I'm in but I want a thread just for our November 13th goal...but I'm going to need more then that one day to finish it :)

Angela B I finished You Are So Undead to Me (Megan Berry, #1) by Stacey Jay and I actually thought it was really cute even though it was a little corny but I wasn't bored by the story or anything which is good. I was pleasantly surpised by this one

I'm making in at EVENT Angela. =) And we'll have our own thread. You just have to start it on that day.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments I know of a good challenge idea (maybe for next year).

Each person that is going to participate gets to recommend one book to go on a master list (either a standalone or book 1 of a series). It has to be a book or series that the person has read and would like others to try (we all keep prodding each other to try our own personal favorites, so it made me think of this).

Every person participating picks a few books from the "master" list to read. I'd guess that since a few of our members (like Heather and Darcy) have read most everything out there, we'd have to make sure the list has enough choices to go around, so I'd say that the list would have to be at least triple the size as the challenge amount. For example : If we have 12 people participating it would equal a 12 book list, which means that the challenge would be to pick 4 books from the list.

If the pickings are really slim for the more seasoned readers, they could always choose one of the recommended series and go for a later book in the series (i.e. Heather has read most of the list, but sees Dark Hunter number 1 up there. She makes that her choice, but reads book number 12 because she's further along in the series).

Does that make any sense? If not, I can try to find another way to explain it.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 2770 comments I really like that idea Stacia.

message 606: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) | 1746 comments That's a good idea Stacia. So kind of like the birthday challenge, but we would each pick the ones we want people to choose from, not our whole shelf. And we would be picking from multiple people instead of one persons shelf. Right?

message 607: by Angela (new)

Angela B I also like that idea Stacia :)

message 608: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Oct 01, 2010 12:00PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments Yeah. It would be sort of like the event we're doing in November, except on a slightly bigger scale. People would nominate a book that they really feel people should try. Maybe it's one of your all-time favorites (like WoT), or maybe it's a book that just gets overlooked a lot, or is lesser known and deserves some attention. The only catch would be that the nom would have to be a book that you have read and enjoyed (preferably rated at least 4 stars by you).

I like the idea of making the choices based on a percentage of the total amount of books on the list, so we'd each get to at least choose a few books to read.

We're doing something similar in my YA Sci-Fi & Fantasy group, except that instead of basing the books on the number of participants, everyone puts up a list of 5 books and each person has to pick one (but we're only picking 1 book total from all of the books that everyone has listed, which is a much smaller scale).

message 609: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Oct 01, 2010 11:11AM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments Although, now that you mention it, this might be too similar to the birthday challenge, you think?

If so, then scratch that idea altogether. :p

haha. It's a good idea. I'll try and see if if i can make it different from the b-day challenge.

Torment (Fallen, #2) by Lauren Kate Bayou Moon (The Edge, #2) by Ilona Andrews - both 4 stars. I'm reading Venom (Elemental Assassin, #3) by Jennifer Estep now. I can't wait!

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Ooo, I love this cover. The last one I finished was The Outlaw Demon Wails, it wasn't as good as the others. I'm a bit nervous to read White Witch, Black Curse.

message 613: by Sooz (new)

Sooz Malinoski (soozee) | 55 comments I finished and OMG the ending is a doozy! I am glad I finished it, but wasn't sure about 1/2 way through - I didn't understand why the plot was so off... However MJ wrapped it up awesome!

message 614: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I finished listening to The Red Pyramid. I enjoyed the story. There was a lot of Eygptian deities and the like. This could be a stand alone book, but I think it's going to be a series. I don't know if I would have enjoyed the book as much if I were reading it. Though Sadie's attitude was a bit too much in audio.

I know what you mean, I was prepared to give up this series, but now I have to know more.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 827 comments Hunger (Horsemen of the Apocalypse, #1) by Jackie Morse Kessler

Thought I had mentioned it already in this group (everything starts to blend together after a while).

It's about an anorexic girl that is called to take up the mantle of Famine as one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse.

I liked it, but the author clearly wanted to focus more on the anorexia than the horsemen thing, which would have made more sense if the book was titled something about having to do with eating disorders. The character of Death was my favorite thing about the book (he was sexy, go figure), and I really hope he takes a prominent role in future books.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments Perfect Chemistry (Perfect Chemistry, #1) by Simone Elkeles A friend made me buy this yesterday. It's not anything I would normaley read. (First time I asked Borders about the return policy.) Let's just say it blew my mind socks and I can't Wait for the next book to come out in paperback!!

message 618: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I finished I Shall Wear Midnight and truly enjoyed the book. Tiffany Aching is a fine witch. Someone not born to be a witch, but through hard work and dedication became one of the best. Or at least she will be one of the best as she ages and gathers more knowldge.

I LOVE this book. If you liked it you need to read
Leaving Paradise (Leaving Paradise, #1) by Simone Elkeles .

message 621: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
Carries right. I liked Leaving Paradise better than Perfect Chemistry.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 2445 comments While I'm waiting for the paperback release of Rules of Attraction I plan on jumping on her other books. I'd love to find some other books like it, but I'm still a little nervous about leaving my genre comfort zone.

message 623: by [deleted user] (new)

Shera I'm totally fangirling right now, because you mentoined Simone Elkeles. Oh man, I love her books so much! You will not be dissapointed by Rules of Attraction because it's amazing.
Personally I liked the Perfect Chemistry series a little bit more, because Leaving Paradise ends with such a cliffhanger that didn't make sense to me (though it redeems itself in the second book with a perfect ending/perfect plot/perfect everything). Ugh, now I feel like re-reading them all over again :)

Grave Witch (Alex Craft, #1) by Kalayna Price It doesn't add anything new to the urbanfantasy genre, but I still really enjoyed it. Also the love interests are hot hot hot.

message 624: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 89 comments yeah what Zuleika said...
I just read Grave Witch (Alex Craft, #1) by Kalayna Price . I really liked it. Kind of Anita Blake without all the porn but it's not completely flat- there is some ooh la la

I really want to read this one! >_<

message 626: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) I'm excited to read Grave Witch (Alex Craft, #1) by Kalayna Price too. Soon...

Finally got around to reading Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) by J.R. Ward . It took awhile to get into the story, but I was liking it by the end. Is it sad I liked the human (Butch) more than any of the vampires so far?

Spy Glass (Glass, #3) by Maria V. Snyder
I love Snyder. I haven't read a bad book by her yet.

Jessica B | 292 comments I read the first two books from the Aisling Grey series.
You Slay Me (Aisling Grey Guardian, #1) by Katie MacAlister Fire Me Up (Aisling Grey Guardian, #2) by Katie MacAlister

I was pleasantly surprised by these two books. I had read mixed reviews and wasn't sure I would enjoy them. Usually those two ingredients end up making for a great book and they did. I loved them and have already plowed through half of book 3 - Light My Fire (Aisling Grey Guardian, #3) by Katie MacAlister

The mixed reviews kept me away from this series too. Sadly, I didn't like them. Are they better after book 1?

I became more interest in them as they went on because I had invested time with the characters. I don't think they really got any better though. I gave them all 2 stars. They were cute and had potential to have decent stories. They were just too campy for me. However, they did make me laugh at times.

That was the untimely demise of them for me. They could not make me laugh.

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 5931 comments Mod
She tries too hard to force the laugh sometimes. I think the plot idea has great potential though. It's different and interesting. It just wasn't for me. Although, I did get more interested in the Silver Dragon series. I'm even hoping to one day try out the light dragon series.
I see some potential with the ideas so I'll keep trying until I either I see her grow as a writer or until somehow manage to forget the series exists. I have a hard time saying no once I've invested time into something.

Holy photoshop! The first picture is okay, but after that it just gets worse and worse.

---

Just finished The Iron Duke and I loved it. Romance was A+ (really steamy scenes), but the best thing for me was the worldbuilding. It takes place in this post-dystopian steampunk world and it has pirates and seamonsters and zombies. It's so awesome

message 645: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments I finished Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro last week.

This is my review:

"I don't have really strong feelings about this book. I did like it, but I didn't find it that amazing; I wouldn't spend money on it.

Unlike many of my classmates, I did like the ending and I didn't think that this was some "stupid book." I feel like the events in this book can easily become reality and the way that the people around the world viewed clones is very believable. If clones were real, I think that's exactly how people would think of them; they wouldn't try to identify with them. Instead, they'd just not think about how clones are basically REAL people.

Also unlike many others, I didn't find this book sad. . .I didn't tear up at all and didn't even get sad. I thought the ending was very appropriate for the novel."

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments I recently reread Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater .

I loved it even more the second time around. I even bumped the rating up a star. When I first read the book I think I was to eager to finish it to really pay attention to how beautifully Maggie writes. The book is like some sort of cross between a poem/song/book. It's great. :) I'm really glad I reread this because now I love the book even more then I originally did.

Yes, I already recommended this book, but...
I am really curious to see how you'd like The Hourglass Door (Hourglass Door Trilogy, #1) by Lisa Mangum .
After I was done reading it, I felt like the situation in which the male lead was having trouble controlling when he had to time travel, had sort of a parallel to what Sam was going through in Shiver. The story itself isn't the same (boy from Davinci era Italy travels to the present), but it's a fun read and has a cute love story.

message 650: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 950 comments And I know I already said this, but I really am going to read that! LOL. I just have way to many books! & with school I've only been reading like one book a month. =O! I might read that once the third and final book comes out in summer 2011. For some reason I can't see myself buying those books. . .I feel like the overall rating on goodreads is clouding my judgement. I might read the first one and then see if they are buy-worthy . . .do you think they are?
