Nita (gillnit) I am a librarian and love libraries, so I get most of my books from the library. Plus I am part of a really large library system, so I can find most of books I am interested in pretty easily. But I also like going to bookstores to browse and see what's new.

message 652: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) I tnd to buy books new and second hand from shops , charities or online

I used to visit the library and get a lot from there but recently that has nearly come to a stop

Mostly the library, there are enough dead trees out there. Otherwise, I buy them second hand. The only new books I have are presents, then I usually read them and pass them on so the tree gets a chance to do more than sit on my self.

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I do both. Buy and library.

You've started an interesting thread here...I just read somewhere that in a recent poll, one thing people do not want to give up buying in the recession is books. This both surprised and delighted me since I become quite despondent at the thought that books might go the way of papyrus tablets once people get used to reading on Kindle and other techno things. For myself, although I enjoy books on CD, I love the feel of a new book in my hand...it's part of the experience. I buy books for myself both from independent booksellers when I can, from Amazon.ca or Chapters-Indigo.ca and from second hand stores. I'm lucky to live in an area well served by independents and used book stores...we even have used book store dedicated solely to mystery novels :-) I have family and friends well trained to give me books for Christmas and birthdays :-) I also use the library mostly for audio books but sometimes for new novels or non-fiction.

message 656: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments I go to the library, buy from Amazon.com, used bookstores, thrift stores, yard sales. . .Even Ebay at times.

message 657: by [deleted user] (new)

I love to see that so many buy second hand books and go to the library =)

I worry that my two favorite hobbies use so much paper. Reading and scrapbooking.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 158 comments Most of the audio books from the library now are for download. You don't even have to leave your home.

I get about half my books from the library, half from used book sales, and half from friends. (You got a problem with three halves?)

message 659: by Caitrin (new)

Caitrin (literarydependent) I use the library! I definitely can't afford to buy books. I usually save up to get a book I know I will reread again or can't wait to read when it gets to the library.

message 660: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wldinnis) I buy, use the library, and buy for my Sony Reader. I am trying to not do a lot more buying as I have a ton of books in the house still to read (and I keep requesting more from the library). I would like to keep my book costs down this year :)

Last night I finished #14 Sphinx's Princess by Esther Friesner. A great dramatization of the early life on Nefertiti which is mostly shrouded in mystery. I believe there will be another book to follow-up on this one.

message 661: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) I am part of a group here on GR that are also trying to restrict their buying save money or trying to get their tbr down.

the challenge is to read 5 books that they own and haven't read before they buy a new book.

That's a good idea. My husband tried to limit me to only getting a new book if 2 went out of the house...but it never took :-)

I also borrow and lend between friends and a lot of books change hands in that way.

message 663: by [deleted user] (new)

Completed book 11. Working on 12, I think I should be able to get it finished right before midnight on the 31st. Then I'll be on schedule for at least one month. Hooray!

message 664: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C I did it! I made the goal for month 1! I am so proud of myself. I didn't think I could do it. Thanks everyone here for your support. I am really enjoying this group. Lol, although my TBR pile is growing, not getting smaller. lol

message 665: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) congrates lyssa and jennifer

I have read 15 this month so far and should have my 16th finished by tommorrow I think

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Well, its snowing like crazy here--everyone's stuck in the house, so I'm either going to get a LOT of reading done--or else I'm going to get more work done on my quilts. NOt sure which I want to do right now.

message 667: by Ronda (new)

Ronda Tutt (rondatutt) I am so excited and shocked that I made the goal of reading 12 books in the month. I not only reached the goal but read 2 more books on top of that and I am in shock. I didn't realize how many books I read in the month. 14 books this month, I hope I can do it again next month. happy readings everyone.

I would go for quilts just so you don't end up feeling overloaded with reading!!

And it gives the rest of us a chance to catch up LOL!!!

I started Stray by Rachel Vincent and so far it has been a quick, easy, fun read. I'm really enjoying it.

This is a favorite of mine. I hope you keep reading it, the series get better as it goes. The last book had me in tears at one point. A new one (#5 Shift) comes out in a few weeks.

message 673: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jnhart) Just finished #11 ( The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan )
Working on Trick of the Light (Trickster, #1) by Rob Thurman and [image error]

message 674: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I was hoping to finish one book which I have around 1 1/2 short stories to read to finish. Less than 40 pages. Then I started reading a book yesterday and have less than 1/2 to finish. So I know that will get in. But being out today messed up my sheduling on finishing those and still being able to get another book in this month. So if computer doesn't take up much time tonight I'll get at least one in then I'm just hoping to finish the other tomorrow and keeping my fingers crossed for a third. It will be 17 books if it happens which hasn't happened in awhile. I'm at 14 now. This week will be busy with 2 appts (one a eye appt so don't think I'll get much reading done that day.

message 676: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I hope I get that many read in a month some time this year.

message 677: by TinaNoir (new)

TinaNoir I've settled on my format. Shortly before the month begins, I am creating a post for that month with the intended reads. As the month goes on, I am editing the month with the finished date next to the book. I am re-posting my ticker at the bottom so that it always stays at the bottom.

Obviously, I figure, if I read 12 books a month I am on track. So far in January I have read 18. Which is awesome, but I doubt if that'll keep up. Lol.

message 678: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I finally had a chance to read today and finished #11. I have all day tomorrow to finish #12. So at least I will have made January's goal. I'm almost done with one audiobook also and more than half done with another one.

Gina (ginrobi) | 84 comments My goal was to read 12 books every month, bringing the total to 144 for the year. I'd have to say, I'm a head of the game. Woohoo! I've read 15 books this month, and am almost halfway through #16 with Sunday still to go.

message 685: by Pat (new)

Pat | 162 comments I general get my fiction at the library and non-fiction or work related books I purchase usually through Amazon. I go to one or two library books sales - stock up on fiction I haven't read and then donate them back. When I am on vacation, I buy one or two paperbacks to read on the plane and then loan from the laundyroom library at the condo. Many of the books there are old but now and again I find a real jewel. Audio CD's I also get from the library or my friend Susan is always dropping some by.

message 686: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Afsana--there is no worry about my getting tired of reading. Its something that I have always done and enjoyed. I tend to read somewhere between 300 and 400 books a year, even when I'm not doing a challenge. But I have done another colour test for the heirloom quilt I'm working on (taking a class for it) Jenny Haskins New Quilt: Roses For Mary And I'm still not happy with the colour combinations. I'm going to try a different green for the next trial. Thank goodness the class is only 1 day a month. :o)

I'm glad I've had such a streak of good books this month, since last month I seemed to pick one stinker after another LOL

message 689: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (stacieh) | 247 comments I managed to finish 15 books this month which, frankly, surprised me :) I'm packing up to move now, though, so I suspect my number for Feb will be less than that. On the bright side, the place I'm moving to is a lot cheaper so that could lead to more books... uh, I mean more savings. Yeah, saving... that's what I meant ;)

message 690: by Ronda (new)

Ronda Tutt (rondatutt) Hi everyone, I have been following and even replying to some of the comments in this group and I want you all to know that you have all inspired me and even given me some books to add to my wish list to read. At first when I saw how many books everyone was reading especially if they had read 10 or 15 books by the middle of the month, I was amazed! I was like on my 5th book and was like I don't know if I can read 12 books in one month but to my surprise, I read 15 for the month of January.

Good Job everyone, look forward to February and seeing everything you all have read. Its funny how my wish list has trippled its size since I joined this group. LOL

I get a ton of books from the library - we are blessed to have a great library locally, I am so thankful. I pick up a lot of books at used boookstores and also through swapping at work. My ex-boss is a voracious reader, as is his wife, and they are at the stage of their life where they have a substantial amount of disposal income - I was the happy recipient of their largesse, as they only bought hardback books for certain authors - anything else they bought in paperback they would pass on. I think I have 50-60 books on my TBR pile right now just from them! I like to pick up bargain books at B&N and through Amazon too. All the supplemental book sources keep me from living in my car, towing a trailer behind for books, because i have a serious lack of impulse control when it comes to books!! my resolution for this year is to not actually buy ANY - except Lauren Willig's new book :) however I am going to try to restrain myself on that one to see if I eventually get it for my birthday.

message 692: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) I think initially a lot of people thought this goal seemed out of reach for them and it is great to see how many people are surprised by how many they are reading. I am betting you were reading like this all along, but when you don't track it doesn't seem like it.

Jamie I've read 9 this month, and will be trying to finish another one tonight. Although I didn't reach my goal, I'm still pleased, since I'd been in a really long reading slump. I found several really great books this month, too!

message 696: by Kim (new)

Kim I managed 11 in January. I thought I might manage the last one over the weekend- but I work Saturdays and we had a family party for my girls 16th yesterday. So all of the morning was spent on housework and the afternoon preparing the food and the late afternoon enjoying our party. No reading at all- and I can't remember the last time I didn't read at least something in a day!

message 699: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo today I'm having more problems because it's the 1st of the month. The books that are started I know I will not finish today Part of me wants to start something that I will finish yet that wouldn't help tomorrow. I know I just have to pull one book and settle in with it and read it. If I don't finish one today so be it. I got 17 last month and every month will not be like that and this month it's shorter.

message 700: by Tricia (new)

Tricia Well, I only managed eight books for January, but it was a busy month and I was sick. Hopefully I'll get caught up in February!
