Avery turned his face toward the wall briefly, his eyes filling with something that was hard and cold. He blinked it away, looking back at Medea. "I can't," he said, frowning, though he was less certain that he had been.

"Can't you?" Medea asked shortly. Her irritation was bubbling over and directing itself at Avery. "You want your relationship back, don't you? Then actually make an effort."

Avery's eyes widened. Medea had never been angry like this at him before. "He doesn't want to talk to me," Avery replied in the same short tone. ((LIAR!))

"How do you know he doesn't want to talk? You haven't tried talking to him," Medea went on more mildly.

Avery cast his eyes to the floor. "I just do," he said more quietly, then the anger returned to his voice. "There's no way I can every forgive him after everything he's done. Never." He spun on his heel and left before another word could be spoken.

Medea stared after him in dismay. "Avery!" she called, but she didn't think he heard. "Nice going. Now you've ruined the only friendship you had," she muttered to herself. She swallowed, the tears starting to return to her eyes. But she held them back. She was use to isolation, and she should be able to bear it. Should be able to, at least - but it didn't seem likely. She decided to apologize later - maybe they could go back to normal - and headed for the library.

Caleb pulled a book down from the shelf. The Complete History of Hogwarts by Hermione Granger. He allowed himself a smile. He'd read it before. It was one of his favorites. Carrying it back to the table and sitting down, Caleb found he couldn't focus on the familiar words. He rested his head in his hands and sighed.

Medea slipped into the library and gave a little sigh. It was nice to have some quiet, and the library was silent and calm. She took her book out of her bag and turned it in, then walked slowly through the shelves to find a book. Then she stopped. "Avery?" He was sitting at a table. She felt a moment of panic, but then disspelled it. Better to apologize now rather than later. But then she looked at him more closely. His eyes weren't as green, and there was just something a little off. "Oh, sorry. You must be Caleb," she whispered.

Caleb jumped and looked up, his gray-green eyes settling on Medea. He'd seen her before. With Avery? That would explain why she'd mistaken him for Avery. The thought of his twin filled him with the usual pain and regret. He nodded slowly. "Yes. You're Medea, right?"

"Yes, Medea Lillis, from Ravenclaw," she replied quietly. "Sorry to interrupt you. I thought you were Ave- your brother." She didn't feel much like saying his name. She still felt too bad.

Caleb closed the book and gave Medea a soft smile. "Don't worry about it. No, I'm definitely not," he said, shaking his head. "Nice to meet you, though, Medea."

"You too, Caleb." She tried to smile back. "What are you reading?" she asked curiously.

Medea nodded. "I've read part of it. It is good - especially the chapter on house-elves. That's appalling." She laughed. "Maybe a bit opinionated, though."

Caleb couldn't help but laugh with her. He nodded. "I agree. She was certainly a brilliant witch," he said. "This is the most detailed and complete book about Hogwart's history." He reddened slightly. "Though I guess that was obvious from the title."

Medea smiled. "Well, most history books claim to be complete. But Mrs. Granger was really smart. You hear stories about her and Harry Potter and the Weasleys all the time."

Caleb nodded. "Yeah, those were some of the few I heard." He felt curiosity prickle at him. "Can I ask you something?"

"What do you think of Avery?" Caleb asked quietly, afraid he would offend her by asking. He wanted to know how his twin acted around others. He was hungry for the companionship they used to have, but with Avery in his current state towards Caleb it would be impossible. He just wanted to know what Avery had been doing.

Medea hesitated. "I like him. He's nice and funny, and really smart. He's really the only friend I have here. Well, had." She bit her lip. "I think he's really a good person - and it's too bad that you two aren't so close anymore." Her voice was softer. She mentally kicked herself. She might have just offended not only Avery, but also his twin now.

(Haha, White Collar is amazing, Pudding. No contest. And personally... I like Caleb between the two (is it wrong to pick favorites?), but Avery just needs a little.... therapy. Obviously, Akrisios wins out hands down.))

Caleb clenched one fist under the table, his eyes finding the floor as he nodded mutely. "I..." He hesitated. "I know. I'm sorry, too. I'm glad he's found a friend in you, though, he needs them..." He gritted his teeth together, fighting his emotions.

Medea watched him in concern. His resemblence to Avery was so strong that she almost put a hand on his shoulder to comfort him. Instead, she simply nodded. "Yes. And I'm sorry."

I just wish he would talk to me, he almost said, but Caleb caught himself, barely. He swallowed and pressed his upset feelings into their usual back corner and looked up at Medea, genuine confusion in his eyes. "Why are you sorry?"

Medea bit her lip. "Well... I think that it's really sad that you two were so close, and now you're not. I wish - you shouldn't be mad at your family. You never know how long you'll have them around, right?" She tried to speak softly so she wouldn't offend him, and she gave a choked laugh at the end. "And Avery's my friend, and I don't like seeing him upset over this."

Caleb looked down at the heavy table and composed his words carefully before speaking, feeling a bit of anger mix with the sadness. "You don't know how many times I've tried," he said softly, his eyes meeting hers, pleading her to understand. "I try, and I talk to him, and he gets angry and cold and pushes me away. And I try again and the same thing happens, only it gets worse and harder every time. I want to make up and have everything go back to normal, but I just..." his voice caught and he exhaled. "I'm not mad at him. Just... worried, a little disappointed. And there's a lot going on that gets in the way."
