Shirley (stampartiste) | 1008 comments Thank you, Sara. No rush. I just didn't sign up when The Illustrated Man was first brought up because I didn't know what my schedule was going to look like. Now that I know, I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss it. It's been a long time since I've read Ray Bradbury.

The thread is up. It is our only buddy read for April...wonder if this is just a very busy month for everyone? At any rate, I will see you there, my library just sent me a notice that my copy is in.

Great! You'll have insight we don't, I'm sure.

I've learned, with books in translation, to pick the version that seems the most interesting and readable for my first time through. I'll probably use Falen - which ones have you read and what are you using this time through?

April | 400 comments I thought somewhere in this group someone was reading The Death of Ivan Ilych...or was it just nominated somewhere? Not sure if it is possible to add it for this month, but i have been reading it.

April, we have read both The Death of Ivan Ilych
discussion here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

and The Death of Ivan Ilych and Other Stories
discussion here:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

You may comment on either thread, depending on whether you are reading only the stand-alone story or all of the collection.

message 56: by Sam (new)

Sam | 1088 comments Anybody up for a read of Edward Abbey's The Monkey Wrench Gang for July as part of our revisiting the 20th century series? I am presuming most of you know the book or the author, but if not the book is a classic, western environmental activist, political comic novel.

message 57: by Teri-K (new)

Teri-K | 1062 comments a couple of people have said they'd like to read Eugene Onegin this summer. How does June sound? Or we can do July, I'd just like to know.

June would be fine for me

(or July ;o) )

message 59: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 347 comments I will join you and can do either June or July

message 60: by Sue (new)

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3694 comments I'm checking in to see if people are still in for the June buddy read of the Pulitzer winning A Fable by William Faulkner. I would love to tackle this with a group

If so, when do people plan to start? I usually like to start buddy reads in the 2nd half of the month to leave room for the bigger group reads if needed. If others are starting right away, then I'll try to adjust.

message 61: by Teri-K (new)

Teri-K | 1062 comments Let's read Eugene Onegin in June, then, if Sara can schedule it for us.

message 62: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5188 comments Yes Sue. I am reading A Fable. The second half the month sounds good.

I am still plannimg on this. The second half of June is fine.

I have A Fable on my calendar, Sue. I think mid-month will work well.

I will put it on the schedule, Teri.

Sara (phantomswife) | 9406 comments Mod
Just a reminder, Terry. We also have The Realms of Gold scheduled for June. Is this still going to work for you?

message 67: by CJ (new)

CJ | 56 comments I'd be interested in reading Eugene Onegin with you all. June, July, August, any works for me.

I have put Eugene Onegin on the schedule for June.

message 69: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2370 comments Sara, as much as I would like to read Realms of Gold in June, I am way behind in my planned reading this year, due to very difficult outside circumstances beyond my control. I think it best for me to forego this book for now.

Teri-K | 1062 comments CJ wrote: "I'd be interested in reading Eugene Onegin with you all. June, July, August, any works for me."

Yeah! We'll plan for June and see how it goes. Have you read it before? I haven't.

I totally understand, Terry. I am overbooked, so I was wondering how on earth I was going to fit it in. Since it was only the two of us, I am going to take it off the schedule. If we decide to read it later, we can put it on again. Hope life improves and gets back under control again!

message 72: by Sue (new)

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3694 comments I'm thrilled to hear that, Sara, Cynda and Sam are still on for A Fable and don't mind starting the second half. I look forward to all of your insights to get through this.

I read Light in August early this year and found that one surprisingly easy to read, but I think for this one it will be much better with a group.

I read in college and have only faint memories of it. June works for me!

Terry | 2370 comments Thanks, Sara. Let’s revisit Drabble sometime later this year or next. I feel like this year is flying by and I need to step up my game to catch up,

message 75: by Elise (new)

Elise | 1 comments Hello, I don’t have a particular classic book in mind right now but I would like to find a buddy. I don’t really know how this function works because I just joined the group and Goodreads. Personally I’d like to pair with someone who we can keep each other accountable for reading the book of our choosing. Basically I’d appreciate a body double to get me reading again.

message 76: by Sara, Old School Classics (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 9406 comments Mod
Elise, if you can identify a book you would like to read, you can post that here and someone else who is interested in reading it will pair up with you. Alternatively, you could check the schedule posted at the top of this thread and see if there is a book already there that you would like to read and then just join in. Also, you might find one of the group reads is appealing and join that discussion thread.

Happy reading.

Sara (phantomswife) | 9406 comments Mod
The threads for A Fable by William Faulkner and Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin are up. The Onegin thread was once a group read, so be aware there will be spoilers if you read above the most recent post.

message 81: by April (new)

April | 400 comments Do you mean the threads are ready?
I will look for them.

But a quick update, so not going to get to a Fable this week, or well, maybe by the second half. I have to finish up some leftover May books first, as well as a couple others that are due back soon.

message 82: by April (new)

April | 400 comments Quick question- are we still doing the Emily Dickensen next month?

message 83: by CJ (new)

CJ | 56 comments I know Sarah and some others were planning on reading Sweet Thursday by Steinbeck for July but my library hold likely won't be in before August (Steinbeck is rather popular with the library crowd). So I will be late in joining that buddy read, if it starts next month.

message 84: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2370 comments On the schedule for July is The Widows of Eastwick?

Cynda, are you still interested? Anyone else?

message 85: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5188 comments Yes Terry. I have the library book on my table waiting for July :)

message 86: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5188 comments Yes April to the Emily Dickinsen!
I just received my copy of Selected Poems & Letters of Emily Dickinson edited by Robert N Linscott.

Sam | 1088 comments Terry wrote: "On the schedule for July is The Widows of Eastwick?

At the moment I think I will pass on the sequel, given my other reading commitments with the group. Somewhere down the line, I would like to return to Updike's short stories, to compare them to some other short story writers of the period and the LOA two volume set of John Updike: The Collected Stories: A Library of America Boxed Set will probably be my go to book if I revisit. There are also other novels to pursue but I want to catch up on other writers first.

@ Terry. Terry maybe Widows of Eastwick will be just the thing :)

I have set up your thread of The Widows of Eastwick and one for Sweet Thursday. Hope you pop right out of the slump, Terry.

message 96: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2370 comments Thanks, Sara. Actually, I spent a lot of time yesterday listening to Queens of Crime by Marie Benedict and really enjoying it. It’s a new novel set in the early 1930s about five female mystery writers (including Agatha Christie snd Dorothy Sayers) who set out to solve a crime. I think I was just ready to be immersed in a plot driven novel.
