LOL sorry for the late rep! I actually went to be after my "Thank you". Anyhow, I'm fine right now. I just finished reading the first volume of Ian Kershaw's "Hitler" biography. I'm already a quarter through the second volume, but I think I ought to take a break for a while. I can actually feel my brain roll from all the reading. I don't want to burn out just because of Hitler. LOL!

How are you finding Ian Kershaw as a writer Jolo? I have his latest book yet to read; The End: The Defiance & Destruction of Hitler's Germany 1944-45.

So far, I think he's incredibly informative. His prose is highly articulate, and not at all boring, even as he has the tendency to drag on some unimportant detail. Though I have to admit, some details, even if we deem unimportant, may turn out incredibly revealing. Like Hitler's bad breath and all around bad manners. I personally thought I didn't need to know that, but I guess its part and parcel of his disturbing character. Kershaw strives and succeeds, (at least for me) to make a tangible picture of Hitler "the man" rather than the myth.

On the other hand though, the books don't really give much into detailing Hitler's psyche, which isn't really much of the point of the books. I was hoping that it would reveal more on that point, but I think Kershaw realized that it would be far too difficult and out of his depth to do. I do applaud him on his point about the "Working Towards the Fuhrer" concept in helping to explain how and why the Third Reich even functioned at all. Incredibly fascinating for a layman such as myself!

I'm thinking of getting that last one as well. I think he mentioned it being his final book on the Third Reich. It's a rather befitting title.

Some very good observations there Jolo, it seems that you are enjoying the book, bad breath and all! The End has picked up some very good reader reviews so I am keen to try and squeeze it in sometime soon, I just don't know when!

Just joined as well. I've been a WW2 buff for as long as I can remember. I did my bachelor's in 20th Century History (which is a very expensive way to feed the hobby!).

My grandfather was a Polish reservist, and was sent east after the Soviets invaded, got captured and spent a few years in a Soviet POW camp somewhere in Uzbekistan, before being released into Ander's Army, and travelled to Scotland via Iran, where he joined the RAF (it had the best looking uniform).

After the war, he immigrated to New Zealand, where he lived until his death, when I was very young.

I guess that story has had a big influence on my interests in WW2, in the stories on the sideline (like the Battle of Khalkin-Gol) and behind the scenes, the social and the homefront stories.
