"Oh, cool! I probably should have sent a letter home my first day," Medea said with a frown. "Oh well. I'll have to tomorrow anyway." She spoke without thinking, and her face drained of color. Yes, she would definitely have to write home tomorrow, and she dreaded it. "So is the Owlery cool?" she asked quickly, not looking at him.

"Yes," Caleb said, giving her a brief puzzled look at her sudden reticence. "There are owls everywhere, obviously, and it's really quiet and nice."

Avery sort of changed how he was walking so that he was next to Medea. "What's wrong?" He asked quietly.

Caleb watched Avery silently, staying a little way away from them. This was the Avery he knew, happy and caring and funny. Not hateful or angry. But that was all he'd seen lately.

Medea shook her head. "Nothing," she said tightly, and her voice cracked. She met his eyes reluctantly. "Tomorrow... tomorrow is Ariadne's birthday, that's all," she whispered.

Avery set a hand on her arm briefly and whispered, "I'm sorry."

Caleb didn't hear what Medea said, except for the word "Ariadne" and that was all he needed to know something was wrong.

Medea closed her eyes tightly at his touch and nodded. "Thanks. But it's alright, I'm used to this after so many years." Her smile was more like a grimace.

Avery removed his hand and nodded. "Okay," he said slowly.

"We turn right here," Caleb said. "And we have to go outside to get there."

Medea grinned at Caleb, glad of the distraction. "Great! At least it's nice weather today." She spoke in her normal voice.

Caleb grinned back. "Mhm." He turned and continued toward some doors.

Before Caleb could open the doors, they opened from the other side. Iris appeared, glancing over her shoulder, out of breath. She turned and saw the trio standing there. "Oh. Hi guys," she said, smiling.

Caleb jumped slightly, surprised. "Hi, Iris," he said with a grin.

"Well, it got very boring there, seeing as how we have been waiting for the professor to come forever. It's actually quite annoying I feel like I spend half my life waiting for late professors. But, never mind them. I have better things to do. Like explore the castle!" Iris exclaimed brightly, a glimmer making her purple eyes pop brilliantly.

Caleb laughed. "Well, we're heading to the owlery. Would you like to come?" He glanced at Medea to see if it was okay.

"Oh, sure," Iris sounded enthusiastic, but she'd noticed Caleb's eyes dart to Medea. She hoped it was okay with her... she seemed to be somewhat subdued.

Medea grinned. "Hey Iris!" She was glad the girl had showed up - now she wouldn't have to try to talk to both twins at once, and besides, she needed more friends.
