Just started Ben Pastor Lumen. I loved her series set in Ancient Rome The Water Thief, and this one is 1939 starting in Cracow.

Finished City of Silver by Annamaria Alfieri and really enjoyed it. Would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a mystery that involves the political of the times with no holds barred plus the 17th century setting, in the Andes mountains, silver mining complete with the conflicts and attitdes of the times. Now I'm about to dive into two Ben MacIntyre true espionage novels, came highly recommended, and in looking over the blurbs also, I think I'll enjoy them.
Started Kathy Reichs' "Virals". Written for younger generation, introduces Tempe Brennan's grand niece as starring character.
I just finished reading 10th Anniversaryby James Patterson and have started on his Along Came a Spider. It is so funny how different his writing styles are on the two different series.
Just finished Moonlight Mile
Lehane is, as always, vital, strong and interesting.
He's putting the series to bed with this one and it feels like it. But if you're a fan of his, it feels a bit like spending quality time with an old friend.
Recently finished Eyes of the Innocent: A Mystery by Brad Parks. I thought it was a good modern mystery with the backdrop of the real estate crash, newspapers going belly-up and politicians with skeletons in the closet. I'm a journalist by day, so always interesting to see how a former journalist writes about the industry.
Diane wrote: "Reading the Magic Bullet by Larry Millet which is a locked room mystery set in Minnesota. Never read this author brfore and it hasn't been reviewed on this site which I have to say is a first for m..."Hi, Diane --
I live in the Twin Cities. This story sounds really interesting. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
NO!!!! Say it isn't so, Alex! I thought maybe Lehane was just starting up again. No more Bubba? That's just unthinkable!
Started reading Lumen by Ben Pastor and am enjoying it very much. Set in 1939 Cracow. The two main characters are a German intelligence officer with the Wehrmacht and a Chicago priest sent by the Pope to investigate the abbess of a convent who has visions and stigmata...
T wrote: "Started Kathy Reichs' "Virals". Written for younger generation, introduces Tempe Brennan's grand niece as starring character."Any good? I really liked Kathy Reich's earlier books, but I've not been that impressed with the more recent ones.
Kim: not as good as the earlier T. Brennan books, but I think this might go better for the younger female set. I'm thinking young guys are going to think this too chick-oriented. I kind of think I wouldn't pick up any more if she continues this as a series.
I just finished
The Devil She Knows: A Novel and I really loved it. If you're a fan of crime fiction that is somewhat dark and gritty (think of gangsters in the 40's and lots of men wearing fedoras) this book is for you!
Would love to see the books main character Maureen have a series.

I am now reading Heartbreaker by Julie Garwood and it is really really good! Hooked me from page one!!
Susan wrote: "I am now reading Heartbreaker by Julie Garwood and it is really really good! Hooked me from page one!!"I tried reading that one but I couldn't deal with all the product placement. It is bad enough in a movie, I don't need it in a book. Not with brand names. And the story seemed kind of sappy to me, too.
T wrote: "Kim: not as good as the earlier T. Brennan books, but I think this might go better for the younger female set. I'm thinking young guys are going to think this too chick-oriented. Funny isn't it how some writers of crime fiction series improve as they go on (I think this is more or less true of Elizabeth George, for example) and others at some point seem to start phoning it in.
I've just finished reading claire-obscure on my Kindle. Although it's a hard book to categorise, not fitting neatly into any one genre, it's one of the most suspense-full books I've ever read. It's incredibly dark, but strangely compelling. (And I was the first person to review it on Goodreads, so it's clearly not getting the attention it deserves).Next I'll be going back to the opposite extreme, with the Strawberry Shortcake Murder, which will be a light & cozy mystery if the first in the series is anything to go by.
I just finished And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. Oh wow, what a superb plot, I was hooked from the start and couldn't put it down. Highly recommneded to all x x

Have to admit that I got lost in the..."That sounds intriguing - I haven't read a Prey book in a while, but Lucas Davenport is one of my favorite serial characters, and I love Sandford's writing. This may be the impetus I need to get back on the bandwagon -thanks for the rec!
I just finished The Summoner by Layton Green, and loved it. There were definitely parts that were a little graphic for folks with a weak stomach, but, overall, it was a well-written and particularly well-researched mystery. I'm looking forward to the next one in the series.
Just began Misterioso by Arne Dahl for Amazon Vine. Really starting to like these Scandinavian writers. This one, going by the back-of-book description, sounds like it has a little similarity to a favorite Italian thriller flick from the 1970s called Deep Red.
Kim: regarding Reichs' Viral - I don't know that I'd call it "phoning it in", although I agree that some authors are getting stagnant. I think "Virals" is more like branching out and trying to garner some of the younger readers. Ridley Pearson has the "Kingdom Keepers" series, which appeals to the younger readers, and is doing well with it. I started a young cousin on these and his Mom was delighted that I had managed to find a book that he actually enjoyed and wanted to read. Up till then, he wasn't much of a reader, but he enjoyed his first Kingdom Keeper book so much that he raved about it to his friends and got them all hooked. I noticed they were all commenting on eagerly awaiting the next book, so they've maintained this level of interest.
Just my thoughts....
I've just started Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. I'm only a few chapters in and its good. I really like her writing style.Stefanie - I think you'll like Brothers Grimm. I've read all of his books and really enjoyed them.
Reading a new book that is the first in a series called Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead. Very different but I am enjoying it.

I'll have to give it another go :)
I am reading The Death of Achilles by Boris Akunin. It is the fourth (I think) in the Erast Fandorin series.....I really like this Russian author and the translation by Arthur Bromfield certainly seems to capture the story perfectly. I love this character and the setting of the late 1800s in Imperial Russia.
Stefanie wrote: "going to start with The Calling of the Grave by simon beckett tonight"I didn't realise there was a 4th book in the David Hunter series... thanks!

I love the David Hunter series! Hope you enjoy Calling of the Grave it's really good x x
I've started The Hanging Tree by David Lambkin. Not very far into it, but certainly captures my attention. I'm only sorry that at this point this is the only one of his available in the US at a reasonable price.
Just starting The Ghost Writer. Really liked Harwood's book "The Seance" so hoping this one delivers as well.
T wrote: "Finished Buried Prey this morning. Loved that it went back to Lucas Davenport's beginnings as a detective and connected it to his current life. Have to admit that I got lost in the..."have read all The Prey series, love Davenport, Sandford is a great writer. Just finished Storm Prey and await the paperback release of Buried Prey.
Just started The Broken Souls, Jack Kerley, having just finished The Hundredth Man and The Death Collector. Really enjoying them and already have the next one lined up to read. Great murder/thrillers that keep you guessing and on-edge to the last page.

Gatorman, regarding Jack Kerley, the availability of some of his books depends on where you live. He has a few in this same series that have been published in the UK that have not yet been published in the U.S. In UK he publishes under the name J.A. Kerley. I've purchased a couple thru Amazon.uk.As for me, I'm reading a historical mystery that I got as a free download for my Nook, The Hanover Square Affair. It's really good and I've purchased the ebooks of the next three in the series.
Gatorman wrote: "Mary wrote: "Just started The Broken Souls, Jack Kerley, having just finished The Hundredth Man and The Death Collector. I bought them through either www.the bookdepository.com or www.play.com
Hi everyone! Though not a mystery I just finished
Alice Bliss and WOW. This is a gem of a book. A coming of age tale that is so moving. I had a reading first with this book, in that I actually cried during the final scene. It was 2am and there I was sitting on the edge of the bed with sobbing tears. Never had it happen before.
But Alice is a moving young woman.
A def. and rare 5* read for me.

Have to admit..."Virgil appears in some of the Prey series and I have Rough Country, which is a Virgil Flowers book, and I hope to get the others he appears in soon.
I'm in the mood for cozies this week so I've got two. I'm reading Don't Cry for Me, Hot Pastrami: A Ruby, the Rabbi's Wife Mystery by Sharon Kahn. This is the second book I've read in this series. The books are funny and entertaining.
I'm also listening to the audio of Size 14 Is Not Fat Either by Meg Cabot.
Also light and amusing.

Gatorman wrote: "Mary wrote: "Gatorman wrote: "Mary wrote: "Just started The Broken Souls, Jack Kerley, having just finished The Hundredth Man and The Death Collector. Really enjoying them and already have the next..."All of them are available at Amazon in U.S.
Haven't been able to concentrate on reading for the last few weeks and have had a few semi-clunkers. The books weren't bad, just not right for me right now.
So I'm re-reading The Alienist, which is always a pleasure. And because I can never read just one, I'm also reading Neither Here nor There: Travels in Europe and The Color of Magic

Although I am reading a Jack Kerley book at present, I was in need of some reading material today while I was at an appointment, so I picked up "Vengence Road" by Rick Mofina, have not read him before, and it's very good.
Just finished "So Cold the River" by Michael Koryta. First book by this author and got it from the library as it has been so highly praised on a couple of lists I'm on.Anxiously awaiting the arrival of the latest Sheriff Longmier book by Craig Johnson.
