The song Son of a Son of a Sailor by Jimmy Buffett is my favorite summer song. Not only does it reminds me of summer, but also my grandfather. I spent much of summer at my grandparent's beach house and on the boat with my granddad when I was a kid. So, for this task, I read Tales from Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett.

Janice | 714 comments 25.5 Favorite Genres:

1. Work Memoirs - People, who write about their vocations, usually love what they do. Their passion, dedication, observations, and expertise almost always provide for an amazing, unique story written from the heart.

The Midwife: A Memoir of Birth, Joy, and Hard Times by Jennifer Worth
(5 stars)

This book represents why I love this genre. I have a new favorite book. Ms. Worth, at the age of 22, became a midwife in London before telephones, obstetricians, and maternity wards were widely available. She was almost completely on her own delivering babies in homes. The book was both raw and charming. The author gives equal time to keen observations of the human condition, England's 1950s
postwar atmosphere, and the history of her profession. Riveting.

2. History - I love to learn about history, especially the obscure people, events, and synchronicities which had huge impacts and have been almost forgotten.

Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell (4 stars)

Ms. Vowell travels to the sites associated with the murders of Presidents Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley. She writes of the backgrounds and motives of each assassin and how these events were realized through some crazy "coincidences". For example, I learned that John Wilkes Booth's brother once saved Lincoln's son when he fell on train tracks. Lincoln's son was later present at all three assassinations. Fascinating.

20.10 ABC Murders by Agatha Christie (Finished 6/19)

25.10 The Blue Notebook by James Levine (Finished 6/25) and The Price of Privilege by Madeline Levine (Reading Now)

Total Pts: 75/900
Books Read: 12/71
Tasks Completed: 7/53

I need to start finishing some of these two part tasks instead of continuing to start more! The problem is I like to let my books choose me, rather than forcing myself to read a book just for the sake of it. There's still a lot of summer left though, I'm sure I'll get around to completing them eventually!

message 1279: by Gina (new)

Gina Gallo (mayqueen79) 5.1 Heat Wave: Hot Six (Stephanie Plum, #6) by Janet Evanovich
5.9 Get Caught Reading: Fearless Fourteen (Stephanie Plum, #14) by Janet Evanovich (I was at Wal-Mart waiting on a friend.)

10.4 Roll the Dice: Finger Lickin' Fifteen (Stephanie Plum, #15) by Janet Evanovich (3 3 4: 324-344 and this book was 342 pages)

15.9 "He Who Knows Others Is Wise, He Who Knows Himself Is Enlightened.": A. Bad Luck and Trouble (Jack Reacher Series, #11) by Lee Child This books describes myself in 4 words. Sigh. B. Reacher is nothing like me. He is much more pragmatic, much less devoted to things and much more violent. However, the older I get the more pragmatic I am, the less caring I get about things and the more violence I must suppress. So, I guess I am moving toward being more like him.

20.6 Supporting Goodreads Authors: The Remarkable Miss Frankenstein by Minda Webber I consider this to be a must-read book, because any literary people will enjoy the name-dropping. It's a funny romance that takes characters you've known all your life and tilts them a little to be more and yet, less, normal. The sequel is also compelling: The Reluctant Miss Van Helsing by Minda Webber

25.5 Share the Summer Love:
(A) Bullet (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #19) by Laurell K. Hamilton I love fantasy. It opens up my imagination and takes me out of my life a bit. It is the ultimate escape and gives me some emotional freedom. Bullet was good, but made me feel like a cad. There was a moment in it that even the author said was sad and upset her greatly. I looked at it and thought, "Hmmm, she did what she had to do. No biggie." Have I really grown that harsh?
(B) Love Overboard by Janet Evanovich I also love romance. While fantasy takes me to different worlds, romance opens up my heart and reminds me why I fell in love in the first place. It also reminds me to be sweeter and more loving. Sometimes, I need those reminders. Love Overboard was a cute read. The woman had to cook for a ton of people, and I had to admire that. They would have thrown me overboard.

80/900
I am slacking this summer.

I read The Death of Vishnu by Manil Suri
And one change I would like to see in my world is for people to pay attention when they're driving. As a result, I don't use my phone while I drive and I don't drive after drinking.

Nicole | 1295 comments I have been away, so I have numerous tasks to claim!

5.9 I read Dead and Gone while in the airport, on the plane to NYC, on the bus and on the subway. I even had to stop at a bench in the park to finish reading it all in public! I loved loved loved this Sookie book!

5.10 I re-read High Fidelity which is one of my favorite books ever. I also got my mom to read it while I was visiting her!

15.8 I read Magic Hour by Kristen Hannah (loved it WAY more than the first book I read by her and was glad I gave her another shot) and Magic Hour by Susan Isaacs.

30.5 The dish I am bringing is a WW recipe for potato salad. It has green onions and turkey bacon in it. I think that makes it very special. That and that it is more vinegary than it is mayonnaisey which I really prefer!!! I will post the recipe to the recipe thread when I return home. For this task, I read:
A. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society- utterly charming!
C. Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table- I LOVE Ruth Reichl! I passed this one along to my mom as well!

I love that the sequel to this book is a J.D. Robb book. I'm just waiting for it to get here from a Paperback Swapper.

I'm a huge JD Robb fan and I never knew that -- cool! Which one is it?

I can answer that Ashley. It is titled "Big Jack" by JD Robb and coauthored by Nora Roberts. I think that is such a hoot. A bit of a split personality thing happening here!

I'm also a big fan of the JD Robb books and will have to check out these 2 books. Hot Rocks was originally published under the title Remember When in 2003. That is really confusing when a publisher reisuues a book under a new title and cover.

For this task I read The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud by Ben Sherwood. I was not terribly impressed, but I think it will make a good movie if they keep everything under wraps until the end.

For this task I read The Stormchasers by Jenna Blum (Goodreads Author). 5*'s
I won this from one of the giveaways here on Goodreads so was excited to see this task.
The book is about twins, one of which is bi-polar and how it effects them and their families lives. Karena goes looking for her brother Charles who she has not seen in twenty years. In order to find him she joins a group who are professional stormchasers. The writing is so good that I found myself feeling like I was in the car while they are chasing the storms. The story is good, the people real and believable. You feel sorry for Karena as well as wonder what the heck she is doing and I liked her even at her worst.

Thanks, Sheila! "Remember When" sounds really familiar. I will have to do some investigation!!
ETA: Ok, I have read both of these. They were BOTH in "Remember When"!! That's too funny that she re-released these as two separate books. Guess it is twice as much money, eh? LOL.

Jennifer Hodges Young | 306 comments 25.5 - Helen's Task - Share the Summer Love

A) Potshot by Robert Parker Detective story
B) A Face in the Window by Sarah Graves Cozy Mystery

In Potshot Spenser has to go to Potshot, AZ to help a town break free from a band of marauders. In this book we get a visit from some old friends and it is amusing as Spenser flys around the country asking for their help. I love Spenser and have done since I was young and only thought it was a TV show I am about done with all of the books and am sad that there will be no more.

In A Face at the Window Jake has to send in her letter as to why the man who killed her mother should go to jail. As soon as that is done bad things start to happen. One of the reasons I like cozy mysteries is the side characters which add flavor to the story. In this story Jake is on her own and the story suffers for it in my opinion but it is still a good book. Cozies are a fun easy read and some days that I just want to snuggle in bed and read a cozy!

Twice as much money for the two "separate writers". Half for each personality. haha
