We all know the big names in book awards (Pulitzer, Man Booker, Hugo, Newbery etc.) but there are a lot of lesser known book awards out there and lucky for us Goodreads has a list of them. Go to this link (Awards) and: Read a book found on the list of winners and nominees for an award you had previously never heard of. (From the foreign language awards you may read a translation if it is available).
The Weight of Silence by Heather Gudenkauf-6/28
Goodreads Nominee for 2009

5.10 - "If One Cannot Enjoy Reading A Book Over And Over Again, There Is No Use In Reading It At All." - Oscar Wilde
This summer let's test Mr. Wilde's statement by taking the time to...Re-read a book that you loved reading the first time.
Dear John by Nicholas Sparks-6/25
Read this back in 2006 and watched the movie yesterday! Still one of my favorites :)
New Total: 40 points

15.2A State name in title
California Characters: An Array of Amazing People by Charles Hillinger
15.2B Set in original state = New Jersey
Fearless Fourteen by Janet Evanovich
(I originally slated The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri for this task -- set in Massachusetts, I thought. It's a really good book but parts take place in Connecticut, New Hampshire and New York as well as a couple of flash backs to India.)

20.4 This is my eighth challenge, so I had to read a gift related to lace. I read The Lace Reader
10.1 (hurricane names) I read The Spellmans Strike Again

I finished another task!
30.2 - PJ Read's Task - As Suggested By Shannon South Africa - For The Children
A.Read a children’s classic book (EXAMPLE: Peter Pan) AND either pass it on, or recommend it to a child (give details when you claim your points).
I read: A Traveller in Time by Alison Uttley (Paperback, 286 pages) (4 stars) and I recommended it to my youngest daughter, as a change from all those vampire romances that she likes. “We’ll see” she said. OK then, whatever.
and
B. Read any book where a child is the main character
I read: The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (2009) by Alan Bradley (Hardcover, 374 pages) The heroine is an 11-year-old girl. Inventive. I’ve put the next one in the series on my TBR. (4 Stars)
Both books must be at least 100 pages. Both books are.

30.4 - Neighborhood Watch by Cammie McGovern - in which forensics is used to clear the protagonist's name and The Bride Collector by Ted Dekker - a great thriller with lots of twists, using both forensics and set partly in a mental health center.
25.8 - The Book of Lost Things and Weetzie Bat which together make up 452 pages. Weetzie bat was a reread for me but a good one. The Book of Lost Things had a terrific ending but didn't keep me particularly interested throughout the middle. Parts of it were excellent though.

15.3 Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen by Julie Powell (6/18/10)
Blog: http://juliepowell.blogspot.com/
3 Stars
The story was ok. It's an interesting idea and interesting to read Julie's thoughts and revelations through each recipe. I actually liked Julia Child in the movie better. Her story was more developed than it was in the book and it was easier to see the connections.

15.7 "...Be The Change...": Kim by Rudyard Kipling
I would like to see the U.S. become less dependent on carbon-based, non-renewable forms of energy. I don't own a car & take public transportation or walk everywhere I need to go. I conserve energy at home by buying energy efficient appliances, only using compact fluorescent lights and using the AC sparingly. When I can, I donate money to renewable energy advocate groups & am an email activist for conservation/renewable energy.

The Rock Orchard: A Novel by Paula Wall
Total points = 110

My favorite genre has been urban fantasy for several years running--ever since I picked up the Dresden Files, actually. Magic Bites was very enjoyable; it's a series I plan to continue. It was a dark, dystopian noir and was right up my alley.
For my second favorite genre, I struggled between romance and historical fiction. And then ultimately went with romance because I've been reading more of that than anything else since my daughter was born. Yeah, I have mom brain. Unfortunately, I thought the book I chose sucked. I gave it one star.
20.6 - Just Above a Whisper - 304 pages - I would not recommend this book be on a must-read list. It was trite and sappy and the head-hopping writing style drove me batty. This book is the second in a trilogy; somebody gave me all three so I'm committed to finish, but would otherwise have to say that this just isn't worth it.

25.2 Coralie's Task - Q & A
The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson
Aunt Dimity Slays the Dragon by Nancy Atherton
The Aunt Dimity was good - I liked the Ren fair theme but I am getting a bit tired of Lori. I'm sure she wasn't as irritating in the earlier books.
The second Millennium book was great - I gave it 5 stars even though it was 4 and a half to me (I'm very stingy with my 5 stars). But it deserved more than just 4.
One big book ticket please for The Girl Who Played with Fire.

I'm a 6, so I read Angel's Peak by Robyn Carr. A 6 is supposed to be responsible, protecting, nurturing, involved in community, balanced, and sympathtic, so I read The Next Accident by Lisa Gardner, where the main character is an FBI agent protecting his family. I would say he is also responsible, involved in the community and balanced as part of his job.

For 25.5: My two favorite genres are Post-Apocolyptic and Legal Fiction.
For the first, I read One Second After by William R. Forstchen. In this book, a small Carolina town deals with the first year following an EMP. It was interesting, and really really scary (in a: my goodness, this could so easily happen! kind of way). The author clearly had political reasons for writing this book (and the "hero" is so obviously the writer that it is a bit painful), but overall I thought it was interesting and a good read.
For the second, I read by John Jay Osborn, Jr. I somehow missed reading this when I went to law school. It was an interesting story about a man in his first year at Harvard Law. It actually seems pretty accurate, based on people I know who went to Harvard in the early '90s. My law school was populated with more people who actually loved law, so it wasn't as bleak! It was a good story, but not as good as One L: The Turbulent True Story of a First Year at Harvard Law School.
Task 25.8: I read two books, both based on Cinderalla: The Cinderella Deal by Jennifer Crusie and Stroke of Midnight by Julie Kistler (this is only in e-book format, so I don't have a page #, but the first book is 288, so I figure they have to total 400!)
**Jennifer Crusie is a Goodreads author**
For Task 30.4, I read Innocent by Scott Turow. I won this as a Goodreads give-away and it reminded me why I love this genre: his books are so well-plotted, and full of interesting characters. I loved it! Lots of good forensic details.
My female author was Elizabeth George and I read This Body of Death. Loved this one also! Her Lynley books are fabulous. Again, lots of crime detail and forensics, but both authors do a good job of make it interesting and not over-whelming. This book was almost 700 pages, so I'd like to claim my Big Book Ticket!!
This brings me to 150 points.

I really enjoyed this comfortable mystery with warm, delightful characters. I'm looking forward to continuing with the series as more books are published.
I would like Nature to be actively thought about more often and to stop littering in streets, forests, beaches, etc. I have volunteered in the Adopt A Highway program, where volunteers clean up litter along the highway. I'll continue to help out with this and other community programs as I can.
