Ellie (xweepingangel) | 4 comments hello! My name is Ellie, and I have only just started here on goodreads (though I wish I'd found the site earlier - I love it!) Tess Gerritsen is my favourite author; I discovered her novels when Keeping the Dead (The Keepsake) came out in the UK, and I have loved all of the novels that I've read by her ever since (and I've read a lot of them!) My favourite novel by Gerritsen is Vanish. :)

Kim (grandpasrugrat) | 5 comments Just joining this group. I started reading the Rizzoli and Isles series at the beginning of the month. I started with the first one, The Surgeon, and I'm now on the 8th one, Ice Cold. I like the show, but I must admit, I rather like the characters and their lives/interactions better in the books. :)

J.A. Schneider (jaschneider) | 13 comments I think the R&I show is...awful. ("Do I look fat in this flak jacket?") Sheesh! Last night they animatedly discussed manicures and cuticles...in the morgue.

The books are better. I do love medical thrillers (just wrote one myself) but prefer less verbiage & faster pace. In "The Surgeon," the author's making the point that the female surgeon is a...surgeon. And proceeds to give pages & pages of that particular surgery that sound out of a textbook. Ok, we get it, she's a surgeon, move on please?

I have never watched the show for that reason. I've seen several posters, and to me it looks like a cheap attempt at making the books somehow more sexual (Maura Isles posing on a scalpel? really?) I think it would ruin the characters for me, so I've always steered clear.

I've been reading her books for a long time and have been invested in the Jane Rizzoli & Maura Isles characters since that series started. I tried to watch the show and it wasn't enjoyable for me because they aren't my characters. I could deal with minor changes, but the show writers have changed the very essence of the characters.

J.A. Schneider (jaschneider) | 13 comments Here's the mystery: Who are these women who describe themselves as R&I "addicts?" Rizzoli arrives at a crime scene commenting on Isles *shoes*?? ("Love 'em, they new?") And their hair is so perfectly professionally set in every scene. It's all so phony.

I'm very glad that you have confirmed my suspicions because I was considering watching the series just to see if it was really like that, or I was being a little too judgmental. From what you - and others - have said I don't think I'll even bother.

Kim (grandpasrugrat) | 5 comments The books are definitely better than the show, but I must admit that I usually "hear" Angie and Sasha's voices when they are conversing in the books....

If you like the show then I suppose it's not much to sacrifice but I think that I would dislike it if their pictures and voices took over the beauty of Gerritsen's words.

message 211: by Kim (new)

Kim (grandpasrugrat) | 5 comments Ellie, I only watch the show on occassion and that's because I've always liked Angie Harmon, but since I started reading the series at the beginning of this month, I haven't watched it at all because of how different the books and show are. The dynamics of the book characters is much better than the show's character dynamics. The story lines on the show are good and they do bring in some aspects of the books but again, the books are much better!

message 213: by Clarina (new)

Clarina | 10 comments Hi everyone!
Well, I've joined this group for a while now, but it's actually the first time I'm introducing myself here. I'm Clarina, and I've been reading Tess Gerritsen's books for a few years now, but I've only noticed and joined this group a few months ago. It's so nice to have place where Tess Gerritsen fans can chat together (although I haven't really done that much yet). Also, THE ACTUAL TESS GERRITSEN IS HERE!!!
OK, let me calm down...Alright. Before, my favourite book out of the ones I'd read so far was "Harvest". Then, not long ago, I read "The Killing Place/Ice Cold" and that became my favourite book. My favourite book now is "The Bone Garden", which I have just finished reading a few minutes ago. I really like how it travels between the past and the present and I really like how the past is described. I've still got "Bloodstream", "Gravity", and "Girl Missing" to read, and I also can't wait to read the new book! I might also read Tess's romance novels, although I haven't read many romance novels before.

Welcome to the group Clarina! I agree The Bone Garden is very good, but it's hard to pick a favorite so I chose my favorite Rizzoli & Isles novel - The Keepsake and my favorite Stand Alone - The Bone Garden. I'm not that interested in the Romantic Suspense novels, but always willing to give a Tess Gerritsen novel a try :-) We'll have to see if we can convince Tess to stop back in now that we have more members - I think she keeps forgetting her passwords and that's part of why she hasn't been back.

Dustin, the end part of your comment really fits in with your profile picture! I think the picture is very cute!

Clarina | 10 comments Turns out there's still quite a number of Tess Gerritsen novels for me to read, not just the four I mentioned.

well we choose a group read every other month so you'll have plenty of opportunities to read 'em all :-) btw, are you counting the Romantic Suspense novels?

Yeah, I don't blame you :-) Stick with the stand-alone medical thrillers and the Rizzoli & Isles series - you won't be disappointed with them, but can't say the same about the Romantic Suspense books. Girl Missing though, is one you might want to try it was a bridge from the Romantic Suspense to her Medical Thrillers and I thought it was pretty good - lighter on the Romance aspect that the earlier ones :-)

Oh, you've just reminded me to reserve that book at the library! I was already planning to read it next, but the libraries that have this book are really far away.

Brenda The Surgeon is the first of the Rizzoli and Isles series Laura:)

message 225: by Laura (new)

Marit | 1 comments Hi Everyone. My name is Marit and I just finished "the Surgeon" yesterday and started "The Apprentice" today. Before I make any wrong, comments I need to put out there, that I am reading the books in german, but that is only so, cause that's all my mother had in her bookshelf. I actually only started reading "the Surgeon", because I finished all my other books and needed a new one, but I must say I am very happy that I read it, because it is by far one of the best crime books I have read in a while. I would have only liked it, if there would have been a bit more focus on Jane in the story line itself, as I feel she was a bit lost in the plot. That however I think is the only real negative aspect I have to it. I know however that once I finished the first four books from the series, I will move to the english versions, because somehow I am loosing some of the flare in the German translation. This however sadly happens to most translations into the german language. I am so eager now to finish the second book. :)

message 233: by Whit (new)

Whit | 8 comments Hello all! My name is Whitney I live in Oklahoma and I love the Rizzoli and Isles books/TV show. I got hooked on the show because it portrayed a strong female in law enforcement and that is the career I am going into. After the season 2 finale I couldn't wait until June to have my R&I fix so I decided to give the books a try. I am very happy I did! Not only do I love the books but reading them has reintroduced me to the world of reading and for that I am so thankful! I'm excited to be able to speak with like minded people about the books! I am currently on The Keepsake. My favorites so far have been The Sinner, Body Double, and Vanish I think mainly because I feel like there is a lot more character development in them. Well hope to speak soon!

Sounds like you're on a roll. By now you may already be reading The Silent Girl :-)

Looks like a great group. I've read Tess for years. I just finished writing my own medical thriller and it's being considered at the Jane Rotrosen Agency. Starting the sequel now and in the process of writing a third.
Tess is my favorite author in this genre.
I have a journalism degree and write news features.
I recently moved to MS, and have two daughters in college.
