I just find overall if people either love or hate a book I normally hate it. I always try to give things a fair shot though. Since I have so many books I want to read now I normally only read the ones at least 3 or more of my trusted GR friends liked. It must be working because I have rarely read anything I DNF or hate anymore :)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Okay, book update time!

Finished Pure (Covenant, #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout and gave it 3.5 stars. This series is just really okay for me, but I'm starting to get into it a bit more.

Finished The Alex Crow by Andrew Smith and gave it 4 stars, bordering on 4.5. Heidi wanted to know my thoughts. Its really hard to describe...this book is very different and strange, but I was hooked to the story and actually parts of it got very deep. I didn't enjoy it as much as Winger, but I did like it a lot. Lots of "masturbation" humor in this though, be forewarned. Its mainly about a group of 14 year old boys at this very strange camp. But there's a lot more going on behind the scenes. I do recommend this, especially if you want something different.

Now reading Red Queen (Red Queen, #1) by Victoria Aveyard , which I'm LOVING, MILA 2.0 (MILA 2.0, #1) by Debra Driza ,which is meh so far, and I Was Here by Gayle Forman ,good so far.

Thanks Jenny! I am still interested in Alex Crow but have been warned! :)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments I finished The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater earlier. I wasn't completely in love with it all the way through, but HOLY CRAP that ending was perfection.

Up next Nightmares! (Nightmares!, #1) by Jason Segel Not even 100% sure what it's about(assuming bad dreams play a part haha) but it's by Jason Segel, one of my favorite actors(along with co-author Kirsten Miller, so I figured it was worth a go :0)

message 8506: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments I've had NIghtmares on my TBR for a little bit, Tommy. Let me know what you think!

LOVED The Scorpio Races :)

We have moved onto Jenny's Hidden Gem book for this months group read Keeping the Castle Keeping the Castle by Patrice Kindl

Here is the thread https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 8508: by Becky (new)

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I tend to lean towards fantasy, so here are my initial thoughts:

The Naming (The Books of Pellinor, #1) by Alison Croggon
Dealing with Dragons (Enchanted Forest Chronicles, #1) by Patricia C. Wrede
The Goose Girl (The Books of Bayern, #1) by Shannon Hale

I had a couple of other ones that I considered but I saw that quite a few folks had already read them or they are in the middle of a series.

message 8509: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
I have not read any of those Becky. I have read a few Shannon Hale books in the past and enjoyed them.

message 8510: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments I've been wanting to read The Goose Girl for a long time! I'd be thrilled with that one. The others look good too!

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I just realized that I put that on the wrong thread. Whoops!

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments Finished Nightmares! (Nightmares!, #1) by Jason Segel it wasn't a brilliant book, but solid all the way through and a very strong ending. I'll be checking out book 2 for sure.

Up next, The Monstrumologist (The Monstrumologist, #1) by Rick Yancey

YESSS THE MONSTRUMOLOGIST!!!!! I hope you enjoy that one! :D

I have been trying to catch up on all the NetGalley ARCs I've been neglecting. So, I have finished:

The Boy A Thousand Years Wide by David Spon-Smith

It was okay. I feel like it had potential, but the writing was a bit irritating––very repetitive. And it was written in dialect which is fine, but it wasn't done very well/consistently. Too bad, because I really like the title and the cover art is intriguing.

Also finished:

Charlie, Presumed Dead by Anne Heltzel

I liked it. I don't read a lot of mystery/thriller books, so it was refreshing. It has a lot of interesting plot twists. The first half of it or so was okay, and then it got more and more exciting by the end. But then it ended on a cliffhanger––which I wasn't expecting, because I thought it was a standalone. GAAHHH. But it was pretty cool.

Now I am reading:

The Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker

I'm not far into it, but I like it so far.

message 8516: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments I know I'm so excited about the Monstrumologist. Been on my to-read list for years and everyone raving about in all the groups I'm in on this site made me bump it to the front of the line.

I give Brigid all the credit for the Monstrumologist! I read it because of her reviews and then of course if I love something I have to tell pressure everyone on GR to read it too. Then of course David E. read it and loved it so everyone in his group it reading it. I love reading waves like that!! Especially for hidden gem books. That is why I get so upset sometimes about some of these best sellers out there that are just not that well written and/or unique like the Monstrumologist was :)

message 8521: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments And they got me to read it now instead of like 20+ series from now haha. Seems a pretty legit wave.

I am nearly done with Challenger Deep Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman and still not sure how I feel about it. I am also still slowly but surely reading Ice Country Ice Country (The Country Saga, #2) by David Estes on my kindle (blame the Kindle for the slow read not the book!)

message 8526: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie Darren wrote: "In planning on reading one of those books, The Naming, sometime this year. It looks like a good Tolkien-style fantasy."

I've got the Naming sitting on my shelf too. If you want to buddy-read it, let me know!

message 8527: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie Fell asleep on Ashfall last night with twenty pages to go, but I smuggled it into the bathroom at work this morning and finished it. If the first book had THIS much action, tension and adventure, I'd say this will wind up being a three-way tie for my favorite dystopia series alongside Hunger Games and Unwind. SO GOOD.

And now that that's finished, I'm starting Challenger Deep tonight!

Keep me updated on your thoughts on Challenger Deep Ashley! I have about 1-2 hours left of the audiobook and am not in love with it but am also intrigued enough to keep reading. Guess the ending will be the deciding factor!

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I guess I will go with The Goose Girl (The Books of Bayern, #1) by Shannon Hale

Sorry, life's been crazy lately but I think it will finally slow down now that school is almost over.

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I finished Killer Instinct (The Naturals, #2) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes . I would not recommend reading it and I Hunt Killers series too close together. It would be impossible not to compare the two books.

I am almost done with Keeping the Castle by Patrice Kindl .

I'm interested to hear what you think of it in the end, Heidi! I liked it, but I also was not in love with it ... I felt like it was one of those books where the subject matter kind of outweighed the characterization. That is, it felt like it was caught up in portraying an important subject but I didn't feel the characters were as fleshed out as they could have been. The whole surreal thing didn't quite work for me either. I don't know ... very mixed feelings. :P

Brigid that is exactly how I am feeling! I do not feel like I am close to any of the characters which is very important for me as a reader. Still a decent read so far just not as awesome as I was expecting based on the author.

Yeah, exactly. I love Neal Shusterman and it's cool that he tried something different, but it wasn't my favorite of his.

I'm only on page 24 and that's the feeling I'm already getting. Maybe it's because it's something completely opposite of the Unwind books, but it's definitely throwing me for a loop.

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments Finished The Monstrumologist (The Monstrumologist, #1) by Rick Yancey earlier today. Man, the 2nd half or so of that book was gold.

Up next I'll probably finish some comics before deciding between The Curse of the Wendigo (The Monstrumologist, #2) by Rick Yancey and Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles, #2) by Marissa Meyer

Hi all! I'm so sorry I've been gone lately. It's been just one of those crazy months and I haven't had time to log on. Anyways, I'm back!

BRIGID: the main let down for me on Throne of Glass is the main characters as well.

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 440 comments Since I last posted I've finished Bone, Vol. 3 Eyes of the Storm (Bone, #3) by Jeff Smith Bone, Vol. 4 The Dragonslayer (Bone, #4) by Jeff Smith Bone, Vol. 5 Rock Jaw, Master of the Eastern Border (Bone, #5) by Jeff Smith , Locke and Key Vol. 4 Keys to the Kingdom by Joe Hill Locke and Key Vol. 5 Clockworks (Locke & Key) by Joe Hill Locke & Key, Vol. 6 Alpha & Omega by Joe Hill , and The Curse of the Wendigo (The Monstrumologist, #2) by Rick Yancey

4 more books left in the Bone series, a fantasy both epic and hilarious

Locke and Key is... well kind of indescribable. Recommended for "mature" readers. So long as you feel you fall under than umbrella and are not opposed to reading comics, I highly recommend.

And Curse of the Wendigo was just amazing. I really, really like The Monstrumologist, but its sequel blew it out of the water, IMO.

Next up for me, Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles, #2) by Marissa Meyer
