In an effort to get back on track reading wise I have decided to read only the books I own and have yet to read in print or on my kindle and the only new books I am getting from the library will be audiobooks. I kept getting into a trap of having a tbr pile and then getting sidetracked by checking out new books from the library instead of reading the ones in my pile. I hope this helps my reading slump.

message 9355: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh Heidi, I do the same thing! I need to make myself read the books already on my Kindle. One of my problems is that I buy books before they even come out. ;)

Oh I don't have that added problem at least Shannen! Thanks. I feel better that I am not alone. :)

I wasn't sure I wanted to read it but is seems like it was getting decent reviews and my library had it on audio so I figured why not.

The most common thing I keep seeing is "Not as good as other Riordan books, but I liked it" or something to that respect.

For some reason all I've read are is Percy Jackson books. I loved them, but never went further down the Riordan Road.

Yup that's about right Tommy. I really liked it, it was a fun read, but just not his best. But still worth the read!

Brigid ✩ | 2471 comments Mod
Yeah that's basically it, Tommy. :P From what I've read, it's pretty similar to Percy Jackson but with Norse mythology instead of Greek. A lot of the plot/characters seem a little recycled from his previous books, honestly. That aside though, it's a fun read so far and it's made me laugh out loud a lot of times.

Percy Jackson is still his best, and I think everyone pretty much agrees on that. :D I think Heroes of Olympus is worth reading if you're a PJO fan; they're not quite as good, but they do have some of the same characters and there are some cool new characters as well.

I only read the first PJ book and it was a little too middle grade for me. Does the series mature as he ages??

message 9370: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 578 comments Thanks! I've read all his works so far and Percy is my fave! I'll give it a try :)

@Heidi - It does a bit. It maintains the same kind of humorous tone, but a lot of darker things start happening in it around book 3 or so. I did start reading them when I was 12 so I'm not sure if I'd feel differently if I'd started them as an adult––but I've re-read them multiple times and still loved them. :D

message 9372: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments It matures, but not at the rate that Say, Harry Potter does. It matures to maybe Goblet, Certainly not OotP(Not to say it doesn't get dark).

Thanks Tommy and Brigid. Everyone seems to love that series so I feel like I should too.

message 9374: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments I'd say it's worth looking into. It's a fun series, I'd only recommend reading if you feel like doing something fun and a bit silly at some point.

Well I read the first one and wasn't in love with the series so I think I might just leave it there. Thanks again though!

The PJ doesn't really mature as much as you want them to, unless you read the Heroes of Olympus series. Then that's when you see them actually grow up and become a little bit more serious.

I agree. Although I thought each book got better and better :) The stories and action got really good.

I kind of agree, although I'd say the 5th PJO book is pretty mature. And HOO feels like it's for slightly older readers––they're a lot longer, at least, haha. But also some of the characters have pretty dark backstories. I agree with Tommy that it doesn't get as mature as HP though. It's a bit more on the middle-grade side of YA.

message 9379: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Good point Bridget. I kind of think the later books are kind of like The False Prince. Older MG books, young YA

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments I finished Hollow City (Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children, #2) by Ransom Riggs this morning. Loved it. First book was better through the first 1/3 or so, but this one ended stronger IMO.

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I did finish Howl's Moving Castle. Good but still a little confusing at times. (I watched the movie a few years ago and found it confusing, too. The book did clear up some of it).

I'm reading a WWII book similar to The Diary of Anne Frank right now, though since it's written by the author for her children, I'm expecting a happier ending.

NaNoWriMo has been eating away at my reading time, so I'm still in the middle of:

The Mockingbirds (The Mockingbirds, #1) by Daisy Whitney The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, #1) by Rick Riordan

And yesterday I also started:

All American Boys by Jason Reynolds

Because it's already overdue at the library and I wanted to read it anyway. :P

I think my son will enjoy it. But besides being confusing at times, it's middle grade level. So another reason why you should be OK with not finishing it.

Kristina (kristinalawhead) Wanted a quick, light, easy read for T.giving so I picked Diamonds in the Rough (The Secret Diamond Sisters, #2) by Michelle Madow off my Nook. I liked the first but this one seems more juvenile, but sometimes that's a nice thing!

I haven't heard of this series but sometimes I like a good middle grade/juvenile read as long as it is well written :)

Love this trilogy, but yes its not unpredictable or anything. It is very enjoyable.

Finished:

All American Boys by Jason Reynolds The Mockingbirds (The Mockingbirds, #1) by Daisy Whitney

Really liked All American Boys. Didn't like The Mockingbirds much. Both were heavy ~issue~ books but the former does a much better job handling the subject material. :P

Now I'm going to focus on finishing:

The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, #1) by Rick Riordan
