Deb Krill I am into the Kay Hooper Bishop Series, just picked up today her newest/first in a new series The First Prophet. Looking forward to sitting down and turning the pages!
but first and don't laugh at me I am also a Nora Roberts Fan and love her love stories, I am currently on book three of the boonsborough inn series before I open Kay's book to read.
Besides Nora can put a twist with some mystery in her writing also.

Elli | 228 comments Finished Deborah Swift's The Gilded Lily, set in Restoration London, and really enjoyed it. Will review it tomorrow a.m. probably. It's getting late and I want to hit a couple chapters of my next book before calling it a night. Went to a Christmas presentation at one of the major art centers here (Phoenix,AZ) which involved some of the circus acts type of things with wonderful performers and good music. And I'm still floating....

Mark Capell (mark_capell) | 39 comments I'm reading a Lee Child novel Without Fail (Jack Reacher, #6) by Lee Child and I can't make up my mind. Do I like Jack Reacher as a character? For sure, Lee Child is a good writer. A very good writer. But Jack Reacher? For me, I think he might be a little too archetypal. Big guy walks into town, cleans up the town, leaves. It's probably because Lee Child is so adroit that I'm still reading.

Oh dear, not another Philip Marlowe descendant. Can't we ban them for a period of five years? So that we can see what other personalities can be developed into detectives.

message 8716: by John (new)

John (jkbrown2) | 389 comments Just finished Death in the Clouds by Agatha Christie. Its been years since I last read any Christie, but I really enjoyed it and plan to read more. Now back to my goal to reread the Harry Potter series this year. Two more books to go. I am currently reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling.

message 8717: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) I just finished Missing Daughter, Shattered Family Missing Daughter, Shattered Family by Liz Strange by Liz Strange and really liked it. She combines a mystery and a compelling story of former police detective who is now a private investigator. He had to leave the force after a severe beating because of his sexuality. It's an interesting story with quite a few twists.

Chandler's essay on the topic of detective fiction is as timely today as when it was written in 1950. Here it is:

Just finished reading it. Very interesting and pinpoints the problems and choices facing anybody who writes crime fiction.

I disagree to some extent with Chandler's views on realism. But that's only because, since he wrote it, 'realism' has become a shield behind which a lot of crime fiction hides -- the attitude that the more 'realistic' something is, the better it is.

The fundamental problem with that, often, is that what is portrayed as realism is nothing of the sort. It's just a cliche of the genre, hence the never ending drip, drip, drip of Philip Marlowe type detectives.

The other reason I don't like that attitude is that it's a creative dead end. Look at any David Lynch film (not a novelist, but first name that comes to mind). Not realistic at all, but so imaginative and, even if you don't like him, it's hard to argue against the fact that his work enriches the crime genre.

I think, or I hope, stories will be less 'padded' than they used to be. There was a time when if you wanted your novel published you had to reach a certain word count -- with inevitable consequences. Now with ebooks, a story doesn't have to be bulked up so that it looks good value for money.

PS My favourite novels are actually novellas.

I think we Reacher fans read the books just for that reason... the idea of this type of mostly silent quasi superhero who blows into town, kicks arse, saves the girl/day/child/puppy etc... then picks up his toothbrush and leaves is entirely too appealing. (grin)

Bill I finally gave up on Detective Inspector Huss by Helene Tursten this morning after reading about half of it. The poor translation and the way it was jumping around finally got to me. I decided to start Shakespeare's Christmas (A Lily Bard Mystery, #3) by Charlaine Harris by Charlaine Harris. I'm also about 400 pages into A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, #3) by George R.R. Martin by George R.R. Martin and enjoying as much as the first two; nice twists and turns.

My boss loves this series. She said to me "If you just realize that Reacher is superman then the reads are entertaining and more enjoyable." I had a hard time with the second book Die Trying because it seemed to far fetched and unrealistic.

message 8732: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey | 51 comments For my money, Lee Child is the best thriller writer out there.
I love the character of Jack Reacher, a drifter with just the clothes on his back, which allows Mr. Child the opportunity to put the character anywhere, and in any situation.
Above all, Child is an outstanding writer.

Nicolette (nicoletteg) | 10 comments I have just finished 'The Innocent' by David Baldacci. It wasnt as good as some of Baldacci's other work, however I still really enjoyed it. I also recently read 'Seige' by Simon Kernick and it was so good I finished it in one sitting. I just couldn't put it down! Fast-paced and full of action,Kernick is fast becoming one of my favourite authors.

I also finished Peter James's 'Not Dead Yet' last week. I was looking forward to reading it and was very disappointed with it. It was very slow and there were some chapters that seemed to have no relevance whatsoever.
