Medea nodded, but felt the need to look down at her Potions book again. "Yup. Maybe it's sad that first-years have to amuse themselves with the Owlery and the library rather than, say, Hogsmeade, but I don't particularly mind. I like the library - and I'm betting I'll like the Owlery too." She looked up and smiled.

Caleb heard her mutter something but didn't catch what. He tilted his head to one side. "Okay. Nix on the reading time practice then. What do you suggest?"

Avery glanced at her Potions book absently. "Whatever happens it'll be interesting. More interesting than this."

"Nearly anything's more interesting than school. Although that may not be true at Hogwarts," Medea added thoughtfully. "So far it's much better than Muggle school classes."

Caleb's eyes narrowed slightly but he just nodded thoughtfully. "Well, that sounds like it could be a plan," he said slowly, mentally trying to figure out what he'd done wrong.

Avery grinned. "Very much so." He leaned back in his chair. "Except maybe the woodshop class I took in the States. That was cool."

"Woodshop?" Medea asked slowly, like the word was odd. "What's that?"

Avery let out a breath. "Hm." He thought about how to describe it. "Well... You learn how to make stuff out of wood. Sort of like carpentry, but simpler."

"Was woodshop your favorite?" Medea asked curiously. "Did you ever make anything cool?"

"I made a birdhouse," Avery said with a slight blush. "It didn't go so well. Woodshop was fun," he said thoughtfully. "Hm. My favorite was probably that and the communications class. We did photography and video presentations."

Medea smothered a smile. "Birdhouses are nice. Hm, but I've never really taken Muggle photography before. How's that?"

Avery shrugged. "Obviously different from magical photography. The pictures don't move, but the really skilled photographers can make it looks like they do. It really is cool."

"Huh. I've never really thought about it," Medea remarked. She tilted her head and stared at her ring. "But maybe, it would be just as pretty to have a frozen image as a moving one."

Avery watched her expression as she stared at her hand, wondering what she was thinking. "It is," he said. "We have both in our house..." he let out a soft sigh. "They're both cool."

Medea looked up, but twisted her ring as she spoke. "We don't have any Muggle photos," she said evenly. "Or many wizard ones, actually. We were always having to take them down, when my mother's Muggle relatives came to visit, and, well..." She sighed.

Avery nodded slowly. "Yeah." He echoed her sigh gently. "That can make things difficult."

"Mm-hmm," Medea said. "I guess it's nice not to have to do that anymore." She spoke very quietly. Although I did like having all our pictures. But I suppose they weren't necessary anyway. She cleared her throat. "Are both of your parents magical?" She kept her voice carefully polite - some people were very touchy about this.

Medea bit her lip. "Well..." She glanced around the room and lowered her voice. "Sometimes she gets a little upset. They've - they used to have arguements, because my mum feels a little like the marriage is unequal, and she wishes that she could be magical. But ever since - well, they don't argue about petty things anymore. My mum us fine with it now."

"Yeah. He was in Gryffindor. But Theseus was in Ravenclaw too. Did your - mom - go to Hogwarts?" Medea wished she hadn't asked the question, though she was curious.

Avery grinned, this time with only the tiniest hint of sadness at the shared memories. "Yeah. She was a Gryffindor, too. I wonder if they knew each other?" He let out a breath. "If my dad had been a wizard and come here, he would've been a Ravenclaw. He's brilliant. They both are."

"They work with computers, don't they? Your parents? don't know much about computers, but they must be really smart." Medea smiled. "That'd be cool if our parents had known each other."

Avery nodded. "They program them, fix them, stuff like that." His eyes lightened. "You could ask your dad. It'd be like generation two friendship if they had."
