THE WORLD WAR TWO GROUP discussion
Introduction to the WW2 Site - Please Say Hi
I recommend YANK by Ted Ellsworth. Also RESTLESS by William Boyd and MY FATHER'S FORTUNE by Michael Frayn. I especially like fiction and memoir set in WW II England.
Hi Elizabeth and welcome to the group, I hope you find a few things of interest here and I look forward to more of your comments in the various threads. If you like please post information on your book/s in the authors area:http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/8...
Hi Elizabeth,You might want to check out my FALL EAGLE ONE. A good bit of the book takes place at Bletchley Park with the Allied codebreakers. You can raed the Prologue and first chapter and a half by clicking on "Look Inside" on my Amazon catalog page. http://amzn.to/ITGoGk
Hello everyone,My name is Jeffrey M. Leatherwood, Ph.D, and I would like to remind everyone of my upcoming book, "Nine from Aberdeen," a military history honoring some of World War II's unsung heroes – the Ordnance Bomb Disposal technicians, who were among the forerunners of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD).
This book represents nearly ten years of research, and includes an afterword from EOD Command Sergeant Major Jim Clifford, military consultant for The Hurt Locker, the Motion Picture Academy's Best Film of 2010.
I will be very busy promoting this book in the U.S., and I have been invited to the next two EOD Veterans meetings in Texas and Virginia. All this plus my full teaching load! So, unfortunately, I will be unable to participate in discussions as often as I should like!
Keep my book in mind -- it is available for pre-order through Amazon and Barnes & Noble, as well as direct from the publishers at Cambridge Scholars (CSP).
Hi Jeffrey and welcome to the group. I look forward to your participation in some of the discussions and if you wanted to post details about your forthcoming book you can post the details here:http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/8...

The easier tom learn to play is Unity of Command the much harder to learn to play but one of the best games about the eastern front I have ever played is Gary Grigsby's War in the East. Matrix Games is a the perfect site to find these or any other war game you might be interested in...welcome by the way.
Hi Paul, good to see you here, I hope you enjoy yourself. In regards to good computer games check out this thread:http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/9...

Interesting... my English paternal grandmother (by that time divorced from my grandfather) met and married an American flyer in London during WWII. Unfortunately both are long dead and I never heard any stories about their romance. After the war they returned to a small diary ranch in swampy central Florida, where my grandmother stuck it out for 20 years before asking for another divorce. That she was Jewish and he a born-again Christian made their affair even stranger. Your book sounds interesting, perhaps it will become a romantic period film...

Howdy. I'm a high schooler with lots of interest in history, especially WW2, the Wild West, and the era between WW1 & WW2.
I'm looking forward to reading some of the discussions.
Hello everyone. My name is Ken. I recently rejoined GoodReads, I was a member a few years ago, but left when FaceBook became popular... big mistake!
I am the son of a WWII veteran and Pearl Harbor Survivor. My Dad was a flight mech in the Army Air Corps from 1940 until the end of the war. He was stationed at Bellows Field, Hawaii on December 7th, 1941, assigned to the 86th Observation Squad... he flew as a flight mech on the North American O-47, a three seater recon and photo mapping plane. Later in the war he served on Saipan Island in the Mariana Islands.
I am also a veteran, of the US Coast Guard, I served in the late 1970s/early 1980s, as a C-130 SAR Dropmaster, in Kodiak, AK.
I've read widely on WWII, especially Pearl Harbor, the Pacific campaigns, Saipan, the Aleutian Islands, and the Winter War of 1939-1940 in Finland against the Russians. Three of my grandparents were Finnish immigrants, and I have relatives who fought in the Winter War. I also have an interest in the US homefront during the war, and the aftermath of the war in the US, Europe, and the Pacific.
I look forward to participating in this group, and meeting others who have an interest in WWII.

Hi Kaleb and Ken,A big welcome to you both, thanks for taking the time to introduce yourselves to the group. I hope you both find a few books and discussions here of interest and I look forward to chatting with you both in some of the threads/forums.
Thanks for the welcome, Rick and Geevee. I'm already finding some good recommendations here, and look forward to the discussions. I compared my books to those that you both have listed, and we've read a number of the same books on WWII, as well as from a few other categories. Feel free to check out my shelves, especially World War 2, Coast Guard, and History... there is some overlap with those.

there'll be no problem, that is, if everything is in order.
quite the interesting family history. as if those events
weren't interesting enough, it always makes them more
so when we know folks who were involved.
i've always had an affinity for Finland also. once upon
a time i was in the running for a rhodes scholarship to
finland. mind you i was running last, but still running.
i'd studied all the words of frans sillanpaa their
nobel prize winner for literature.

Carl, thanks for the welcome. Finns are quite fond of Sillanpaa, in much the same way that Americans are fond of John Steinbeck. He is to Finnish literature what Sibelius is to Finnish music... a national treasure. I have not read any of his works, but my maternal grandmother enjoyed his novels in her native language. I believe a few have been translated.
New group member reporting for duty. I'm Joe, an avid reader but new to goodreads and this is my first and only group (so far). I'm 43 with a wife and a set of 5yr. old triplets (2 boys and a girl) and I have never been in the military. I do have a passion for reading/learning about the history of war with WWII and the American Civil War garnering the majority of my interest. Currently I'm reading "Death of a Nazi Army: The Falaise Pocket" by William Breuer, which I'm loving and anxious to read more of his books (although admittedly, I'm a slow reader). Aussie Rick made me feel very welcome so I thought I would jump on and introduce myself. I'm eager to join some discussions and read some books together with the group...Thanks,
Welcome Joe, I'm relatively new to this group myself - great group of people, and recently re-joined GoodReads.
c'mon in joe and have a seat, well probably not in AR's chair though, anywhere else if fine. Joe wrote: "New group member reporting for duty. Hello. I started reading about WWII in the late 80's after I joined the military. It has been an interest ever since. I just joined goodreads recently. Most of my books were lost a few years ago, in a move, but I am starting my collection again.
Hi Brian, to be honest I don't know how I would have handled lossing my books in a move!Anyhow welcome to the group and I hope you find a few new titles of interest to add to your new collection.
Brian--permission to come aboard... granted-..i believe our fine membership will assist you in reconstructing your library--best site on the web for ww2...by far! You sir have found a home -welcome--full speed ahead.
Also may i welcome Ken aboard....i must have been on r&r when Ken reported for duty....a former member i understand...good to have you back.
Welcome Brian... I can only imagine the anguish I would suffer if my book collection was lost. I sometimes regret that I've weeded out and donated books, that in retrospect, I wish I had held onto!
And thanks, Wade, for the welcome!
And thanks, Wade, for the welcome!
Thanks to everyone. I was looking around the site, and this looked like the best group for me to start with. I'm already making a list from the recommended reads.
Hi everyone. My name is Matt, I'm a Comp Sci student and I like to read books on the two World Wars - biographies and memoirs as well as political history. My first foray into this subject was a book called Currahee!: A Screaming Eagle at Normandy which my dad gave me when I was about 15. I read it about 10 times, lost the cover, and eventually the whole book! Since then I've expanded my collection, and just last year I bought myself a new copy of Currahee! and I've read it another few times!Anyway, here I am, hello everyone and I hope to discuss some good books with you all. :)
