Maggie-I found the first few Jim Butcher books to be so-so, but that his writing style and story continued to improve with each book. While I would never buy the first few, I own #6 and subsequent. Simon Green's Nightside stories are very different; I would almost call them pulp urban fiction fantasy. Sort of 'dark' except the story and characters are so exaggerated as to be almost parody. A great deal of stylistic bloodiness with some of the events, sometimes science-fiction like in shifting through time and events. I find Dresden to be a very straightforward narrative, a great deal like a traditional detective story, only with the fantastic elements like vampires, fairy, and temple dogs. Just my thoughts--if you keep reading, Dresden gets better. Green is interesting, and very different.

I'm reading
recommended by someone on Goodreads--I can't remember which thread anymore! I'm enjoying it, and will likely stick with the series.

I like the character but I got tired of him being exhausted, almost dead but able to do one last big magic thing that would solve everything.
But I've started to listen to book 4 on audiobook read by James Marters and I have to say, I like it. I really like it.
I just finished
which I really enjoyed and now I don't know if I want to read
or
I'm in the midst of a Patricia Briggs reading frenzy - rereading her older books and getting back up to speed on the Mercy serries.
Finished -
- better than I expected. Looking to see how the sequel plays out.
- This is a true fantasy with elves, goblins and humans. Again, I thought it was better than reviewed. Put the next book on hold at my library.Upcoming:
;
;
Sometimes it seems I start reading too many books at one time. The Pleasure Garden
The Vampire Kitty-Cat Chronicles Possession
Desire Unchainedin audiobook Tempting Evil
Skinwalker was great, looking for the next one. Read The Unnatural Inquirer by Simon R. Green; a blast as always. Started Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey and I need to slap myself for passing this book up before. I love it, it's like deep fried crack!
I'm finally reading something on my Kindle, Angelic. Not loving the novela, but I think the reading media is great.
Just Finished
, and was a bit disappointed, since I love Rydstrom in the previous book, so I was keen on seeing his story.. Too much time spent on his shaft.....Finished
, and OMG!!! Why did I wait to start reading this series?
I am currently reading:PALE DEMON by Kim Harrison (really good)
MATCHED by Allie Condie (not bad so far)
HUSH, HUSH by Becca Fitzpatrick (I'm slightly annoyed with the characters but I can't seem to stop reading it)
DAEMON'S MARK by Caitlin Kittredge (which I'm still reading, it's definitely not as good as previous books)
Finished
and loved it, but liked the first one a little bit better. Still a great read though.Working on
and
, but may put them to the side if I'm not done before the new BDB comes out.
I have finished Outlander Wicked Lovely The Girl Who Played with Fire Fire Me Up I am currently reading The Virgin's Lover and Lover Revealed
Reading
AND
!!These aren't even books for the Reading challenge that I have yet to begin but....Bones is delicious...
I almost finished reading Mixed Magics: Four Tales of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones. DWJ is now explaining some of the Chrestomanci universe. 'Stealer of Souls' was by far the best story in the book. A very bad enchanter wants to swallow the souls of past Chrestomancis and become all powerful. He kidnaps two boys to act as his apprentices. Big mistake. 'The Sage of Theare' is the 2nd best story. This story confused me some since it involved alternate deminsions, universes, and travel between them. The lesson of the story was 'Ask questions!'. 'Carol Oneir's Hundredth Dream' was short and sweet. She bottled dreams until her cast of characters rebelled. 'Warlock at the Wheel' was meh.
by Megg Jensen-Love it so far!
&
by Cate Tiernan...Then as soon as I get done with all the books I have to review...I am reading my HIGHLY anticipated City of Fallen Angels. If you haven't read The Mortal Intruments by Cassandra Clare...then I want to recommend! I also recommend Vampire Academy. Anyways, I have a blog and I am doing a giveaway for City of Fallen Angels if you want to check it out! www.magicalurbanfantasyreads.com

Right now I'm reading Jane Slayre. It's a hoot. I love it, haven't read the original classic but now more curious and hopeful about it. The twists are hilarious and the writing style is fine. Also really love the hero of the story.I'm reading a Barbara Michaels mystery as well but it's been put on the back burner as I keep forgetting to finish the end, as it's in my car.

It's possible that they only wanted to get a few readers to early review the book in order to get some buzz going on it, but didn't want to have to give it away to a lot of people if they know there's a larger market to be sold to. I've seen some of the more popular book series go up on NG for a day and then they're gone, whereas newer authors might have a book up for a couple of months.
Shelley wrote: "Wondering why netgalley no longer offers this up especially since it doesn't come out for months to come"I think Stacia is right. This one was only up for a day or so. I was surprised how quickly it was pulled.
The book was good though.
I guess I need to pay more attention, like daily, to the new releases. Then again, I have been busy reading through my library stash that finally came in.
Finished
and started
, which is a little outside the box for me (been reading a lot of PNr and UF with romance) so I'm excited for something different! Honestly, I think all the romance was starting to cloud my head...lol.
Reading
, which is kind of sucking my will to live. Finished
last night. It was okay, kind of wish she had stretched it out into three books.
Some great recs on here! Off to update the TBR juggernaut.

Ah no, it's not sucking my will to live because it's dark, it's because it's so bad. But I know what you mean about DF being a mood-changer, I'm in a reading slump from post-book melancholy and I can't shake it.

I like Meljean Brooks, but I do agree that Demon Angel is a tough one. There is so much world building in it that the book did read slow. The later ones aren't like that.

Did you stand by that sworn oath? I'm wondering if I should give her another go, just in case this was a first-book stumble, but am willing to be guided by other people with more exposure to her. I read the Iron Duke about a month ago and it was great. Demon Angel is going to be a DNF.
Currently reading

But then again Steampunk isn't a favorite genre of mine.
