Spring Challenge 2010 Completed Tasks

New total: 350 points

I’m ready to claim another task!
20.8 Read a book or two (must be at least 500 pages) where magic, a magician, or an escape is a prominent feature.
I read: The Magicians by Lev Grossman (402 pages) and A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin (197 pages)
402 + 197 = 599 pages
The Magicians is about an adolescent male who is recruited into a Magical College training Magicians. Magic abounds throughout the novel; however, the magical elements are “window-dressing” for the novel. The author is obviously inspired by both Hogwarts and Narnia. His viewpoint character is a sarcastic and cynical young man from a low-middle-class background. Therefore, the sense of wonder that is usually present in fantasy novels is completely absent. Overall, The Magicians is an inventive and exasperating story, about a 100 pages longer than it needed to be in.
The Goodreads review of A Wizard of Earthsea (which has been on my TBR list since the 1970s) says: "It is a tale of wizards, dragons and shadows played out in Earthsea, a world of numberless islands and vast oceans where mages, looking for adventure, wandered, working magic..." I loved this book!

I might have one more task to claim on Monday; depends on the rest of my weekend; but it is also possible that this is my last task of this challenge.

15.9 Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella (Madeleine Wickham)If I was to write under a pen name, it would be Sidney Lynn, because the Sidney I know has such a great imagination, it would inspiration to my writing
20.1 Melancholy Baby - A Sunny Randall Novel by Robert B Parker
20.9 Blue Screen by Robert B Parker (blue cheese)
20.6 Perish Twice - A Sunny Randall Novel by Robert B Parker - I enjoy when an author links his characters together from one series to another. It makes me feel like I am reading both series at one time.
25.5 Spare Change by Robert B Parker - 306 pages
Stranger in Paradise by Robert B Parker 387 pages
Night and Day by Robert B Parker - 307 pages
25.1 Nero Wolfe - Rex Stout
Nero Wolfe - Robert Goldsborough
When I started reading Nero Wolfe by Robert Goldsborough, I felt like I was reading Nero Wolfe by Rex Stout. The characters, the plot and how it was written, made me feel like I had picked up the next book by Rex Stout, not a book written 40 years later.
25.4 A: Dead Cold by Louise Penny (my second name is Louise)
B: Missing Mark by Julie Kramer
30.1 A: Spring Fancy by Lavyrle Spencer
B: The Throw-Away Bride by Ann Major"
30.4 A: King of the Mountain by M.K. Wren
B: Down Rivier by John Hart
30.6 A. Stalking Susan by Julie Kramer the main character talks about novels that pioneer in a specific genre or stroytelling technique and Agatha Christie's The Murder of Roger Ackyrod is one of them
B. The Murder of Roger Ackyrod by Agatha Christie

Task 30.3: I read The Hole We're In and Await Your Reply.
Task 5.1: I read Little Bee
Final point total: 340

For 10.8 I read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It is not my "thing" but I certainly found it amusing enough to enjoy it!
For 20.10 I read The Golden Compass. I posted my opinions on the thread (message 42).

I have already brought the book to a Thrift Shop with other books and clothing to recycle it onwards. I hope someone picks it up and enjoys it like I did.
The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loano was.....interesting. Reviewing a book like this is hard because although it is an interesting story, very well told and it draws the reader in, there are also the over-descriptive sections that go on and on and on and on.
The narrator, Yambo, awakes after a stroke without his memories. He goes to his family/childhood home to try to reawaken his memories and submerses himself into the books, records, newspapers of the past (it's amazing how much of a fire hazard this house is with it's tons of old newspapers and magazines). It's a unique method of reliving/retelling the past.
There are some very interesting looks into facist Italy during the war. The stories of the people as they lived through these times were quite heroic. Good people caught in hard times.
The ending is a bit abrupt and leaves some loose ends but the reality of the situation makes it plausible and "okay". It's really quite effective.
Eco rambles a little bit as he studies the aspects of memory loss on a person in lots and lots ....and lots....of detail. There are times when he could move onwards quicker than he does.
......off to finish one more task before the end of the Challenge.

Thank you, Petra! Just messaged my task to Cynthia. Cannot wait for it to be posted!!!

I finished 5.6 by reading Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Lisa See is a goodreads author.
Also I read That Summer for 10.2. It has a rating of 3.54. Sarah Dessen is also a goodreads author
My total should be 640. Thanks!

For 10.8 I read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It is not my "thing" but I certainly found it..."
WAI~! *does her book-fan dance* Grats, Nicole!
Everyone who has not met their goal: you can do it! You've still got almost two entire days! ^_^

In honor of Queen Victoria, the longest reigning British Monarch, read a book written by an author who lived during her lifetime (May 24, 1819 – January 22, 1901)
Swoop! Or How Clarence Saved England by PG Wodehouse

Leora's - Spring Cleaning:
857 pages of books from my shelves, boxes and kindle. Thanks for this task, great motivator to read some of those books that needed to be cleared out. No 4* or 5*s but all good reads that fit in between some of the deeper materials.
A. Walking in Circles Before Lying Down: A Novel by Merrill Markoe 279 pages 3*
B. The Old Country by Mordecai Gerstein 144 pages 3*
C. The President's Angel by Sophy Burnham 164 pages 3*
D. Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout 270 pages 3*
Disappointed in Olive Kitteridge. Was expecting it to be really good but it was only so-so. As a Pulitzer, I expect great things but this was slow and not particularly compelling. Now I am going to read Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson since his was the original of this type of short story anthology. Would be nice to see how they compare.
Part of my goal this time was to read books that have been on my shelves for a while. Here are my numbers:

Yay for finishing the challenge! Now we'll get even more tasks!

On Monday 1st March I started a new job as City Archivist of Wolverhampton, England. This involves helping people research their family history and/or the history of their local area. For this task I'm hoping to inspire you to visit your local archive! Read two of the following:
A. A non-fiction book about researching family history.
B. A fictional "family saga" book.
C. A fictional book about your local area or region.
D. A non-fiction book about the history of your local area.
I did parts A and B. I read The Faraday Girls

Cynthia, sorry I left out the extra part of 15.3. As posted earlier, I read:
The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales: 51 pages
How the Grinch Stole Christmas!: 64 pages
I'm not sure I'd include Stinky Cheese in the list. It's cute, but obligatory reading? Eh. The Grinch, however, is one of the books that I think a childhood would be lesser for having omitted it -- plus, you just plain miss a lot of allusions without it.
At the top of the list, I think I'd put To Kill a Mockingbird, but I'm not sure if I'd say the same thing tomorrow.
Also, I'd like to move a book around.
NEW 5.2:
Originally I put The Wildwater Walking Club by Claire Cook under 10.4. Instead, I'd like to move that to 5.2 since a lavender farm and the idea of gardening lavender in general plays a big role in the book.
NEW 10.4:
In that book's place, please put The Finishing Touches by Hester Browne. It's already on its way to a new owner. :)

P.S: CONGRATS to all those who've finished the challenge this season--there are so many of you! I don't think I'll ever have time to finish completely, so I am in awe of you!

I have completed: Task 15.9 ~ Pen Name by reading Adam Bede by George Eliot. George Eliot is the pen name of Mary Ann Evans. Interestingly, she also used the name Marian Evans later on in life.
If I were to adopt a pen name I would use Eliza Gardner in tribute to my great-grandmother, Elspeth Bell Gardner, who was a published author (E.B. Gardner, couldn't let on she was a woman) in the 1920's and 1930's. She wrote adventure stories for girls, featuring Maxie, a precocious orphan entrusted to her uncle.
I would like to claim one big book ticket. This novel is 624 pages in length.

Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More: The Last Soviet Generation by Alexei Yurchak
This may seem like a strange title to relate to my personal life philosophy, but I feel like it relates pretty well since my basic philosophy of life is to be grateful for all that I have going for me at any given moment and to not focus too deeply on the downside of life because everything, both good and bad, is temporary. So even though it may sometimes seem like everything will be the same forever and that I'll always be feeling the way I am right now, I recognize that it's important to revel in the good stuff and try to push past all the bad stuff because way too quickly it's all going to be "no more" anyway.

That's it for my first challenge. I really enjoyed doing this. Thank you to all who spent the time to put this together. I am looking forward to the Summer Challenge starting in two days!!

10.5: The White Mary: A Novel by Kira Salek
15.3 Travels with Charley: In Search of America by John Steinbeck
This was on page 5. The book that should be on the top of the list is...I think I will go with my favorite Hemingway here- Islands in the Stream : A Novel. I've always loved this book and have read it many times. It has so many important messages in it and covers a lot of info. I usually recommend this on and Song of Solomon as my two favorites.
15.10 The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff
This reflects a philosophy of life that I need to do better at. It talks about accepting people and life for who they are and enjoying the moment you're in and not worrying about the future.
20.6 Knit Two by Kate Jacobs
This is the second book related to the ladies of the Friday Night Knitting Club. It is about the power of friendship and getting back to the important things in life and I highly recommend these books.
20.7: Sepulchre by Kate Moss
Book related to music and I really need to clean out my CDs!
20.9 The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann D. Wyss
This took me forever!
25.4 Serendipity: A Novel by Louise Shaffer Ozma of Oz by L Frank Baum
My middle name is Louise and the more I read the Oz books, the more I love them!
25.7: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
30.5: A. Last Night at the Lobster by Steward O'Nan and B. Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill.
Stewart O'Nan cowrote Faithful: Two Diehard Boston Red Sox Fans Chronicle the Historic 2004 Season with Stephen King. King is Joe Hill's father.
30.6: The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fford and The Tragedy of King Richard III by Shakespeare
Loved my first Thursday Next book. Returning to Shakespeare not so fun.

15.8 Michelangelo's Birthday
A. Favorite Artist
*The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver - READ 5.29.10
My Rating:★★★★★
B. I don't necessarily have a favorite artist or work of art, but I do like murals. I love how an artist tells a story or relates history on a mural. Diego Rivera, who was a prominent figure in The Lacuna, painted many murals in Mexico that depicted it's origin, struggles and revolution. His murals inspired passion and controversy, which I think makes for good art.

I don't remember if I've claimed a big book ticket, but this qualifies for one at 508 pp.

Task 20.8 (Magical Birthday). Thanks to this task, I finally finished The Deptford Trilogy by reading World of Wonders (352 pgs). I also read The Magician of Samarkand (216 pgs).
The Magician of Samarkand was an interesting tale but a bit too young. I would have really enjoyed this story of good vs. evil earlier in life.
In World of Wonders, Paul Dempster's account of his life is interesting but, at times, rather long-winded.
This final book of the Deptford Trilogy did tie up all loose ends but was the most philosophical of the three books. At times, tediously so.
Of all of Davies' characters in this trilogy, Paul rose from the deepest depths to the highest pinnacles. A good story of triumph and acceptance, through diversity.
I enjoyed the entire trilogy and found that the last two books added depth to the characters and their intertwining lives.

A. Read a book written by an author that shares your first, middle, OR last name. (My name is Diane Joyce Phillips. One of the many Jeeves stories, in this one Jeeves has >gasp< resigned from Mr. Wooster's service, due to an irreconcilable difference over a musical instrument. Both Jeeves and Mr. Wooster end up on a friend's estate where many intrigues, escapes, and romantic entanglements occur, but all are ingeniously resolved by Jeeves. A very amusing read, while not laugh-out-loud funny, it did have me chuckling quite often.
15.3 - At Least Once In A Lifetime: Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky
I am undecided if the book should be on the list. It was an extremely difficult read and I suspect a more engaging work might get the point across better. I suspect it being so very far down the list of books everyone should read once is appropriate. I do think 1984 deserves a spot near the top of the list.

15.3 - At Least Once In A Lifetime
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
I don't actually think this book should be on the list. It's an enjoyable read but there's nothing in particular about the book that makes it worthy of being something that everyone should read. For me, I think Einstein's Dreams should be at the top of the list because it has the potential to change the way you see physics, life, and the way universes could work.
