Tanya | 44 comments I drag The Plains of Passage (Earth's Children, #4) by Jean M. Auel The Plains of Passage back and forth to work every day, but I haven't even cracked in open in at least a week. :(
Instead I'm reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho The Alchemist which is pretty good so far (I'm 80 pages into it).

In my car I'm listening to Home A Memoir of My Early Years by Julie Andrews Edwards Home: A Memoir of My Early Years (nearly done - I'm about 1/2 way through the 10th of 11 discs) - will finish it up tomorrow, if not on the way home tonight.

My home pc book is Escape by Carolyn Jessop Escape, and though I'm hating every minute of it, it's like a train wreck and I just can't stop. :(

message 115: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (thebookishdame) | 26 comments The Girl Who Stopped Swimming Finished last night. I just love the way Joshilyn Jackson writes. This is another great book by her...she also wrote, "Backseat Saints." The story of a neighborhood teenager who dies in her best friend's pool, and the friend's mom who can't rest until she solves the mystery of her death, this book is real and alive. Joshilyn uses her keen understanding of things mystical, psychic and homegrown. She makes a connection between the oddities of backwoods interbreeding families, and their "knowing" things. Relationships are always a strong point for Joshilyn. Once you pick up one of her novels...you're taken in.

Deborah (thebookishdame) | 26 comments Nearly finished with "Outer Dark," by Carmac McCarthy.Outer Dark What a twisted tale this one is! I couldn't stop reading last night into the early hours of this morning. Not a long book...but my eyes wouldn't cooperate for the last 20 pages. It's a haunting and horrifying story with a glimpse of a culture that is both odd and reminescent of something deep in our psyches. I love this story as only Carmac McCarthy can tell it. Haunting! Outer Dark by Cormac McCarthy

message 119: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) Debi, I loved it. I gave it 4 stars only because I very rarly give 5. I've heard better reviews for Stop Me, but IMO Trust Me is better. I have about 125 left for Stop Me.

message 122: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) Rosabelle, I read Pandora's Daughter and really enjoyed it. I hope you enjoy it as well.

message 123: by Rosabelle (new)

Rosabelle Purnama Thanks Lisa, I enjoyed reading it so far.. can't wait to finish the book to find out what happens at the end.. I had low expectation of this book, but it has so far exceeded my expectation.

Deborah (thebookishdame) | 26 comments Nevada Barr I've just listened to her book "13 1/2," and what an awesome one it is! I understand from her regular readers that it's not her ordinary genre fare. With references to actual, horrific murders in America, Barr gives us a gory and fascinating tale of a likeable psychotic axe-murderer, and a poor young woman who comes across his life's path.
Read this one at night and you'll want to pull your curtains!

message 126: by Rosabelle (new)

Rosabelle Purnama Hi Debi.. I just finished reading Pandora's Daughter and I enjoyed it.. better than I would have had.. I read 2 of Iris Johansen's books before this one and didn't really like it, so Ithought this one would be the same.. but it's definitely better.. :)

message 127: by Rosabelle (new)

Rosabelle Purnama I'm currently reading I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak.. heard so many good reviews about this book.

message 128: by Tanya (last edited Sep 20, 2010 12:55AM) (new)

Tanya | 44 comments Ohmigosh! So much for finishing 2 books this weekend. I got to the "end" of Escape by Carolyn Jessop Escape and discovered that my copy was missing at least one disc!! Even though I've not been enjoying this book, I can't just let it go! I have to finish it! But I ABSOLUTELY refuse to buy a copy (I dislike it that much), so I have to find another way to finish it. Oh so irritating!!!

message 129: by Rosabelle (new)

Rosabelle Purnama I just finished reading I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak. It is one of the best books that I've read this year. I gave it a 5 stars. Currently I'm reading Smoke and Mirrors by Tanya Huff, the second book in the Tony Foster series.. I think this one is better than the first one so far..

Deborah (thebookishdame) | 26 comments I'm listening to
Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin tonight. It's great and the narrator is quite good. She really adds to the experience.
This is an exception to the trailing stories after classic literature rule I've been reading, I think. Some of them have been really tiresome!

message 133: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) Debi, I hope you like Thicker Than Water. I finished it the other day and I loved it. I gave it 4 stars.

Debi (debjm51) | 445 comments Lisa, With my dental work and all that good stuff that came with it and now finally getting over one of my headaches I have had for two days. I am hoping to finish Death Blows by tomorrow and then finish reading Thicker Than Water. I have read the first chapter so far and enjoying it..smiles. Oh and I downloaded some books for Audible today.. ;D!!!

message 135: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I also own Death Blows but haven't started it yet.

message 136: by Debi (last edited Sep 25, 2010 11:26AM) (new)

Debi (debjm51) | 445 comments Lisa, I am enjoying it but not as much as the first one. The subject of the crimes in this one isn't really grabbing me but I am trying to read it with a open mind considering it is another world/dimension and it gives you more depth into some of the characters..LOL!! 3rd one coming out I think it is in Dec. and I will be picking it up..smiles. Okay I am off for now..smiles.

message 137: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (thebookishdame) | 26 comments I just started The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson A Novel by Jerome Charyn I read a comprehensive biography or two of Ms Dickinson a couple of years ago, so I can see how this author gleans alot of truth to mix with his imagination in the novel. It's really a good book!

message 138: by Debi (new)

Debi (debjm51) | 445 comments I finally finished Death Blows (The Bloodhound Files, #2) by D.D. Barant !!!
It was good..but I loved the first one better. 3 stars. I will be reading the 3rd in the series when it is released. As for today I am not going to start another book today..I have some stuff to deal with today..smiles.

message 139: by Rosabelle (new)

Rosabelle Purnama I'm currently reading The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.. This book actually slows down my reading... Day 3 of reading this book and still couldn't finish it, only halfway through, although it's only 214 pages.. *sigh*

message 140: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (thebookishdame) | 26 comments Rosabelle, stick with it! Just because it's a classic of American literature, we all need to read it. As a coming of age book, it's basic literature taught in schools. You'll be glad you finished it because it should get better as you go along. But, I do recall it's not that easy to understand!! Warped mind of a teenaged boy and all!! LOL

message 141: by Debi (new)

Debi (debjm51) | 445 comments I have started Thicker Than Water (Mordecai Young, #1) by Maggie Shayne .

message 143: by Rosabelle (new)

Rosabelle Purnama I'm currently reading The Enemy by Lee Child. My first book by this author.. only several pages in, but it looks like i will enjoy it.. :)

message 144: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (thebookishdame) | 26 comments I'm still finishing up The Wrong Mother: A Novel "The Wrong Mother," by Sophie Hannah. I love this book for its different slant on a murder/suicide mystery. Top-notch writing...a sociological discussion on familiacide...a woman with a dopleganger. One of the most unusual books I've read this season.

Kristen (ru44) Debi wrote: "I have started Thicker Than Water (Mordecai Young, #1) by Maggie Shayne."

I just received this one yesterday from PBS - I'm so excited about reading it, but I have to finish The Reef - I should be done in a day or two.

Deborah (thebookishdame) | 26 comments Hi, Everyone! I know some of you from other discussions/groups and it's great to see you here!
I'm reading a few different things. What I'm loving and finishing tonight is "The Wrong Mother," by Sophie Hannah The Wrong Mother A Novel by Sophie Hannah It's interesting in terms of its slant toward the sociological study of familiacide...and women killing their children (and sometimes themselves along with them). In light of the recent number of women who have been doing this in the USA alone, I think the murder mystery storyline in Hannah's book is fascinating. I highly recommend this to all of you for a good read.

message 147: by Cammie (new)

Deborah (thebookishdame) | 26 comments I just finished The Second Virgin Birth which was a fantastic premise and storyline. There's a sequel coming out in the coming year, too, which I'm anxious to read!

And, I'm nearly finished with Snakewoman of Little Egypt. "Snakewoman.." is one of the most unique books I've read this year. I highly recommend it. It's intelligent, witty, interesting and has a poignant love story that's different most we've read. I just love this book and don't want it to end!
