Hi Sea, welcome to comfort reads and welcome to Goodreads! You will find thousands of books, discussions and readers here. It's a great place to host an online bookclub as well. I'm sure if you start chatting, you will meet lots of other readers.
An excellent way to find people you might like to befriend is to use the compare books feature on individual profiles. If you have any questions about our group or the sight in general, Lisa or I would be happy to help you.

Hi Lee,
Thanks for the response and the suggestions. I will work on adding to my book shelf or book collection on the site.
Feel free to check out my reading group, too as I'd love some feedback.

Welcome Ryan! You'll find many fans of animal stories here and I like adventure stories myself. I look forward to chatting with you.

Cinara | 7 comments Hello! My name is Cinara and I am a Public Sworn Translator for the English Language here in Brazil. I found this wonderful group after reading "Circle of Friends" recently (which I loved) and I am looking forward to the group's suggestions. I'm afraid I won't be able to be an active participant in all discussions right now, but I'm enjoying everything you have to share here!
Best regards to all from sunny Brazil!

Welcome Cinara! Right now it would be nice to be somewhere sunny and warm. *sigh*

I'll be happy again in May! Then I'll be crabby again by August. That's how it is living in a place with extreme seasons! :) (I would miss snow, too, but not the cold.)

Hi Cinara, Welcome to the group. Thank you so much for posting in the introductions thread. If/when you ever feel like participating, we'd love to have your input. In the meantime, I hope you find some more books to read when you peruse the threads and bookshelves.

Hi Cinara, welcome to the group! What an interesting sounding occupation you have. Feel free to participate as little or as much as you feel like. We love having international members!

message 213: by Cinara (new)

Cinara | 7 comments Thank you, Lisa and Lee! Besides translating legal documents I also translate movies and shows for cable channels like HBO, A&E, VH1 and E! from English to Portuguese. I've been doing that for almost 14 years now and I love it! That's one of the reasons I prefer reading books in English: it keeps my vocabulary sharp! ;o)

Welcome to the group MsBurb! I think you win the award for most original introduction. We have lots of murder mystery fans here so hopefully you will feel right at home.

message 216: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) MsBurb, Welcome! I love mysteries too. Check out the threads in the mystery folder and one of our polls asks for favorite genre. I saw you vote in another poll but, if you haven't already, you can put in another vote for mysteries. (I voted for children's but mysteries would have been my second choice.)

message 217: by B.J. (new)

B.J. Thompson (msburb) | 3 comments Wellll...murder is not a mystery to the one who DID it, now is it!!! (tee hee)

Thank-you for that kind welcome! You may, or may not, regret it in the future! (wink, wink)

message 218: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Ah yes, I've enjoyed some true crime books too although none of them have been comfort reads.

Sounds like you have a great job, especially translating movies and cable shows! I like your "Lucy" avatar - love Charlie Brown :)

B.J. Thompson (msburb) | 3 comments To Lisa,

Comfort reads on true murder IF you are studying the Murderer in a any detail...

To know him/her better, is to feel comfort!

Being me, that's about as comfortable as Life gets!

message 221: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) Hi, I'm Scout. I'm in the southern US. I'm a retired teacher. My favorite comfort read is To Kill a Mockingbird. I also like to curl up with Janet Evanovich's number books and Sue Grafton's ABC books. Emerson's essays give me comfort, too. What is it that makes books and food comforting?

message 222: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Hi Scout. I'm glad you joined the group. I love your screen name because I also love the book To Kill a Mockingbird!

Yes, food and books are very comforting. Take a look at the group (just for fun) polls and vote if you'd like Food is the subject of one of them.

Joy, I consider myself pretty lucky to be able to do something I really enjoy! And Lucy is really great: I have an old bookmark with Lucy saying "It´s not easy being perfect"! :oD

message 224: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 24 comments Hi, Scout! I'm also one of the group who love "To Kill a Mockingbird"!

In addition to Janet Evanvich's number books, I've come to love her "between the numbers" books as well. I think she's developed a viable 'love quadrangle' by adding Diesel to the mix.

message 228: by Sandy (last edited Feb 10, 2010 06:25PM) (new)

Sandy | 24 comments Hey Ryan, Cold Mountain and Touching the Void are two of my favorite reads as well. I just loved Cold Mountain and often think about things from it, even though I read it over 10 years ago. I am especially drawn to the touching and gentle way the old woman took the life of the kid goat when she needed to eat it. If we humans could always be as heartfelt and kind to the critters around us, even the ones we need to consume, we would have a different world, that is for sure. Remarkable moment in a remarkable book.
As for Touching the Void, that book has to be the most extra-ordinary, excruciating and gripping true-life book I have ever read. I have read it probably 5 times and reread portions of it dozens more. It is an intense and astounding drama which I have recommended time and again. Definitely one of the greatest books I have ever read. Not a very 'comfort'able but I keep going back to it!
Glad to see others here that have liked these two as much as I have!

message 229: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Touching the Void: The True Story of One Man's Miraculous Survival is an amazing book. Not a comfort read for me, but completely engrossing. It's still amazing to me that he survived.

message 230: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) Lisa, Lauren, Lee - Thanks for the welcome. Reading itself is comforting to me. If I have troubles and woes on my mind, I can open a good book and find some comfort. This is a great group!

Cinara, I have a black and white cat named Maggie (for Maggie the Cat in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof). She's keeping me company as I type. I like dogs, too, but Maggie's my bud.

Katri (Valancy) | 68 comments Hi! My name is Katri, I'm from Finland and 27 years old, and I've loved books all my life and I certainly can relate to turning to books for comfort and relaxation. :-) I found this book via some people on my friends list (*waves at Gundula and Abigail*) and finally decided I couldn't stay away. Some of my favourite authors include L.M. Montgomery, Patricia A. McKillip and Terry Pratchett; I want to be a novelist; and I'm crazily obsessed with European (especially Hungarian and Austrian) musical theatre, and also love both music and theatre separately.

Hi, Katri. I know you'll love this group. It's very addictive, and will most likely cause your to-read list to swell like anything.

message 240: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Katri and welcome to the group! You listed 3 of my favorite authors, especially Pratchett!

message 241: by Katri (new)

Katri (Valancy) | 68 comments Hehe, it's not like my to-read list isn't long enough already! But it's still always so nice to find more interesting books - I wonder why that is... And of course, it's particularly good to get new comfort reads recommendations! Thanks for the welcomes, I look forward to participating in this group. :-)

message 244: by Tammi (new)

Tammi | 12 comments Hi there, I'm Tammi from Cape Town South Africa. I have joined Goodreads recently. This is the first time I am browsing the Groups section and came across this group. This is the first time I have heard of "Comfort" Reads and you will not believe how pleased I am to find that I fall in this category! (sorry I can get a bit long-winded ;-)

I realised this because I used to really hoard books - I didn't even borrow them to my close friends. My excuse was because I don't get them back and they are costly. But the real excuse is that I love "browsing" through my collection and even reading passages out of them that I know made me feel good or comforted or special or or or... is that what comfort reading is?

The other reason is because I am not attracted to the 'classics' as I am supposed to be. I read them maybe because I felt I had to, to be able to call myself a book lover. But actually I am content reading and re-reading the same books or same type of books over and over again because of how they make me feel.

Anyway, wow, so this is nice.

message 245: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Welcome, Tammi! So glad that you found this group AND Goodreads.

Comfort reads are different for different people. There are some in this group who have some classics as their comfort reads, but the way you describe your comfort reads makes perfect sense, and I've done the same thing re reading passages out of favorite comfort read books in order to feel comforted or get a needed laugh or smile.

Have fun looking through the threads and bookshelves in this group, and feel free to post in any/all threads that appeal to you.

Also, Goodreads is a site with so much to offer and so many features, so enjoy exploring the whole site.

Glad to have you join us!

Hi Tammi, welcome to the group!
Isn't it nice that as we mature, we have the confidence to read what we like instead of what we think we should be reading? Join in the chat and suggestion threads whenever you feel comfortable.
