Hi. I recently joined and am eager -- once school ends and the summer begins (I'm a high school English teacher in Danbury, CT, USA) -- to read the threads and recommendations. I love military history, and I kind of hop around -- a few WW II books, then suddenly I'm back into Vietnam, or the Revolutionary War. Re: WW II, I'm a big fan of Atkinson's trilogy, Ambrose's work, Hasting's work, and Beevor's just to name a few. Anyway, glad to be here. Thank you.

Welcome, David. Please pitch in.
I have been reading Sir Archibald Wavell's biography of Edmund Allenby, Allenby: A Study in Greatness. He has twice brought into the book a chaplain, Father Knapp of the Carmelite Order. Knapp was ordered to the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons when they were under Allenby's command in the Transvaal. It was a regiment raised among Protestant elements of Northern Ireland and originally formed to fight King James. The appointment of an RC chaplain caused concern within the regiment. Allenby took the chaplain into his own mess. He later said of Father Knapp: "Quite the best specimen of Army Chaplain I've ever met." Knapp earned an MC in France and was KIA with the Irish Guards in 1917.
