Hi Fran, I think chocolate labs are the prettiest color of the breed! I have a soon 11 month old curly coated retriever called Oscar. I adore him but he is quite a nahndful since he is huge and still very puppy in his behavior. I have pics of him as an 8 week pup and others as he grew on my profile page. There you can also see Skye, my curly that died last year. If you want to read a really good book about dogs, well then read Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog. Great book. I wrote a review there. Nice to have you here.

Thanks so much for being so welcoming, Lisa and Lee! I do hope I find some more time to spend hanging around here. :D*waves back* Thanks, Figment!

  Welcome fellow insomniac!
Hello, I'm Melanie and I love books! Some of my comfort reads are Little Women, Black Beauty, and any Jane Austen novel! I can reread these novels and not be bored.

Welcome to the group, Melanie! We're glad that you found us. Take a look around at the threads, polls, and bookshelves.
Hi Melanie! Another Austen fan -- Yay!

Hi everyone !! My name is Virginie, thanks for inviting me to join you here, this group sounds real good.....I love a good comfort read like a Mary Higgins Clark, a Victoria Holt or a Barbara Erskine novel, curled up in my sofa or in my bed , (or lying on a beach in summertime) ......with a warm cup of good tea and my cat purring beside me !!!Some classics are great comfort reads to me too, I am presently reading "Lady Audley's Secret" and I would gladly put it in this sweet category.....Greetings from France to all members !

Virginie, I am currently living in Belgium. Where in France are you living? I adore France. Vacation - well that is where we go! Or home to Sweden! Aren't you friends with Laura?

Thanks to you all !!!! What a great group with nice persons and wonderful books ahead.....!Chrissie, I live in Normandie, 25 km south from Rouen and about 100 km west from Paris.
I am friends with two Lauras I think , both of them are lovely persons, I will check on your profile which one you are talking about , with whom you probably are friends.
Whereabout are you in Belgium ? I love Belgium, we went to Brugge and Brussels last year for the spring vacations with our three kids and just had a wonderful time up there !I want to go back !
Chrissie , I see you are friends with the Brazilian Laura too and that she is in this group !!!So many friends in this heartwarming group !!!

Hi Virginie -- I love reading with my cats too!Welcome, I am dreaming of you and Chrissie living in Normandie and Belgium! I would love to visit both places one day.
Virginie, well Normandy is near Brittany. Which I adore!!!! Roscoff, that is where we always go! I am sure yo have been there. Why do we adore Roscoff - well b/c you get an old village right smack on the coast. Most villages are about 1/2 hour by foot to the shore. Not Roscoff. Ferries go to England from there. They are famous for their red onions. The whole area is wonderful for growing vegetables. Nevertheless I love all of France. Provence. Les Vosges. Ile de Ré. Gosh they have really been demolished in the storm. Sarkozy was in La Rochelle. Ile de Ré must have been even more destroyed; the island is so flat and practically divided in two by the water. I haven't seen pictures but I imagine the worst.Yup Laura is Brazilian!

Diane, I really hope you will, both are very nice places !!!!Love from France

I have never been to Roscoff, however I go every year to Perros Guirrec and Ploumanac'h, have you been there ? The boulders on your profile picture make me think of the famous Ploumanac'h boulders on the pink granite coast.....
Yes the storm that hit the Vendean coast at the end of February was terrible , I had tears in my eyes when watching the news, we were all devastated by the awful images we saw on TV.
I sent a message in French (a comment about your cute dog, they are all cute anyways your curly dogs and I was very interested reading about their smartness, I love animals) because I presume you speak FR , living in Brussels.
Love from Normandy on a Sunday afternoon; Virginie
      Hey Chrissie,
Thanks to all of these posts I finally took a look at the pics of your dogs. They are gorgeous! We just have a brown dog, kind of mixed from several breeds. :)
On a personal note -- I hope I can look as healthy as you do when I reach 58! I wish I had such a beautiful place to wander in.

Virginie, Yes of course I have been to Perros Guirrec and Ploumanac'h. Before we found Roscoff we visited Isle de Ré, but thought it was too little although lovely, then we traveled all around the Brittany coast line to pick where we liked best? Douarnez is lovely but dogs have to be kept on leashes on the beaches..... Pont Aven is fun with all its artistic history, The southern coast of Brittany has too many tourists. We like the more rugged coasts of northwestern Brittany, but the far western tip is all stone cliffs, and that is not either good for walking dogs on beaches. The Pink Granite Coast is about an hour and a half from Roscoff. I have collected stones from there. Hi Jeanette, years ago, when I was a tennager, I lved in Wilmette,Illinois. That is near where you live, right?! Or is that a different Jeanette?! Thank you for your compliment. Dogs keep you healthy b/c they need walks. Since I have been diabetic from 10 years of age, I eat healthy food. Being diabetic isn't all bad, there are pluses too. But hey, I would give it up in a minute if a cure came along. I doubt it ever will, not in my life time.I should add a more up to date pic. Now he is a robust, full of energy teenager.....
I live in Iowa, Christine in Illinois and Paula in Wisconsin (we are all Midwest neighbors). So, I am the Jeannette you are thinking of. :) I'll find out where Wilmette is; I have heard of it.
Our dog is slowing down (he's 13) and winters here are very cold and nasty, so I have missed the long walks we take in the warmer months. My husband takes him out when it is very cold! You and some others here are helping to inspire me to get healthier, too!

Jeanette, Skye, our last curly died when he was 13. Yes, it is horrible but the best thing is to get another dog as soon as possible. Just like with kids, you love each for their own qualities. Honestly, we would not walk as much as we do if we didn't have dogs. You just don't do it. And sure sometimes yo do not feel like it when you start, but you feel so wonderful afterwards. Exhausted and pooped, but stretched. And I can't help but laugh at Oscar who must carry a huge log or brach. Curlies are retrievers and he has it in his bones. We are so lucky, he never leaves us when we alk in the country. In town a leash is necessary. In Sweden this year it has been very cold minus 20degrees Centigrade and it has snowed so much they just don't know where to put it all. Funny weather the world is having. Toodles.

It's been extremely cold and snowy in Northern Germany as well (from what I've heard), which is unusual, as that area, while it might get some snow, usually gets more rain and fog during the winter months. My father's sister, who lives in Hannover, said she did not dare to leave her house for weeks because everything was snowed in and the streets, especially the side streets, had not been plowed. My aunt is over seventy years old, so she did not want to risk slipping on the ice and breaking something.
It is usually not this cold in Sweden and the amount of snow is setting records. Here in Belgium the winter has been cold too and the coldness has a yucky wet feel to it. i will take really cold temperatures with a clear sunny sky any day over wet humid coldness. YUCK!

It usually gets down to -20C or more (-15F) for a couple months in the winter in Iowa. A lot of snow in the entire country this year, including the Southern states, where they aren't used to it!
My in-laws are in Hildesheim, near Hannover, and they have talked about their awful winter weather, too. Lots of snow and ice. They said that Germany had run out of salt for the roads and you couldn't even buy table salt anywhere in the stores! My in-laws are in their 70's, too. What makes it worse is that the Germans are used to going to the store everyday, at least for bread! At least in the older generation, they don't tend to make big shopping trips like we do in the US.

But look, I like having winter and summer, then you appreciate both. People are always grumbling over the weather. Why bother...... although i do agree it is hard for the elderly. Flip it this way, if you don't like it move. I know I am being kind of brutal here.....

My aunt was lucky. Both her cleaning lady and my sister-in-law dropped off food etc., but I do wonder if others were not so lucky.
My mother-in-law put those little rings from canning jars around her shoes, toe and heel, to use as treads for her shoes. She only fell once, but luckily she didn't get hurt. My father-in-law stayed in. Luckily they have a neighbor who shovels when it snows on their day, too.

People always have and always will complain about the weather. It's human nature. When it gets hot around here in August (humid and buggy, too) we will complain about the heat. :)
Not everyone can move to avoid the weather. (While we are freezing in Iowa (-24C) it can be 42C in Australia, with brush fires and droughts.) But, that's why places like Florida and Arizona are full of retirees, people who flee the cold. We call these folks snowbirds. ;)

Interesting chat! Maybe you want to move the rest of the conversation to a chat thread? Just leave what you've already discussed here. ;-)

Hello all,Just found this discussion so haven't started my list of comfort read. I have recently finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. It will definitely be on my list of all time favourite books.
Sandy Too

I love that book! I read it on my Kindle, but then had to buy a paper copy for my permanent collection. Welcome to the group!

Hi, let me get my confession out of the way first--I'm addicted to reading.Looking around though, I think I'm in good company :)
I have a range of comfort books, so many that in joining various discussions here I'm wondering if I look like a spammer, or just overly chatty.
If I had to pick two, I'd go for "Moon Called" by Patricia Briggs and "The Fifth Elephant" by Terry Pratchett. But I have tons of re-read favourites. Some to cheer, some to soothe, some to make me think (always a hard task!).
It's lovely to be here discovering other people's favourites and adding them to my TBR pile.
Hi Jenny. Welcome to the group and thank you for your posts! Many of us are chatty here so you're fitting right in!
