I started The Hound of the Baskervilles the other day because I've never read a Sherlock Holmes book and was curious. So far, it's very good and the character of Watson is really quite charming.

I'm listening to the audio of Fade Away by Harlan Coben. Coben is one of my "go to" authors when I want to be sure I'll enjoy a book.
i, too, recently started Hound. i'm about halfway done. real enjoyable so far. i haven't read any holmes stories for years.

It's a great book for a first Holmes read. I hope you enjoy it, they only get better!
Barbara wrote: "I'm listening to the audio of Fade Away by Harlan Coben. Coben is one of my "go to" authors when I want to be sure I'll enjoy a book."Did you like the last Myron Bolitar? I kind of found it flat. Almost like well, the fans have been wanting Myron back so he trotted him out in a mediocre way so none of us would ever ask again.
Did I tell you all I'm nearly finished reading "Ape House," by Sara Gruen of "Water For Elephants," fame? It's a good read. Similar in interest as "Water..." but not the knock-you-off-your-feet read like "Resurrectionist." It's the kind of book that's enjoyable and recommendable. :]

I hope he likes it. I don't think he's ever finished one of the audio books he's gotten. Maybe this one will keep his interest.
I am reading
This book has been on my TBR list for a long time. I enjoy reading any book that has a witchy theme. As we getting near autumn, it matches my mood! I have put off reading in the past incase it was too spooky for my liking, but thought I would give it a go!
I just finished The Thirteenth Tale which I loved. This is one that I am sure I will re-read. I am half way thru Wuthering Heights an just getting started on The Passage

Flora- very interested in your take on The Passage- and how it compares to our Buddyread thoughts about that book

It was Long Lost. As I recall, it kind of picked up years after the last. So, I don't know, Win seems kind of droopy and tired. It just seems wrong for Win to be so middle aged and blah.
I'm not reading anything, all I'm doing is promoting my novel, SHEgo, as of late :0(~ Tania

:] but I think it might be similar.
I just finished two books I really liked: The Thirteenth Tale and The Piano Teacher. I am still thinking about the characters, especially from The Piano Teacher.

interesting- I heard alot of good things about The Piano Teacher

I just started the memoir of Drew Brees, the Quarterback of the New Orleans Saints. he has an amazing story to tell. Also as classy a person as you will find in sports. I will then follow this book with the book by Sean Payton who is the head coach of the Saints. So both books make a perfect "double feature"
How bout them aints? Doormats to kings. I think Katrina blowing through there brought some secret ingredient with it. I could not believe San Diego trading Brees, and especially after he caught fire. I rate him up there with Peyton and Brady.
Linton wrote: "How bout them aints? Doormats to kings. I think Katrina blowing through there brought some secret ingredient with it. I could not believe San Diego trading Brees, and especially after he caught fir..."I agree! Also both books seem very well written!

One of my Goodreads friends and I are continuing our buddy read of Stephen Lawhead's King Raven trilogy, so I started the second novel, Scarlet, over the weekend. So far, it's as good as the first one!

Flora- the wonderful thing about this Group isour diversity of thought- so I must warn you- many in the Passage Buddyread were not very keen on the book!

I have all three books in the series in my personal library- but then I have about 1000 other books as well- really want to start series too, Kyle- but still chomping through 3 books I am currently reading!

I just began Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. This is my first foray into Gaiman and am not really sure what to expect. But I am leaving my mind open and am looking forward to getting into it!
I am thinking of trying Graphic Novels- perhaps starting a thread on graphic novels if there is enough interest
Emma wrote: "I just began Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. This is my first foray into Gaiman and am not really sure what to expect. But I am leaving my mind open and am looking forward to getting into it!"Neverwhere is my favorite of Niel Gaiman's books. You may have a hard time riding the subway afterward though.
I am reading Faithful Place
by Tana French.I am really enjoying this book. Ms. French is getting better and better with every novel. Frank Mackey is by far my favorite of her protagonist.
Rick wrote: "I am thinking of trying Graphic Novels- perhaps starting a thread on graphic novels if there is enough interest"I've been getting into graphic novels lately. I just recently read the first issue of "Y: The Last Man" which is really good and I read the 1992 pulitzer prize winning Mauz which is amazing!
As for what I'm reading, I'm just reading Pillars of the Earth as of now. I just recently finished MEmoirs of Cleopatra which was fantastic. I finished I, Claudius today and after a month of reading it off and on I finished The First Man in Rome. I got my ancient Rome/Egypt fix for a while now I'm going to move up a couple centuries or maybe read something modern day! haha!
Emma, I was unsure about his work, too, but really enjoyed Neverwhere. I hope to read more of his work one of these days.
Martha wrote: "Emma, I was unsure about his work, too, but really enjoyed Neverwhere. I hope to read more of his work one of these days."Martha/Emma -- Neil Gaiman is so worth your time.
Stardust is wonderful, but I love his children's books best. Coraline is good, but you must read
The Graveyard Book
. It is like the Jungle Book but only in a Highgate Cemetery and with ghost!
Rick wrote: "I am thinking of trying Graphic Novels- perhaps starting a thread on graphic novels if there is enough interest"My son swore off reading a while back. He discovered Alan Moore. Well, he discovered the movies based on the books. But, the movies made him want to read the books...which he enjoyed. I have a hard time getting him to read, but he loves graphic novels. It's the only thing I can guaranteed get him to read. I believe that some of Moore's work is considered some of the best modern fiction published. I think it's like any other genre, some of it's gold and some of it's garbage.

Emma wrote: "I just began Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. This is my first foray into Gaiman and am not really sure what to expect. Rick wrote: "Flora wrote: "Rick wrote: "Flora wrote: "I just finished The Thirteenth Tale which I loved. This is one that I am sure I will re-read. I hope things start to pull together soon.
Kyle, my friend and I are really liking the King Raven trilogy so far! We should finish it, I would guess, by at least the latter part of October, and yes, I'll try to post some general thoughts about it then. In the meantime, you can read my review of Hood here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/... .Rick, the 1,000 unread books you have makes me feel a bit better about my 200+ book to-read shelf! :-)
Just reread Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography, Roland Barthes' book on photography.... A family photo my dad recently sent to me got me thinking about that book. My full review can be read at: www.the-reading-list.com
Sherlock Holmes Volume 1. Reading this one because it's bloody time I do. :) So far, I'm loving every word. Funny, I keep thinking about Agent Pendergast from the Lincoln/Child series. Humm, I wonder if he was fashioned after Sherlock?
I finally finished The Late, Lamented Molly Marx by Sally Koslow. Although I really liked the beginning and very end of this book, the rest of the book was disappointing, and I feel like I have been reading it forever.
Now I am reading The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen which is a really cute, light read.
I know the last thing I needed was to start another book, especially another long book. But, just started The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I have this one and the second sitting in the pile at home. Just got notified by the library that the third book in the trilogy is in, so I have 21 days to read all three.
