Buddy Read Requests
Thanks Savita. I will have three surgeries total scheduled to improve my mobility. One down. Two to go.
Terry wrote: "Greg. I’m excited that so many people are joining our Buddy Read for The English Patient in March!"Me too!
Cynda wrote: "Thanks Savita. I will have three surgeries total scheduled to improve my mobility. One down. Two to go."Sending strength and healing as you go through all of this, Cynda. And I'm sure some great books will help!
Thank you Terry and Kathleen. I will go to the same rehab facility afterwards that I did last time. They did a fine job. I wish they had better food 😄
Shawn wrote: "I’m going to jump in on The English Patient in March also."Glad to have you join us Shawn. Everyone is very welcome!
With this much interest, I will nominate this for the March group read. If this many group members are reading, it would be nice to have it added to the bookshelf. Everyone please remember to vote. Of course, if it does not win, I will set up the thread for a buddy read.
Sara wrote: "With this much interest, I will nominate this for the March group read. If this many group members are reading, it would be nice to have it added to the bookshelf. Everyone please remember to vote...."Great idea!

Can we get an update on whether this buddy read is still on, when and if any other members are joining?
Sara wrote: "With this much interest, I will nominate this for the March group read. If this many group members are reading, it would be nice to have it added to the bookshelf. Everyone please remember to vote...."That sounds great Sara! It would be nice to have a very active group read! And if it doesn't win, we can still do the buddy read as you say.
I have read it already, but as you guys were talking I thought what a good discussion it would make and I would be in for a re-read. Thank you for putting it out there, Greg.
Sara wrote: "I have read it already, but as you guys were talking I thought what a good discussion it would make and I would be in for a re-read. Thank you for putting it out there, Greg."Fantastic to have another shared read with you Sara, and my pleasure! I think it was Terry who first had the idea after I mentioned not having read it yet. I'm looking forward to it!
Ascanio wrote: "I noticed that several people have added Satantango to their bookshelves. If anyone is interested in discussing it, I will be reading it between late October and early November (alr..."There was a decent interest in Satantango for a group read in December, probably more than we'll ever see for Krasznahorkai nomination ever again. . Ascanio was suggesting a buddy read from now through November. I suggest if there is sufficient interest, to making Satantango a buddy read for November/December. With the intent of encouraging participation, I am asking whether there is an easy way to notify members who voted for the book for December that a buddy read is potentially scheduled? I had been wondering this for some of the other books that have done well in the polls but seem of limited interest when it comes to buddy reads, like Diderot's Nun for example. But I do not wish to incur a lot of work for anyone. Mods have access to notifying lists of members which seems to reach people that are getting spotty notifications. Is it doable to just target members that voted in the poll?
Sam wrote: "Ascanio wrote: "...like Diderot's Nun for example"Thanks for your interest, Sam. I read Satantango last week, but I could still take part in a discussion. I'm just popping in to remind that a buddy read of Diderot's The Nun is scheduled for December (two participants).
Sam wrote: "I suggest if there is sufficient interest, to making Satantango a buddy read for November/December.." I voted for it, and I would join one if we have it Sam
Greg wrote: "Sam wrote: "I suggest if there is sufficient interest, to making Satantango a buddy read for November/December.." I voted for it, and I would join one if we have it Sam"
The discussion aspect is what I had in mind. As Ascanio I hope will agree, the novel is worth discussing.
Sam wrote: "...the novel is worth discussing."I can easily see several points of interest. For my part, I would take advantage of the opportunity to read a second novel by the same author.
Cynda wrote: "Thanks Savita. I will have three surgeries total scheduled to improve my mobility. One down. Two to go."Soon all 3 surgeries will be done and over with , Cynda , and may kind angels be with you in an uneventful pathway to good recovery . God bless
Sara wrote: "I have read it already, but as you guys were talking I thought what a good discussion it would make and I would be in for a re-read. Thank you for putting it out there, Greg."How very nice , Sara , that you're joining the read of The English Patient 😊 . It's a re-read for Connie , too , so it must be a really good book !
Sam, as far as I know, there is no provision for mods to reach a group of individuals beyond what another member can do. A mod can send a message to the entire group or to an individual alone.
Perhaps a comment in the poll comments section at the end of voting, to say you are doing a buddy read of a losing nomination, would reach interested voters.

I will try to remember that before the poll ends. Thanks Sara.

In any case, I would welcome a discussion on it, but I won't be starting reading it until January.

I just finished reading it this week.
Wishing everyone successful procedures and speedy recoveries! Now, back to the thread. I might be interested in a couple, but we will see. I'm trying to slow down still these days. But I wanted to say about The English Patient. Sounds a lot like A Farewell to Arms?
Cynda wrote: "Namaste Savita."Oh , Cynda , I am absolutely taken by surprise and deeply touched by your response in my own language ! Such an amazingly sweet way of responding.... 💖 !

It'll be lovely if you could join The English Patient read , April ! ... though , from your previous comments , you seem to be a bit hard pressed for time .
Though I haven't read any of the two books you've mentioned, I have read the blurb of The English Patient, and the latter title seems to have a sad , a painful, even a ? proud ( depending on the context and story of A Farewell to Arms )resonance with the former title 🤔 . Maybe the other members will be able to clarify.
Having seen the movie, I can say, without giving anything away, that the English Patient has a singular and complicated plot. After we read the book, I recommend watching the movie, but not before.
In December, we will read Samuel Beckett's fourth novel: Mercier et Camier, 120 pages. In the discussion already underway, you can find introductory notes on the author and his early works. I hope to see you there!
Ascanio wrote: "In December, we will read Samuel Beckett's fourth novel: Mercier et Camier, 120 pages. In the discussion already underway, you can find introductory notes on the author and his early works. I hope ..."So many books in French, so little time to improve on it.

Sam, will you join us for The Nun? Because me and Ascanio was going to private message since there were only going to be two of us but if you want to join then we can schedule the thread for December? :)

I might join in for Our Mutual Friend. Depends on timing. I want to reread it with my partner because I think he'd like it. Apparently it's a little different from Dickens other work, but I wouldn't know since the only other Dickens I read was his A Christmas Carol. I thought Our Mutual Friend had a lot of very modern elements and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It's great you will be joining. Looking forward to the BR. I haven't read this one so far.
Luffy and Klowey, what timing works for reading Our Mutual Friend? How about April or May? It’s a long book and could take me more than a month to get through it.
Terry wrote: "Luffy and Klowey, what timing works for reading Our Mutual Friend? How about April or May? It’s a long book and could take me more than a month to get through it."Either month is okay with me, Terry.
Terry wrote: "Did someone mention reading Our Mutual Friend next year? If so, I would join that."Yes, Terry, I was talking to Sara about reading it. I would be happy to do a buddy read together & it looks like some others might be interested also! April or May would be fine with me :)
Terry wrote: "Luffy and Klowey, what timing works for reading Our Mutual Friend? How about April or May? It’s a long book and could take me more than a month to get through it."Yes, that timing would work well.
Sara, Terris, Luffy and Klowey will be joining me to read Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens next year. Can you please put us on the Buddy Read schedule for April?
My previous post was directed to Sara, but I didn’t mean to imply that she was joining us. However, I do invite others to join in. 😊
Terris wrote: "Thank you, Sara! It's on my April list now! :)"Hmm .... well, my loss , really 😟😕🤔 😥 ... so many great reads happening close to each other , I will not be able to join for this Charles Dickens read ( not read Charles Dickens for quite sometime , and Sara has just mentioned Positively Dickens at his best ! What can I say except that it's my unfortunate loss ! Actually, My Brother Michael is probably being scheduled in April , and that , too , I don't want to miss ( I've become an absolute fan of M. Stewart ) . Our Mutual Friend is quite a long book .. 600 pages kindle book , and 880 pages paperback. Terry said she'll take a month to finish it , but , if I were to read it , it would take me three months , I suppose. Incidentally , Our Mutual Friend is free on Amazon kindle .
