The Secret Story of Sonia Rodriguez

Would also work for task 2.15 as there is lots of Spanish in the story. A coming-of-age story about a Mexican-American girl living between twocultures. Very well done.

3.20 MEXICO by MELODY CARLSON (225 pgs.)
An OK read about a girl who travels to Mexico with her Aunt for New Year's. While there she befriends a girl in some dire straits and an old friend who wants to go to the next level in their relationship.

JIMMY'S STARS by Mary Ann Rodman (257 pgs.)
A very good tale about the life of a girl in 1942 America who has to deal with her beloved brother going off to WWII. I really liked reading a novel about those who were left behind during the war. I think they are often neglected for those in the action.

(Book 1) Eragon by Christopher Paolini (496 pgs) - Colorado Blue Spruce Young Adult Book Award (2005)
(Book 2) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl (176 pgs) - North Dakota Children's Choice Award (1985)
I was totally disappointed in Eragon :( The beginning was promising but 200 pgs in and i was falling a sleep. And then the action actually happened in the last 30 pgs.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a totally different story - i loved it. It was so sweet and charming. Totally worth the award.

VAMPS by NANCY A COLLINS (235 pgs)
I'm a big fan of Collins' adult vampire novles and this one for the YA audience did not diappoint. The Old Bloods are unhappy when a new Young Blood enters their private school. I look forward to reading more in this series.
THE RUNNING MAN by MICHAEL GERARD BAUER (294 pgs.)
Part magical realism, part horror this story tells of a boy who is haunted by nightmares of the titular character. When he is asked to draw a portrait of the elusive brother of his neighbor, he is forced to face his fear and ultimately understand them.

ADIOS TO MY OLD LIFE by CARIDAD FERRER (246 pgs.)
Alegrio Montero auditions for Oye Mi Canto a Latin American version of "American Idol" and when she is accepted her life changes forever. An interesting behind-the-scenes look at what goes in to making this type of reality show along with a coming of age/love story make this novel worth the read.

Impulse (GLMA '08-09)
672 pages
and
Speak (NJLA '02)
198 pages
I loved both of these books and I feel they both deserved the awards they received. Having had some experience with the subjects of these books, I felt a strong connection with the characters as they struggled with their difficult issues. Their stories felt authentic to me. Impulse was heartbreaking and so well-written. For a book about the aftermath of rape, I appreciated the tone and wit of Speak. My daughter may read this book soon, and I think it will provide me with a great opportunity to discuss the subject matter with her.

The story & the characters grabbed me from the first few pages. I could not put it down & am going to start the second book right now =)

Scrambled Eggs at Midnight
which had actually been on my TBR for awhile. (272 pages)
A fun teen romance about two characters trying to understand themselves apart from who their parents want them to be. The girl's mother was a Renaissance faire wench, which added some interesting setting.

And then The Ask and the Answer!! :)
