Jenny Not me - I like to listen to music and read, work, paint, etc. It doesn't mess with my concentration, actually enhances it depending on the music and task.

I find I cannot read with music on- yet have little trouble reading in crowded, noisy places- like trains, planes...and to complete the title..automobliles

Bridgette, I find that amazing. When I was talking about music, the most I intended was Easy listening music but listening to pop (I assume that is what you meant) would not work.

My listening is limited to Baroque, Bach or Mozart in particular. I don't want to get caught in the words of the music. Wow. Impressed that you can do that. :)

Bridgette | 6 comments oh i ment pop not classical

I know I know! That is why I am amazed. Hehehehehe. could never read while listening to pop with words even.

It depends on the subject matter: for fiction - no. For non-fiction or something for a class - yes - because otherwise I will fall asleep!

well I don't listen to recent pop, but I listen to mostly stuff with words, pop from 5 or 10 years ago that sort of thing. but of course I don't really listen I just use it to drown out sounds around me.

Aloha | 46 comments Finished Hyperion (Hyperion, #1) by Dan Simmons . I'm disappointed that the ending is forcing me to have to read the second book to get satisfaction. Although the story was entertaining throughout, the ending wasn't climactic for me. I'll probably be comparing to Dune (Dune Chronicles, #1) by Frank Herbert forever until I find a SciFi I like more, but I felt Dune was a very satisfactory book from beginning to end without having to go to the next book in the series. I'd rather a book, whether in a series or not, give me the wow factor by itself.

Later, I'll hop into the discussions about Hyperion for more insight. Reading The Fall of Hyperion (Hyperion, #2) by Dan Simmons next.

Continuing to read Cows by Matthew Stokoe , which is still disgusting but terrifically written.

Jerry H | 54 comments Just finished Impact as quick a read as any I can remember. With little character development, it is all about the plot. If you're looking for a fast paced thriller, this is it.

message 3966: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) classical anyone can listen to, it is background, but once you add singers and lyrics, that is another ballgame. Then my feet start tapping and I have to belt out the song, and you know where this is going. that is why I can sweep and sing, much like Cinderella or Snow White.LOL

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 131 comments I'm currently reading Winter Study by Nevada Barr. It's all about wolves, which are my all-time favourite wild mammals. And, I really like Anna Pigeon. She's a tough-as-nails park ranger, who finds herself involved in a lot of dangerous, harrowing situations.

message 3968: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Never read Nevada Barr. sounds interesting though.

OK, just finished Fahrenheit 451. That was so creepy and so amazing. I had never read Ray Bradbury before. Heard him mentioned lots on Goodreads, so went and bought it last night. Just done. Very thoughtful, great insights. Love it.

Yes, great book and movie. My first grown-up book I received as a gift was R Is for Rocket a collection of short stories some of which I remember to this day. Which reminds me...I need to add it to my list.

Bradbury = genius. He and Arthur C. Clarke were two mainstays of mine growing up, and I still enjoy both.

message 3974: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay, based on all these responses, now I have to see the movie. Thanks everyone.

Steve Runnalls | 3 comments Just finishing It by Stephen King. I wish he'd written the same story without the horror, just a story about childhood. He catches childhood so well in places in the book, and he is such a good story-teller. Anyone read Shoreshank - is it a great horror novel with the horror taken out?

message 3976: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sophie714) Currently reading Wicked The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (Wicked Years, #1) by Gregory Maguire ... been intrigued to read this due to all of the Broadway shows based on this book (which is returning for a new season of shows to my town soon), as well as exploring a different insight into the much beloved tale based in the land of Oz...

I didn't like it. Gave up around page 60.

But I am not big on fantasy.

There seems to be more to it than humor. Wasn't expecting that making it more enriching with laughing out loud moments has been fun.

Still dragging through Death of the Heart by Elizabeth Bowen. Sigh! wish I had the nerve to put it down for good. On page 345 and so lame. so far. :)

Monica (nutz4reading) | 10 comments Sonia wrote: "Does anyone listen to music while they read?"

I love to listen to music when I read. I have noticed that when I don't listen to music I usually get distracted by people around me that are talking or even just by the sheer quietness of the room. I have not really noticed if it depends on the book.

I usually listen to my ipod which contains, pop, rap, classical, holiday and more. If I don't have my ipod then I either listen to music choice on the TV or my radio in my bedroom.

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments Hi, I'm a bit behind with this thread I'm afraid, I've been a bit busy working on the follow up to 'the day the ravens died' on the topic of music, I like the old 60's stuff playing quietly while I write, yet quiet when I read. As for the comments on why you pick up a particular book, I reckon the cover of 'Ravens' is pretty good but I'll try to make sure 'the ungaurded land' is better and the synopsis, how can I put it? a bit more intriguing. Thanks for the feed back. All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer]

I can't read and listen to music, but I don't mind to have the tv on.

Currently I am half way thru Lavinia and also half way thru City of Glass and I really like both of these so far.

Life is short. If you're that far along and it still sucks, PUT IT DOWN and pick up something else. :)

message 3987: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments I agree Jenny, why do people bother to flog through mountains of dry old chips when there are loads of real page turners out there. Just because someone paid a load of money by the publisher says it is 'brilliant', or a 'real classic' etc I never pay the slightest attention to what the media has to say about any book, simply because they are ALL paid to write it. I, as an author, do pay a lot of attention to what you guys have to say. You've bought the book and that keeps me, and the family warm and fed!!

I once put down a 900 page book at page 850. For me, the plot just went off the tracks. It hurt to give up that far along but I just didn't like the way it was going.

message 3991: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments Well done Sonia, check out some G.R recommendations. One tip to avoid the 'dry as old chips' stuff is always remember most of the stuff in the charity shops is there for a reason. Who do you know who gives away a really great book? I don't know many.
I'm not saying all of them in the bargain shops are bad, but if there is a title you see regularly in such places, just ask your self why ?
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer] happy reading.

message 3992: by [deleted user] (new)

Very good advice Tim, thank you. This was in the library book shop. I should have known. I had never read anything for her and thought to give it a try. Glad it's over, onto another.

message 3993: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments Hi Sonia,
I've just been having a 'nosey' at the sort of books you read, I can't put my hand on my heart and say you'd like mine, they don't seem to be your type of reading at all. Action thrillers? no I thought not! Our tastes in music are poles apart as well, I'm into old rock and blues stuff Fleetwood Mac, Led Zepplin etc.
But Back to books, I really wish publishers would stop churning out the same dull old 'safe' stuff over and over. Just because someone has written one good one, it doesn't follow the next one, usually written against a deadline will be as good. Someone on G.R. described it as regurgitated verbiage!, how I wish I'd thought of that one!
The only way I can think of to reduce the risk of a repeat is to find someone on here with similar tastes and look at their comments and reviews. It isn't fool proof but shifts the odds in your favour.
So, from one grand parent to another I wish you happy reading, and may all your choices be 'page turners'
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer]

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments Hi Carmel,
Oh yeah? and what dark/dirty things would we be deleting there while I'm writing this?
As for the music!! it's still around. There is a band around over here called 'The Deborah Bonham Band' The late great John Bonham's little sister' I saw them about a year ago, they finished off their set with 'Rock'n Roll' as she put it 'a tribute to my late big brother.'
Now I am lucky enough to have seen Led Zep live three times, everytime they played 'Rock'n Roll' they were great and the place went nuts. But I have NEVER, EVER seen anything like her band doing it, the place went absolutely ballistic,I'm sure big Bro. was playing along on the great big drum kit in the sky, more than a little bit proud of his younger sister, and probably a little envious.
What an end to a night!! wow, lucky me to have been there.
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer]

Yet, I love Patterson, Koontz and King. So, I might like yours also. Never know. all the movies I watch are action, mystery, sci-fi. So, not sure but I probably would love it. Enjoy Hiaasen who is along those lines also. At least should give it a try. :)
