, 46 min ago

I'm not sure if these were before Post 850 or not, but I only have two GR authors to report so far:

Task 10.4 - Dragon's Keep by Janet Lee Carey

Task 15.9 - Rush Home Road: A Novel by Lori Lansens

I am correct that we have to complete the task before claiming any GR authors, right? I have two others, but although I finished the books, I am not finished with the tasks yet.

For Task 10.6 (Stand up for your rights) I read Friday Night Bites by Chloe Neill. Cynthia expressly allowed discrimination against vampires and supernatural beings in the Task Help thread, though I feel guilty about using them, lol. Jayme Pendergraft | 762 comments Hi, I'm Jayme VA and here are some new completed tasks. This should get me up to 195 points. Thanks for all your hard work!

5.9: Get Caught Reading- Reading in Public: Love Story by Erich Segal. I read this after work at Barnes and Noble.

20.2: Written or takes place before 1450 AD. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight takes place in the 1300's.

25.5: A: Favorite Genre/Type: Contemporary Fiction:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Laarson. claiming ticket for big Books 500+ the version I read was 644 pages.

I really enjoyed this book and was very disappointed when I had to put it down. The story moves along very quickly and I really enjoyed watching it unfold. It was a little darker than I expected at the end. I like this genre because there is always something new and refreshing about contemporary lit! You never know what you'll find.

B: 2nd Favorite Genre: Horror/Suspense: Your Heart Belongs to Me by Dean Koontz.

This was a horrible book. Do not read it. The worst of his books I've ever read. The (nonexistent) plot is horrible, the characters are horrible, everything about it is horrible. I like this genre because it is usually more exciting and keeps you on your toes- not the case with this book!

Task 25.5 Helen's task
Read 2 books
A. Favorite Genre - murder mystery
read Killer Heat by Linda Fairstein. This was classic murder mystery Alexandra Cooper series. Alexandra Cooper is the assistant DA in NY chasing a brutal serial killer.

B. Second favorite Genre - suspense/thriller
listed to Deep Shadow by Randy Wayne White. This book involved three individuals searching for a sunken airplane full of cuban gold. Unfortunately, a cave in occurs during the dive and when Doc Ford makes it to the surface, he discovers two criminals ready to kill him and his friends if they don't recover and give them the gold. Interesting book, a bit long in places.

Task 25.5 also requires "and an explanation of why you like that genre/type."

I love murder mysterys and suspense /thriller books for the same reason - I enjoy trying to figure out "who done it" or what is going to happen before it is revealed in the book. I also find that both genres keep me sitting on the edge of my chair and unable to put a good book down until I finish. I have been reading mystery books since elementary with Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew and added suspense/thriller as I reached junior high. I do love these tasks though because they are expanding my horizons.

Restoring Harmony by Joelle Anthony (320 pages): Review on “Bookworming in the 21st Century” http://www.bookworminginthe21stcentur...
Review: Restoring Harmony is one of the most realistic dystopias I have ever read. The explanation of current affairs is highly plausible and even likely. Anthony spends the prefect amount of time explaining the current situation of world affairs and how that came to be; there isn’t pages and pages of explanation or highly unlikely scenarios. Her characters are interesting and just as believable as the overall plotline. Restoring Harmony is a wonderfully written dystopia.

Repost from 2176/2339

I love historical fiction because it puts into a real context all that we learn and discuss in school and even non-fiction and today's news. My morning coffee is the perfect example, how did it get here and why? That is the story David Liss tells in The Coffee Trader.

I also am a huge fan of the cozy mystery. Not a fan of the slasher type and serial murder mysteries or vampires and blood really have no interest for me but common sense and power of deduction is important to me. That is what I see, normal people, in the cozy mysteries. I prefer to read something not so grim. Yes, the stories can be contrived (look how many were killed in Cabot Cove and Jessica always was able to solve the story on TV), but the characters have more in their lives than just solving a murder. They see the little details and changes in suspects, because they usually know them. The description of people and places I find more detailed and thus more interesting.

I read You Slay Me by Katie MacAlister. She is a Goodreads Author.

If you are a fan of paranormal lite you will like this book. It is a very amusing, light take on "Otherworldly Beings". Aisling, the main character, finds herself in Paris, thinking she is there to do one job, a normal one, and finds out she is actually involved in a paranormal adventure. There is a bit of romance, a lot of humor and a mystery to solve as well. A must-read for anyone who enjoys this type of book.

I read about it on Smart Bitches Trashy Books
This is the second book with Lord Lisle and Olivia Carsington; in the first Lord Perfect we learn of their meeting as children and of the romance between her mother and his uncle. Now they are grown up, he is back in England, and they are off on another adventure, this time to Scotland to oversee renovations of one of his family's properties. He detests Scotland, rain, responsibility, and bagpipes. She wants adventure, freedom, and Lisle. They were made for each other.
(One off-putting note: he is stroking "her velvet legs"--do unshaved legs feel like velvet? When did women start shaving their legs? 1831?) Anyway, it was a fun book. Smart Bitches gave it an A, I give it 4*

A. Favorite Genre - Historical Fiction

My Rating: ★★★★

I've always loved historical fiction. I like how I can be transported back in time and feel history come alive.

"The Postmistress" took me back to WWII England and the U.S. I liked the strong women characters, and how Blake wove several story threads together. I especially enjoyed Frankie's radio coverage of the war. It was a wonderful tale.

B. Second Favorite Genre - Mystery/Thriller/Suspense
*Hold Tight by Harlan Coben - READ 8.10.10
My Rating: ★★★★★

Nothing gets my heart racing and the pages turning faster than a good mystery/thriller. I love getting caught up in the suspense. I also like a book that scares me and makes me want to look over my shoulder.

Harlan Coben is a master at writing a great thriller. "Hold Tight" scared the bejeebers out of me, because it was so realistic. Imagine spying on your own child for his protection and finding secrets you don't really want to know. This was a fast paced, grab you by your throat story!

For this task I was thinking about my younger sister. She is 16 (6 years younger than me) and I can't believe how much of an individual she is and how much I wish that I could be as confident as she is. Jeni | 41 comments 15.4 Learn Your Numbers
A) Mansfield Park by Jane Austen
B) Walden by Henry David Thoreau

My number is 11. I picked Walden as my B book because the explanation for my number is intuitive, illumination, idealist, a dreamer. This describes Henry Thoreau as he sets out to live in nature and depend upon the land in this book.

Sara E here...a Few more tasks done...

5.4 I read a book from the Sakura Medal list (this is an award given by Japanese International school students.) I chose Newes from the Dead by Mary Hooper. This book was pretty excellent. It is a historical fiction book set in the 1650's and is based on the true story of Anne Green, a scullery maid who is falsely accused and charged with infanticide after given birth to a stillborn child, and hung, declared dead, only to revive on the dissection table. An incredibly interesting story, including a copy of the actual pamphlet printed for profit after her ordeal.

25.1 - For the military portion of the challenge, I read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls by Steven Hockensmith. This book is the prequel to P&P&Zombies, and features one of my favorite characters ever, Captain Cannon, a limbless commander of the military who has soldiers assigned to perform the functions of his missing appendages. (Left Limb, Right Arm, etc.) He is also Mrs. Bennett's former paramour, which is esp. hilarious. He will make you LOL when he barks out orders like "Limb, embrace the lady!"

For the color portion, I read the white cover of Philip Pullman's book The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ by Philip Pullman The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ, which came in both black and white. It was OK.

25.3 - I read The Season by Sarah Maclean, a Regency romance/mystery set in England, a place that I am so obsessed with visiting. My husband also. I don't think we will be able to afford it this year, but hopefully next year for our anniversary.

For the language portion of the challenge, I read The Gospel According to Jesus Christ by Jose Saramago, which was originally written in Portuguese and translated into English. A hard read, but it was very interesting and I enjoyed it.

15.4 - Learn Your Numbers
My number is 3 and Katie MacAlister also has that same number so I read Zen and the Art of Vampires. Katie MacAlister is a Goodreads author also. The characteristics for my number are joy of living, the arts, socialization, and expression. I read Bit the Jackpot by Erin McCarthy, the main female character is working in a strip club to pay her way through college. I think this line of work is definitely social and expressive.

15.5 - "The Great Authors Were Great Readers
For this task I picked Robert B Parker off of the list and read Night Passage. I picked The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett off of Parker's top 10 list.

30.4 - Cheryl TX's Task - The Science Of Crime
I read The Bone Collector by Jeffery Deaver for the male author and The Remains of the Dead by Wendy Roberts for the female author.

20.4 Shelley's Task - Anniversary Gift
The Mango Season by Amulya Malladi

This is my fourth challenge (Fruit/Flowers or Appliances) so I would give a fancy fruit basket with mangoes in it! Loved this book :)

20.6 Nicole CA's Task - List Maker
The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent

I really did think this was going to be a must read - I've heard good things about it and was prepared for a harrowing but excellent story. Sadly, for me, it just didn't get there. It is a harrowing story but the writing just seemed to get bogged down and I spent a lot of the book wondering when I was going to get involved with the characters. I had no real feeling for any of them. Not a must read in my opinion.
