I just read Lover Beware and I loved it. I was afraid it might just be smutty because of the title, but the stories were all really entertaining. I originally got it to read the prequel to World of the Lupi, but apparently I didn't need to read it since she reworked it all in book 1.

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments So I read Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers , Perfect Chemistry (Perfect Chemistry Trilogy, #1) by Simone Elkeles , and Leaving Paradise (Leaving Paradise, #1) by Simone Elkeles over the weekend (and yesterday too). They were all amazing reads! Perfect Chemistry was my favorite out of them all, and even though I have read another book and am halfway through another (and a bit into another, lol) I still can't get it out of my head!

I just read Captivate (Need, #2) by Carrie Jones and I enjoyed it. I liked it a little better than book 1, but I'm not obsessive about it.

I cannot seem to motivate myself to get started on book 4 of Percy. Blah.

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments I finished Wicked Enchantment (Dark Magick, #1) by Anya Bast . I really liked the book in some points, but yet there were other things that seemed forced to me. I'm somewhere in the middle on it.

message 107: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments Carrie ~ Did you read Hot for the Holidays? There is a short story in there that is set in this world, almost a prequel. If you didn't read it it shouldn't have a bearing on this story, but it might help with the things that seemed forced.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments Some that I have finished this week are
Blonde With a Wand (Babes-on-Brooms, #1) by Vicki Lewis Thompson Chick with a Charm (Babes-on-Brooms, #2) by Vicki Lewis Thompson Sex and the Psychic Witch (Triplet Witch Trilogy, #1) by Annette Blair , theses were cute, on the lighter side of PNR

Is that the one in the Hellhounds book? I actually read 1 1/2 stories in it and put it down. I will check. I'll post why I felt that way. First, I'm not big on smut. I love series like the Night Huntress, but they seem to have one good sex scene and then the others fade to black. This one I felt that the sex had as big of a part as the plot and it got redundant. The other thing that bothered me was parts of the romance itself.

***SPOILER***
I get that Aislinn didn't feel that Gabriel actually loved her for most of the book. But twards the end, where she became the Shadow Queen I felt like I was reading a fan fic. He tells her he loves her (which he should have done way sooner) and does her up against the wall and bang, everything is perfect (relationship wise). I also thought it should have ended there. It felt like the book had two endings.

***END SPOILER***

Besides those gripes, I really liked the rest of the book. The whole idea of their world was interesting and I liked the characers.

message 110: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments Well if the sex scenes are the reason of the book, then I would probably skip the book with short stories. This author seems to be fairly heavy on the sex scenes.

I just finished Eragon (Inheritance, #1) by Christopher Paolini . It was okay. I was shocked to find out it was written by a teenager.

I just finished Dead Witch Walking (Rachel Morgan/The Hollows, #1) by Kim Harrison . it was okay. It would have been better if I didn't go into it with expectations.

I have heard a lot of people are turned off by this series by this book or just think it is ok. When I first found it I read the first 5 at once, so it is hard for me to judge it by itself. I do know that with this series I can't read at my normal really fast speed, there is just so much going on I have to slow down. Plus with this series once you have read them if you go back and re-read you realize just how much stuff you are being told that maybe won't have a pay off for a few books.

I would say keep reading, they get better. It is kind of like the Kitty books, the first one is so much about setting up the world, but they get better.

I just had people tell me how GREAT Harrison was so I think that made me feel let down a bit.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments I know we have been talking about Need here, a lot of us have read it and the take on it has been both ways. I got around to reading it today and liked it. I loved Zara and the whole family connections. I look forward to the next one.

I also read Wings and liked that one as well.

I've been wondering about Wings. I keep passing it up for some reason.

Carrie you described it well. It really has an innocence to it.

I just finished Never Let Me Go and this is one of the most depressing book I have ever read. It almost makes you want to off yourself after reading it.

Succubus Shadows (Georgina Kincaid, #5) by Richelle Mead
I love Georgie, but man she gets herself into trouble. =) She causes some unrepairable drama in this one.

I have one question: Why isn't this book longer???? (whimper and whine)

Hmmmm, unrepairable drama, eh? I probably won't continue with the series then. She really drove me nuts in the first book, so I was hoping she'd smarten the hell up in the next ones. I really liked Carter though (I know he had a small part, but I felt drawn to him more than any of the other characters).

message 126: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
It might be fixable. But I'm not sure how. If you don't like book 1 I doubt you'd like the rest of the series. The damage issue is more of one of those things you don't plan and everyone's pissed at you later kind of things. I don't know how to phrase that any better without giving plot away.

message 127: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments I just finished Elphame's Choice (Partholon, #2) by P.C. Cast , which is the #2 to the one we read this month. I really liked it, but it is a teen book. There should be no way that it should be a teen book, the sex scenes were fairly explict, more than what I expect from a YA book.

message 128: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
Cast, having worked with teenagers, puts in what teens actually know about as opposed to what we think they should know. Even good teenagers that are capable of self-control hear more smut in the halls than you'd imagine. I can't believe what I hear in class. I know who has crabs, had an abortion, can last the longest... and that's when they're actually on task and busy. I can't imagine what I'd hear if they had down time. Some days I wish for ear plugs for me or duck tape for them.

message 129: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments Surprisingly there are a lot of YA books that have tons of swearing, sexual acts, and drugs mentioned. I don't mind it for some of the older teens, but I have a lot of nieces (and one nephew) that read well past their age range for books, so they read a lot of YA/Teen (their ages are 10-14). I can never, ever give them a book without reading it first. I just started Never After and was considering it for my nephew who is 11. Right off the bat they use the f word repeatedly and things like Jesus F***ing Christ. I just wish some of the YA books could be toned down a bit. It seems that the tween age is stuck right in the middle where everything is either too young or too mature for them.

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
It's hard to find books for the kids between the childrens' section and the YA section. P.C. is definitely writing for high schoolers. (And all of us adults that read YA.)

message 131: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
Oh, and Darcy... I think, but am not sure, that you're supposed to read all the divine books together and the YA together. I'm not sure if Elphame's really book 2. I guess you'll have to let us know. But all the Divine books deal with the same characters. She doesn't really specify on her site the reading order.

message 132: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments I did read the second divine book and it was good. I am waiting for the 3rd, but had Elphame's so read that one. I am waiting for the one after that one now too. It works because the second divine book is just months after the first, while the YA book is 125 years later, so it doesn't matter.

Good to know.
I just read The Good, the Bad, and the Undead (Rachel Morgan/The Hollows, #2) by Kim Harrison and it was much more interesting then book 1.

message 134: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I finally finished Archer's Goon and I finished listening to Book of a Thousand Days, Dial-a-Ghost, The Awakening, and Sandry's Book.

I liked them all in varying degrees. The Summoning made me angry because of the extreme cliff hanger ending, but I forgave The Summoning after listening The Awakening which I liked a lot. Still a cliff hanger, but I was expecting it so no biggy.

I'll read more of the Circle of Magic series after listening to Sandry's Book. The book was well written.

I'm becoming a fan of Shannon Hale. The book of a Thousand Days was interesting and was definately based on a fairy tale.

Silver Borne (Mercedes Thompson, #5) by Patricia Briggs

I enjoyed it. It affected me a little differently than the previous books because it had a more serious issue than just the attempt to get out of whatever trouble Mercy finds herself in. I was able to read it slowly rather than rush through it. (I'll elaborate more as to why once more of you have read it.)
I'm not sure if it's my favorite Mercy, but I was glad to be back in her world. Although, it's missing one of my favorite characters.

Haha. "...in a way." I like that.

I thought it got a little better toward the end, but it wasn't one of her better books.

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments I finished Numbers Numbers (Numbers, #1) by Rachel Ward .

I really liked this book, even though it made me cry my eyes out at the end, and I would recommend reading it if you are looking for a heavy read that really leaves you thinking. DO NOT READ THIS BOOK IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE USE OF SWEAR WORDS IN BOOKS, AND YOU DO NOT LIKE IT WHEN THERE IS UNDERAGE SEX, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.

I almost picked up Blonde With a Wand today, but the book makes it impossible to tell which book comes first. I wish all books were as good at listing their series in order. I've found a few series I'd like to try only to realize I can't tell which one is book 1.

message 144: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments I have the same problem sometimes! I usually google the series or goodreads it to see which book comes first.

message 145: by Angela (new)

Angela B I just finished Dead Until Dark I actually enjoyed this book. It was a little slow in certain spots but nothing that really got in the way. I was skeptical of these books until I read it, to be honest I would say it was mostly judging a book by the cover, the original covers in my opinion are goofy and childish and didn't draw my interest at all. But anyways I would give this book 3.5 stars and will read more in the series later

Heather, Blonde with a Wand is the first one, then Chick with a charm. I did discover that there is a trilogy before that has characters that pop in but I hadn't read them and it doesn't matter. I think if you would have read those ones it would have just been nice to see characters you know again.

Angela - I found the covers to be turn offs too. If it hadn't been for multiple people pushing me into the books I don't think I would have looked at them twice.

Magic Bites, Halfway to the Grave and Succubus Blues were all books besides the Harris that I almost didn't read because of the covers. With Kate Daniels and Night Huntress everyone recommended them so much I picked them up. I didn't want to, but I gave the Georgina Kincaid a chance after having read Mead's Vamp Academy.

They're all in my top 10 series now. Night Huntress being my favorite at the moment.
