Is there a book that you'd like to buddy read?

If you're interested in reading a specific book, outside of the group reads, then here's the place to post and find a buddy!

(This thread is active January 1, 2025. The previous thread has been archived.)

This is the last post made on the previous thread (from Kathleen) :

The group read Cannery Row in early 2024, and now a few of us would like to read the sequel Sweet Thursday. If anyone is interested, please mention when the best time would be for you. Months are filling up fast already, and I'm thinking maybe summertime?

message 3: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2369 comments Sara, Something by Margaret Drabble this summer?

message 4: by Sara, Old School Classics (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 9403 comments Mod
Absolutely. Did we agree on The Realms of Gold? Does June work?

message 5: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2369 comments Realms of Gold in June it is!

Anyone who would like to join us, just put it on your calendar. Thanks, Terry!

I am in for Sweet Thursday if we do it in the summer. I will have to re-read Cannery Row beforehand, since I haven't any details left in my mind from the previous read. Did you have a month in mind, Kathleen?

message 8: by CJ (new)

CJ | 56 comments A summer buddy read of Steinbeck? I'm interested! Cannery Row isn't a long one so I can most likely fit it in before you all start.

message 9: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5456 comments I'm fine with any month summer or later, Sara. (Books are already piling up on me.) Glad to see your interest, CJ!

I know! How does that happen? I am going to say we pencil it in for July and see how that works for others. We can always move it forward or back if needed.

Cynda | 5188 comments Yes please July read of Sweet Thursday.

message 12: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5188 comments Would anyone be interested in reading The Complete Works of Emily Dickinson? Maybe starting in July to make it a second-half-of-year project?

I am more interested in reading just her poetry - Perhaps the first three series of poems?

Cannery Row, fantastic read, I am interested in reading the sequel, and this year maybe, I'm not sure

I am interested in Emily Dickinson, I have this one on my shelf Emily Dickinson: Selected Poems, and can't fit in a book this long this year.

Katy mentions Poems by Emily Dickinson, Three Series, Complete, I just had a look and see it's in the public domain, yeah I might be able to do this one.

message 16: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5188 comments Yesh, I agree that we each read the parts we want. Would that work? Maybe can set up sections different types writing? Such as prose and poetry would work for me. Then we can just have open forum?

Does that sound workable Katy?

Sounds good. I've recorded it down for July with a note that it may change pending others' input. (I'm still not getting notifications on here for threads I'm checked for notifications, but I'll try to check back to this thread for updates)

message 20: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5188 comments Okay good. Sara, some of us want to read Emily Dickinson the second half of the year starting July 1st until end of December. Would you please set up two threads for us--one for poetry and one for prose?

message 21: by Sara, Old School Classics (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 9403 comments Mod
I have added both to the schedule, Cynda.

Sue and I are planning a buddy read of A Fable by William Faulkner for June. It is a Pulitzer prize winner and therefore a must for the both of us. If anyone would like to join, I think Faulkner with a group is a bit more doable than Faulkner alone.

message 23: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2369 comments Years ago, after reading Light in August and The Sound and the Fury, I went through a Faulkner phase and read a lot of his works at that time. A Fable is one I did not read. It sounds good, but I want to see how I am doing with everything else on plate before committing to more. It is tempting.

message 24: by Sara, Old School Classics (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 9403 comments Mod
Love to have you join in, Terry. I know about the full plate, though. How did I get this overbooked already?

message 25: by Cynda (new)

Cynda | 5188 comments A Fable is tempting too. I will have to see how things go.

Great Cynda and Katy. I think this one might be a chore to go at alone.

message 32: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2369 comments How about reading The Widows of Eastwick in July?

message 38: by April (new)

April | 400 comments I really do one of these days, but i have been struggling so much with Infinite Jest, i am afraid to add any more long reads for a while. Cant really say when i will be free yet.

Also, question- is there a current buddy read list/schedule that we can all see? Or is one in the works? Or do we just have to rememeber on our own what we signed up for? Lol

(Sara -- Sorry if this isn't the right place to post this, in which case feel free to delete this post)

message 46: by Franky (new)

Franky | 518 comments I know we read The Good Earth last June for the New School selection. Would anyone want to do a buddy read for the sequel to this novel, Sons? Maybe sometime in this summer, June or July?

Cynda | 5188 comments More the better, Milja :)

Shirley (stampartiste) | 1008 comments Hi, Sara~. I’m just checking to see if The Illustrated Man is still on the schedule for April. I don’t see a thread for it. Thank you.

It is, Shirley. I do not usually set up the threads until I do my other chores, so it will be up before the end of the day.
