Caedy Eries (karida) | 26 comments I absolutely loved The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness ...I also very much liked the Divergent Series.

Currently, I've started The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton after finishing Beautiful Darkness (Caster Chronicles, #2) by Kami Garcia

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments And see, I did love the Divergent serie. Loved it. All 3 books. I felt a kinship with Veronica Roth based on the anti-extremism messages among other things(don't want to hijack the thread haha). That being said, Chaos Walking is just in a whole other league.

Yeah I know I am in the minority with my feelings on Divergent. You can read my review if you want to see a long rant! Otherwise we all agree that Chaos rocks so we can focus on that instead :)

message 9254: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments To be fair, I don't think Divergent is an untouchable thing. I can see why people would dislike it. Far from a masterpiece, I just like it is all. Chaos Walking is one where if someone said they disliked it, I'd really want to know why haha. I'd still respect their opinion, but I'd want to know how one could read through any of those books and not appreciate them.

Good points Tommy :) I just re-read my review of Divergent and noticed that I mentioned that fans of Mortal Instruments and/or Twilight would likely also be fans of Divergent. I wonder if that holds true. It was just a guess on my part.

Hahaha -maybe it is the opposite then! I disliked all three books as well :) So maybe I should rephrase and say if you didn't like Twilight or MI you likely won't like Divergent??

message 9263: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 12, 2015 01:41PM) (new)

Twilight was the first PNR I read and I loved it. Loved MI too but haven't read Divergent. I saw the Divergent movie and liked it but now that I've seen the movie, I won't read the book.

ETA: Chaos Walking is SO different and wonderful. Way better than any of the above series.

I'm a fan of all three :) Out of those three, Twilight is my fave, followed by TMI and then Divergent. Divergent used to be above TMI until the last book. It was so antiepic! While TMI's last books was just about as epic as you can get! LOVED that last book in TMI!

I'm telling you! I am onto something here. As I said in my Divergent review I think I am the type of reader who finds it difficult to just fall into a story but a lot of other readers can do just that (neither style is obviously right or wrong - just different :)

Yeah, you're weird. ;) This is how I feel about the Kate Daniels book.

message 9268: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
Oh yeah. The first Kate Daniels book was horrible. I think in my review I said something about just being plopped into some world (same with Divergent) and having to figure out what was going on. I am not a fan of books like that at all.

Hmm, interesting discussion :D ... I was a fan of both Twilight and TMI when I was in middle school to early high school, but those are both series that, in retrospect, I realized were not that great––even so, I had fun reading them as a young teen. As I got into the later TMI books (books 4 and 5, that is) I wasn't very into them anymore, and I never bothered reading the 6th one. However, I did like Infernal Devices a lot. I think Divergent came out when I was 17 or so, and I liked it at the time I read it ... but then I really didn't like books 2 and 3. With both TMI and Divergent, I'm not sure whether I started disliking them because they were getting worse or whether my taste in books was changing––but maybe it was a little of both. :P

Anyway, Heidi I see what you mean about them being similar. They're all pretty romance-centric and I feel like they have a lot of fans in common.

Also, I am currently almost halfway through:

The Wrath and the Dawn (The Wrath and the Dawn, #1) by Renee Ahdieh

And honestly it's a bit of a letdown for me. I'd heard such positive things about it, but I'm finding it pretty slow and I can't connect with any of the characters. Not a huge fan of the writing, either. But maybe it will get more exciting in the second half?

BRIGID: awwww...I'm sad you said that. I've been meaning to pick it up before Christmas to read it, now I'm doubting it.

message 9272: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ | 2471 comments Mod
Well, maybe it's just me. It does seem to have overwhelmingly positive reviews for the most part, but I guess it's not my thing. It reminds me a lot of books like Throne of Glass, Shadow and Bone, Red Queen, etc. where it mainly focuses on the main character being forced into "royal court life" and the whole "anyone could be a traitor!!" thing, which I've discovered is a pretty popular trope in YA nowadays––and not something that I like much. But for people who do like those kinds of plots, it might be better...? :P

Well, maybe I'll still try it out, but get it from the library now. ^_^

Just finished...
Hollow City (Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children, #2) by Ransom Riggs Sapphire Blue (Precious Stone Trilogy, #2) by Kerstin Gier
Hollow City was pretty good, better than the first. Sapphire Blue was a bit of a disappointment. It was boring and slow paced. I really hate all the romance in it. Really, really, really hate it.

Currently Reading...
The Wicked Will Rise (Dorothy Must Die, #2) by Danielle Paige
Just started it, but from what I've been reading so far, its good!

The Wrath and the Dawn (The Wrath and the Dawn, #1) by Renee Ahdieh

And I guess in the end I liked it okay, I just wasn't super into it and probably won't read the sequel(s).

Now I am starting:

An Ember in the Ashes (An Ember in the Ashes, #1) by Sabaa Tahir

I thought it was a decent ending Tommy - it could have been better but was a solid 3.5 stars for me.

@Tommy - I felt the same way ... Loved the first two books in the series, and then the third and fourth ones were not as strong IMO. They're still good, though.

@Heidi - I've also heard really mixed things about An Ember in the Ashes. I'm like 150 pages into it and I do like it––it's definitely fast-paced and exciting. The world-building is interesting (although I wish there was a little less terminology). And unlike in a lot of other dystopias I've read, I think the villain is actually quite terrifying and the author does a good job of showing how ruthless she is rather than just telling us. It's not extremely original (it's no Chaos Walking or anything), but it is addicting. I will definitely let you know what I think when I finish it! ;)

An Ember in the Ashes (An Ember in the Ashes, #1) by Sabaa Tahir

Wasn't thrilled with it, over all. I liked it in the beginning, but about halfway through it got caught up in insta-love and love triangles and whatnot and it lost my interest.

Dixie Minor | 276 comments I started The City of Ember (Book of Ember, #1) by Jeanne DuPrau I am enjoying it so far! The characters are a little younger than usual in YA books; maybe this book is supposed to appeal to younger teens? It seems like maybe some people in this group were talking about it at some point. Am I imagining that? ;)
