Jackie Lane (jaxlane) | 126 comments Donnajo, mind went down because I am working a lot more hours and then I have been running with my father back and forth the the doctor in NYC. Actually, currently my aunt is at Columbia in NYC and the same day my father is in Valley so this weekend has beeen divide and conquer between the 2 hospitals, but I got a bunch of reading done yesterday and today.

message 452: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments I know that i'll make the 144. The real reason for me doing this challenge is that I've never kept track of how many books I read, so I thought this would give me a chance to see. :o)

message 453: by Kelly (new)

Kelly I'm still working on my 5th, and just started on my 7th. I'm listing them in order of starting date, which I hope doesn't end up confusing me when there are overlaps and/or I start something at the end of the month and finish at the beginning of the next month.

message 454: by S.M. (new)

S.M. I don't expect to make 144. I usually average about 4 books a month so if I can make 60 that will be a great accomplishment for me. I don't want to force myself to read too quickly and not enjoy the books so I will read and enjoy it and whatever gets read this year will be enough for me.

message 455: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wldinnis) That is the right attitude Sheila. Usually during the school year, I average about 8 per month and in the summer it is a lot more. Last year, I read 125 which surprised me.

Yassemin (yas666) Darcy wrote: "Yas, even an interesting text book isn't as much fun as a for fun book. I hope you can back to your fun books fast!!"

I know..me too! I will be able too after Tuesday morning :D:D

message 457: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyauer) The real reason I joined this challenge, knowing that 144 books would be pushing it for me, is knowing how much time I spend on the computer. I'm hoping this will motivate me to read more and surf less. So far, it's working.

message 458: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished book 8. Working on book 9 Born of Fire (The League, #2) & book 10 Wicked Lovely.

This challenge has def pushed me to read this month. However, I know it will slow down once school starts on the 25th. That means shortly, homework & study time is priority. As long as I read one more book than last year (49) then I will be happy.

message 459: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Jackie, I hope everything goes okay for both your aunt and dad. Probably not the best way to get your reading done but at least you could pass the time somehow. I haven't read anything today yet. went to the mobbed supermarket. But hopefully when I get offline I'll get some done. Part of me wants to start something that I know I'll finish today and part of me just wants to continue with the Fern Michaels book and hope I finish that.

i suggest finishing the fern michaels as it will mean you will finish satisied that you have a not got it in the back of ur mind magging you!!

message 461: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo You are probably right. then the only other two books I have kind of started is The fourth angel and that book is okay but it's not calling me. And another one I started last year for a book group but didn't end up going and really wasn't into the book too much was Blackbird House by Alice Hoffman. I hate to give up on the second one alittle less than 1/2 way though it. So it's one of those that is good to pick up every once in awhile and read a story. Really if it isn't romance short story I not too crazy about it.

message 462: by LooLoo (new)

LooLoo I've read 10 books so far and I'm hoping to finish 8-10 more before the month is over.

message 464: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) I am working on

#24 Plain Truth listening on audio cd

#25 Fear the Worst

#26 Unshapely Things

Normally I don't have 2 books going at once, but I started both and they were just ok, so I have been switching back and forth with them.

message 465: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenvwrites) | 122 comments I am reading 2 at once right now so I can play catch up.
Triptych--karin slaughter and Eggs in Purgatory--Laura childs

message 466: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I just finished #11. The Screaming Room Excellent book

message 467: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Good gosh Darcy - 23 books already finished!? WOW!

message 468: by Kellyyyylynne (new)

Kellyyyylynne I have finished 6 books so far which is pretty good for me. I had been reading about 8-10 a month. I have finally given in to listening to books on my IPod which I really never thought I would get into. I listen to them while I am working. It works out since I work very independently and spend a lot of my time currently doing research for the company. I have only finished one book so far but it was a good experience.

message 469: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I'm the same way, Kelly. I have had a few experiences with audiobooks and didn't like them at the time. I'm glad I'm giving it another try. I'm going to listen to one at work this week too.

message 470: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments What I wish is that there was a way to HEAR say, 4 or 5 pages of the audio book before you either bought it, traded for it or borrowed it from the library. Some readers are very good (James Marsters) and some are so far past HORRIBLE that there just isn't a word to describe them (whoever it was who read Metro Girl) That reader has the most boring, flat delivery I've EVER heard. Couldn't even finish listing past about 15 minutes. I just went and checked the book out from the library--and it was MUCH better than that reader was showing it to be. As a result of this complaint, I have a hard time with audio books.

I recommend trying out Audible. Their previews are a lot longer than, say, iTunes. Plus, if you are a member, their prices are reasonable.

message 472: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wldinnis) I finished my ninth book last night. I started reading it at night and stayed up until it was finished because it was good.

I agree about being able to listen to more. Itunes gives you a small snippet but it is not enough. So far I have been lucky with the few I have listened to but I am sure one of these days I am going to get some annoying person's voice and it is going to drive me crazy!

yes but if you norm to 8-10 and 1 audio 2 weeks so 2 audio 4 weeks you can get 10-12 boks a month and you will get 144 books a year if you to keep to top end!

message 478: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I've only just finished my fifth book for the month. It may be a bit tough to catch up, but I'll be trying my hardest!

message 479: by Kelly (last edited Jan 18, 2010 04:20PM) (new)

Kelly You can do it Karen and Jamie!! I'm right there with ya. I just finished my 7th (Mania by Craig Larsen, which I highly recommend to any of you who love thrillers), and I'm still in the middle of my 5th for the month (The Writing Class, which I also highly recommend - it's so funny). I had started Book #5, paused to read #6, read a little more of #5, paused to read #7, and now back to #5 lol. So basically, I have 5 1/2 left to read before the end of the month.

message 480: by Mackenzie (new)

Mackenzie RM (mackenzierm) | 87 comments That's really good Kelly ! Keep it up :) I'm on my 8th and 9th book, but I think I'm in a reading rut as I just don't feel any inclination to read anymore.. *-).. not cool at all lol.

message 481: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Thanks Mackenzie!! :)

I understand about reading ruts. Maybe if you find something short and fun, you'll get in the mood to read again. I put a couple young adult books that I read back in middle/high school on hold at the library to read whenever they come in, figuring it will be a nice and fun little break from the longer/heavier stuff at the end of the month.

message 482: by Mackenzie (new)

Mackenzie RM (mackenzierm) | 87 comments That's true. Well, I'm reading the 6th book in a series I really like. As they're so fast-paced and idk, I just love the characters and the plot and stuff, so I was hoping I'd be able to get through it fairly quickly, but it's not working out so well, sadly !:(

message 483: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 95 comments i finished my 5th book today. i'll start #6 tonight or tomorrow at work. i'm hoping this one will go quickly. i also have my library book club, so if i can find my notebook with my book list, i'll be able to pick up another slew of books to nudge up towards 12 for the month. i'm hoping to at least hit 10.

Vicky, do you have your own thread set up in the "U-Z Lists" section? I didn't see one, but I might have just overlooked it. We're each making our own thread in the spot that corresponds to the first letter of our first name, if that makes sense. Let me know if you have any questions. :-)

10 - Buckingham Palace Gardens by Anne Perry
I really like her books although by the end I'm emotionally exhausted. She creates very deep characters and by the time I'm finished, I feel I've learned and felt what they went through.

message 489: by Kelly (last edited Jan 18, 2010 05:32PM) (new)

Kelly It's okay, Vicky. :) Just go to the home page for the group, and scroll through the discussion boards to the end, and click the bolded heading called "U-Z lists". Then in the gray bar below the name of the group, click "New Topic" and put your title in the topic box (Vicky's 144 in 2010 or something similar, whatever you want to call it). In the comment box, you can start your list. You can browse through other people's lists to see if you want to keep track by month, or just one long list - whatever works best for you. Hope that helps, lemme know if you need anything else. :)

Dorothy (vilette) | 208 comments Hi all, I've just found out about this group and with some trepidation I've decided to accept the challenge. I usually read 100 + books per year so I'm hoping I'm up to increasing this. I'm still not quite sure how to post to a folder based on my name...but I'm going to give it a try

Dot, just go to the D folder and click on "view all", then click on "new topic". Then start your list! Name it with something you'll know is yours so you can find it again.

message 492: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Hi Dot--welcome to our merry band of literary miscrents. :o)

MacKenzie--maybe that's your problem--trying to read too many of the same series can get a little stale. So put that book down and go grab a nice hot chocolate with LOTS of whipped creme and find a book that is as unlike that series as you can get your hands on. Then, maybe go back to your series--unless you are still feeling in a rut, in which case read another 1--this time somewhere in the middle between the series and the 1 you just finished. That's what I do when I feel burned out. :o) Especially if I've just been working on a series that's more than 3 books long.

message 493: by Mackenzie (new)

Mackenzie RM (mackenzierm) | 87 comments Ahh, good tip Ann! I shall remember that for next time I'm in a rut! I spent 20 mins reading to try and get back into the book I was reading so I'm hoping that I'm on my way to getting out of my rut! :)

message 494: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Vicky, I read the Macomber series I'll check what the first one is on the Blossom street one and post it the next time online. I'm pretty sure that going by one of her last books it's The Shop on Blossom Street. Then it's back on Blossom street. I didn't see any others listed so probably that is how it is.

message 495: by Dorothy (new)

Dorothy (vilette) | 208 comments Thanks for the welcome...I have managed to start my page but in the process I seem to have strayed on to someone else's list by mistake...my humble apologies.

message 496: by [deleted user] (new)
