I don't really judge a book by its cover, but its always strange the way they market some books. Making them "less appealing" than necessary.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments Robin, I am happy that the author had enough pull to get that cover changed. Generally, it's my understanding that that's not the case. I could be wrong, though.

Tracy, I think that the bland HR covers are a reaction against the negative feedback about the sexy clinch covers that were common in the 80s. I like a bright, pretty cover, whether it's a clinch or not. I admit I'm not fond of the cover to Mine Till Midnight, because it seems wrong anatomically. Goofy chick that I am, I've tried to arrange myself in a similar pose as the cover, and it's not very feasible.

Robin | 361 comments Tracy, I agree with you. Sometimes I wonder who decides these things. I figure it has something to do with marketing and what they think people go for. I've heard pf people buying multiples of the same title because they for example got the U.S. version then saw the U.K. version and didn't realize it was the same book because the cover was so different and in some cases the title.

Danielle, I'd like to think that if I were an author and thought the cover chosen for my novel was totally off I'd be able to get it changed. The book I'm currently working on the cover hero has black hair and the book constantly mentions the heroes red hair. I guess not every author requests fixes or gets her wish if she does. It just proves you can't always go by the cover but its usually the first thing you see.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments I've talked to some authors, and they don't seem to have as much control as I would like. I know the independent authors do a lot of their own covers. But, the authors with the bigger pub houses don't have as much say, that I'm aware of. Now that might not always be the case.

I've heard that some editors do work with their authors. I want to say that is the case with the Demonica books by Larissa Ione. Don't quote me on that.

message 255: by Robin (new)

Robin | 361 comments Danielle, I wouldn't be surprised to hear authors say they don't have as much say as they'd like. In a perfect world the cover choosers would read a description of the characters and choose accordingly. Most of the covers are a good match for what's inside but it seems like when they're off they're way off. I would think that a lot of it has to do with the contract they have.

Trudy (trudyh) | 2 comments Hello all

1. I'm Trudy
2. Clearly my fave is Devil In Winter
3. It has to be Evie and St.Vincent
4. LK is an excellent author, and I've never been disappointed by one of her books.

message 257: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Certifiable St. Vinnie's Ninny (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments It's so annoying when the cover is way different than the book. I bet the authors really get annoyed about that.

message 258: by Anne OK (new)

Anne OK (anne-ok) | 99 comments Hi Trudy and Welcome! "Devil In Winter" seems to be a favorite of many.

message 259: by Robin (new)

Robin | 361 comments I really need to read The Wallflowers I started reading Lisa Kleypas with the Hathaway's and have read the Travis'. Devil in Winter is really starting to scream at me to be read but since its not the 1st in the series does it matter if I read them out of order?

message 260: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Certifiable St. Vinnie's Ninny (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments Robin, I read them in order, but I know that some readers did not and still enjoyed them. DIW is my favorite, so I was glad it was the second to last in the series that I read. They are all good books, though.

If you prefer historicals, there are so many great choices. I envy you. Her "Bow Street Runners" series is also a three-book series and superb. You'll meet the magnificent Nick Gentry and he'll steal your heart away!

Birdy | 23 comments Hi!
1. I'm Yen
2. I've only read book 1,2, and 3 of the Wallflowers series (so far) but I'm a devoted fan already, my favorite book is Devil in Winter.
3. Favorite Hero/heroine: St. Vincent (maybe favorite hero eva) & Evie .
4. I love Lisa Kleypas’s books because her writing is beautiful, captivating, witty, romantic/sexy without being cheesy.

Bekah (bekah317) | 2750 comments Hi Yen!! So Great to have you!!!

message 283: by Lady Grey (new)

Lady Grey (theladygrey) | 30 comments 1. Lady Grey
2. Favorite so far are the Hathaways series books. Can't wait for the next one! I have only been reading her books for a few months. So far I've read the 3 Hathaways books and I read the Wallflowers series backwards. I get all of my books from the library so it's not always easy to get them in the order I would like.
3. So far, Cam and Amelia from Mine Till Midnight. I have a weakness for gypsies. I also liked Marcus from It Happened One Autumn.
4. I like strong, take charge heroes who are smart, sincere and have a good sense of humor. I think most of her male characters have those qualities. I also like strong heroines like Lillian Bowman.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments Welcome Yen. We have some things in common. St. Vincent is my darling! Completely agree with you about LK's writing.

Welcome, Lady Grey. Glad to have you on board. Cam is so awesome. I love LK's heroes for the same reason.

Thanks Cyn! And thank you for posting the video (I felt a tad embarrassed watching it at work, but not enough not to watch it ;)

Have you read any other good gypsy books? Years ago I read one which I still re-read every so often. I think it's considered a romance but it's more like Outlander (a lot of history, some of it gory). I just love Gitan and Campion. You may like it: Fallen Angels

Cyn Mistress Kitty (beachlover) I can't think of some others right now but I just fell in love with Cam and Kev especially Cam. Sigh

message 292: by Tracyene (new)

Tracyene | 6 comments Hello--

I just joined but have been peeking over my friend Beth's shoulder for awhile--some of her replies and her "candy" photos show up in my feed. I've read 4 or 5 of the books--my favorite hero is Cam. I like that LK was willing to make him different--earrings, a ring on his thumb, (didn't he have tattoos, too?), more rough around the edges but still comfortable in his own skin. I really loved when she described him walking along a path through a field, and he brushed his hands along the top of the plants...that's almost a feminine thing to do--heroes are allowed to be sexually sensual but they're not usually just sensual.

message 293: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Certifiable St. Vinnie's Ninny (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments Hi, Tracyene. Welcome aboard. Cam is a very interesting hero. I firmly believe that LK is partial towards him. She really invests a lot into writing about him.

Cyn Mistress Kitty (beachlover) Welcome to our crazy group.
I LOVE Cam. He is such a tactile man and I love that about him. Oh and I love a man with a tattoo. Just one or two that's all.
