35.5 Resolutions

I made a resolution to be a great parent to my now 1 year old daughter.

Book 1 has "Parenting" in the title: The Three-Martini Playdate: A Practical Guide to Happy Parenting, which is a funny, tongue in cheek approach to parenting that someone gave me as a gift after the baby was born. I gave it 3 stars.

Book 2 was about parenting - Kids Are Worth It!: giving your child the gift of inner discipline. Fantastic perspective on raising children. I gave this book 5 stars.

Krista (kacey14) Congratulations on completing the challenge Ashley!!

Newly Completed Tasks:
10.5 – Popularity Contest (on the 2009 year list):
Read: The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver
This was another engrossing book by Barbara Kingsolver. I especially enjoyed this one as it was partially set in Mexico and featured Digeo Rivera and Frida Kahlo. I’ve read quite about about both of them, and have even visited their ‘Blue House’ in Mexico City. It was nice to take this trip down memory lane. The book posed some great questions, and I learned more about the communist witch hunts of the 1950’s. It’s not the best chapter in American history! I’m giving this one 5 stars.
At 508 pages this qualifies for a second ‘I Love Big Books’ ticket for me. (The first book I read to earn a ticket was 820 pages.)

20.1 - ROOKIE OF THE SEASON - BETH MN'S TASK - REVISITING THE PAST: -- Used Fall Challenge Task 20.1 (Most Improved Player) Julie KS, Read a Christian Fiction Book
Read: Burn by Ted Dekker and Erin Healy (Goodreads Author!)
This was a fast paced Christian Suspense book with a touch of the supernatural thrown in to spice things up. It was okay. I gave it 2 stars. (That rating doesn’t mean I hated it. It just didn’t break a whole lot of new ground for me.)

30.7 - JAN THE GRYPHON’S TASK - MULTI-TASKING:
Read: Tea Time for the Traditionally Built by Alexander McCall Smith (Actually I listened to this in audio book format. I think that is the BEST way to enjoy this series. The accents are just so luscious.)
This works for Winter Challenge Tasks 5.10 (Alliteration), AND 30.1 (Published in last decade). I think it would also work for the Cozy Mystery task too. These are just such nice cozy little stories.

Total Points: 325

Lori (batchelorxyz) | 218 comments For task #15.5 I read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. It was from the country Lesotho. I also read The Giver by Lois Lowry. It was from the country Botswana.

I did not like The Glass Castle. I wanted to kill her parents. I had severe homicidal thoughts while reading this book.

I loved The Giver. I cannot believe I have never read it before this. I was definitely missing out.

So this new 15 points gives me a total of 135. I will be lucky to break 200 this time. Life is interfering with my reading. LOL

Vicki | 63 comments For Task 25.10

Fot the book with a cover that drew me in I readTail Spin by Catherine Coulter

Tail Spin (FBI Thrillers, #12) by Catherine Coulter

To understand why it caught my eye, I'm an engineer in the aerospace industry and a picture of a plane coming down gets my attention. Not to mention, when I saw it I was sitting in an airplane waiting for takeoff.

I always said that I would not read a comic book once they got delusions of grandeur and became "graphic novels", so I decided to read one that was about a character that was similar to me.

Wonder Woman: Down to Earth by Greg Rucka

Wonder Woman Down to Earth by Greg Rucka

OK so except for the body and the magic powers she's just like me!

Dewey The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron

It was a nice, fun book. Until the end when it brought back the image of having to put a cat that I had loved for 18 years to sleep!

Janice | 714 comments 20.1 (Revisit the Past)

I chose the past task 25.6, which was to read a book outside your normal genre. (Young Adult)

A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb(4 stars)

I don't usually read YA novels. However, I love ghost stories, and I'm intrigued by after-death theories, so I thought I'd give it a try. This book was compulsively readable, had an ending that tied most of the earlier symbols and visions together, and left me thinking about the great unknown. What more can a reader ask? I would have given it 5 stars, but the author never expanded on the dark forces haunting the two ghosts. These entities were mentioned over and over, but then the author seemed to forget about them.

Ellen (missellen82) | 216 comments 30.2. HELEN'S TASK - SCIENCE FICTION - PAST AND PRESENT
A. Past: Choose A Sci-Fi Novel Written By An Author Who Has Won A
Hugo OR Nebula Award Prior To The Year 2000. Read Neuromancer
B. Present: Choose A Sci-Fi Novel Published During The Current Century. Read The Speed of Dark
C. Technology in Neuromancer is a integral part of the book -- the story could not be told without it. The Speed of Dark is more about psychology and relationships and the changes technology can bring to these. Neuromancer was written when science fiction was much more about the technology because society as a whole was fascinated by what computers could do. Now that the internet and computer are pervasive people are much more interested in studing and reading about how technology actually affects humans and society.

Nicole | 116 comments I'm so impressed with all the people that finished. I thought I was holding my own, but my hat is off to the finishers!

Finished the following:
15.1 Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron and watched "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard." I have loved Jasper Fforde before, but I struggled with this one - might have been that he writes such a complex story and it was too much for audio.

25.9 The Monsters of St. Helena: A Novel had several maps, but was painful to get through. And The Lost Symbol had a number of maps, drawings and additions to the text, but unfortunately I was kind of bored through it. I usually enjoy Dan Brown, but even during the climax I had no problem putting this one down and walking away.

Petra Completed Task 15.7 by reading Looneyspoons and making the Anchors A-weigh Seafood Lasagna for dinner last night (and left-overs for today).
I like the jokes and quips throughout this book as well as the nutritional information given for each recipe. The names of the recipes are humerous as well. Some examples are: Chicken Catcha Tory, Chicken And Rice And Everything Spice, Wake Up And Smell The Coffee Cheesecake (which is on my list of recipes to try).
I'll be making more of these recipes. They're based on healthy options and the lasagna was really tasty.

I started with An Angel for Emily for 5 points with A LIBRARIANS JOB IS NEVER DONE as the main character is a small town librarian. Next I read Holly for Holly for SILVER SCREEN CELEBRATIONS takes place partially at Christmas - I watched many Christmas movies back in December including all the Santa Clause movies. Finally I just completed The Duchess for WENDY'S TASK - WINTER VACATION DREAMS - I never used to include Scotland at the top of my list of places to visit but ever since I read Outlander the first time it's risen up there. Deedee | 2344 comments Hello all! I'm going to claim points for two more tasks:

5.3. A WINNING DECADE - As We Transition From One Decade To The Next We Should Recognize The Books That Won Us Over In The Last One…For This Task Read A Book That Has Received A Literary Award During The Years (2000-2009).

The Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flannery... is an annual prize awarded by the University of Georgia Press named in honor of the American short story writer and novelist Flannery O'Connor. I read the 2003 winner Curled in the Bed of Love: Stories by Catherine Brady (Hardcover, 232 pages).

This collection of 11 stories is definately a 5 * read.

AND

5.10 THE ALLURE OF ALLITERATION - Read A Book Whose Title Contains Alliteration - The Title Must Have 2 Or More Words That Begin With Same Letter Back To Back OR With Only A Short Word In Between (i.e. A, And, In, On, The etc.) I read Doctor Who: The Price of Paradise by Colin Brake Hardcover, 256 pages. Reads just like an episode from the Second Series of the TV Show "Doctor Who", the one with David Tennant as the Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose.

Tanya D (mtlbookworm) | 144 comments Just finished reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery for task 10.4. It was a 5 star on PJReads' shelf.

I've got to say though, I just don't get what the appeal was. I know the book got fantastic reviews, but I didn't like it at all. Too much phycological analysis. Maybe it just wasn't my thing...

That'll bring me to 215 pts.
