It's the one with Katniss standing in front of the stadium. Says The Hunger Games at the bottom and has the flaming mockingjay at the top.

I never picked, but I'm listening to the book again and I think I might be going towards Gale.
But it might change if I re-read the rest, I am pretty fickle.

(For those of you who don't get the joke, it's a Citizen Kane reference)

Aaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!! TELL US...everything! What did you think?!?!
Yeah, super jealous of you right now.

message 1472: by Kurukka (last edited Mar 17, 2012 05:32AM) (new)

Kurukka It was pretty good ! I'll try not to spoil it for you. Everything seems accelerated because it doesn't have the development of the book and Katniss's narration so this may shock a little but I thin that after many rewatches, you get used to it and can fully appreciate the movie.

Jennifer is an emotionnal bomb and her deep, broken voice adds so much when she's breaking down (Willow as well, her screams are like a knife in your guts, honestly).

I was bothered by some scenes and quotes that weren't in the movie but it doesn't hurt the main purpose of the movie. I also didn't like the mutts at the end, they weren't what I pictured but it's a detail too.

What really impressed me was the Capitol stuff. The movie is divided in two points of view : the districts/arena and the Capitol/Gamemakers/Snow. It is very well done. The contrast between the extravagance of the Capitol and the misery of the districts is shocking. On one side, there are so much colors, food, luxury and on the other, the districts are in grey colors, and you get images like an old man gnawing at bones with dirty hands, wooden houses crumbling down. Effie is perfect ("MANNERS !"), and her relationship with Haymitch is so funny. Haymitch himself is good, I was no fan of his blonde wig but the version created by Woody is great, though he looks softer than in the book. (view spoiler)

The control room is just... WOW. You see these people manipulating poor kids in a cage like animals. They shoot Katniss with fireballs and mutts with smiles on their faces and Seneca is the boss, he has much more time on screen than I thought he would have (as well as conversations with Snow) and his last scene is great, it was a subtle add to the story giving us a clue of how serious is the berries thing.

The ending was a bit rushed though, not at all like in the book and there was one element in particular that bothered me (view spoiler)

And also (view spoiler)

Overall, the movie is not explicit on the violence. I didn't think there was that much blood and the camera-on-the-shoulder-style makes it difficult to distinguish anything when the characters fight. It's very fast and blurry.

Oh and the scene when Katniss blow up the careers' food was very good too. The effects are very good and there's this little scene when (view spoiler) I loved Katniss's look of fright at that moment because sometimes I thought she looked too strong. The scenes where she shoves Peeta is... more brutal than in the book and I thought that it really made him look like a wimp xD

The fight scenes I really loved the best were the Katniss/Clove scene and the Cato/Peeta/Katniss fight on the Cornucopia. Josh wasn't lying when he said that Alexander really strangled him, lol ! And Tresh was really scary when he yelled at Clove with his gruffy voice. Her death scene is (view spoiler). And Clove yelling Cato's name was just how I pictured it. One moment she's running the show, ready to kill Katniss and then she's just peeing her pants.

I have to admit however, that I didn't really like Rue's death sequence. It lasts for about 5 minutes full I think, and sometimes I found it too dramatic, like it seemed a bit fake to me... I don't know, I'm divided on this one, didn't really like the choregraphy. However there is scene that follows just after (view spoiler)

So that's it. If you have more specific questions, go ahead !

Heidi Thanks for your thoughts Cecilia!!!

message 1474: by Diana (last edited Mar 17, 2012 02:42PM) (new)

Diana I was just looking through this discussion from the beginning to now, it's so weird seeing how everything has progressed. From before it was a movie, to when a movie was announced, to learning the cast and seeing the first pictures and here we are today with a viewers first opinion.
I still remember the weekend 2 years ago when I was first told to read the book.

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Oh man, I couldn't help it and read all the spoilers too. I can not wait until Thursday! I can not wait. Even reading that makes me want to sniffle.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I love this little unscripted thing with Elizabeth Banks, Josh & Jennifer. (They make a Kentucky joke but since they are from KY it's allowed).

Heidi Just bought my ticket to see The Hunger Games on the IMAX this Saturday so the age old question about the unibrow can finally be laid to rest.

message 1491: by Isamlq (new)

Isamlq | 177 comments THG was the most fun my brother and I have had in a long time. It wasn't just the movie either. All his 'planning' was hilarious. He made us clear our schedules today. Then he had us pick something to keep us busy, (view spoiler) so we wouldn't be too bored waiting. I thought three hours was too long a wait. But we had a blast... and was I glad not to be on the end of this (view spoiler)

On the movie...

I really enjoyed it even without a re-read. It made me remember what I felt when I was reading certain scenes... (view spoiler)

message 1492: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Ugh! Want to read spoilers soooo bad.

message 1493: by [deleted user] (new)

I read them. :P Can't wait to see it!

message 1494: by Roshini (new)

Roshini The movie was really great! I was a bit nervous about watching it since it took me a few days to get over some of the stuff when I read the book, but it turns out my imagination is scarier than what was on film:-) The only problem I had was a lot of it felt like it was shot with a handheld camera so I had a headache about 10 mins into the movie:-(

Woody Harrelson was amazing, by the way:-)

message 1496: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't get to see it until the 1st but will be going to see it with my family and my friends and their families and then do dinner after. There will probably be about 20 of us going. We did something similar for Alice in Wonderland and it was a lot of fun. Just waiting for tickets to go on sale for that day so we can buy them.

I love reading about everyone's experience going to see it so keep posting!

Bethany | 578 comments I'm going to the midnight showing tonight and then again on Friday with friends :)

message 1498: by Julie (new)

Julie My sister-in-law and I invited all our friends to go see it on the 31st and have a girl's night with some drinks and food after so I'm pretty excited. I'm not sure if I can wait that long though! I might have to sneak out to an IMAX showing during the day Tuesday.

message 1499: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments My husband is in charge of getting tickets. I haven't heard from him yet *sigh*. We have to go super late because baby has to be asleep before we go and she's been fighting bedtime like crazy lately. But I can hardly wait!

That sounds fun! I wish I lived close enough to 20 of my friends to go with! Jealous!
