Sea of Tranquility
by Emily St. John MandelMandel's books are always off the beaten path. In this novel, characters experiencing a glitch in spacetime leads to speculation about all sorts of interesting things: family, love, blame, science, pandemics, reality, and more.
Very good story. 4 stars

Thank goodness I can count on Irish author John Boyne to write interesting, thought-provoking stories. Earth, the latest in his Elements quartet of linked novels, is up there with the best of them.
My review of Earth

Just finished How to Find Your Way in the Dark,A solid 4 stars for me. Anyone have suggestions on similar books that have a bit more of a literary edge?
Thanks :)
From my 2018 backlist shelf:
The Suffering of Strangers by Caro Ramsay ⭐⭐⭐⭐.1 https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Under the Paper Moon by Shaina Steinberg.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I can see the appeal of Kill Your Husbands by popular young Aussie author Jack Heath, but the mixup between the print version and the audio rather spoiled the experience for me. Jack was gracious enough to explain what happened in a long comment, for which he deserves a lot of credit. Have a look.
My review of Kill Your Husbands
Pulitzer winning American author Andrew Sean Greer has written a warm, funny account of his and his mother's road trip, My Mother and Other Wild Animals. They are great friends but mismatched travel companions. It's short and enjoyable.

What Happened to Nina
was totally gripping. My five star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Lamorna Wink
by Martha GrimesRichard Jury #16 but in reality there is very little of Jury. The book mostly follows Melrose Plant as he rents a large vacant house as a get-away and walks right into several murders. I've been reading the series in order and this is one of the best. Very well done, I liked it a lot. 4 stars.
I read Don't Let the Devil Ride by Ace Atkins It is an entertaining private eye thriller, set in Memphis, Tennessee. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Her Dying Secret by Lisa Regan is the 20th in her Detective Josie Quinn series, where Josie and the team are faced with a very difficult case to solve.review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Cutthroat
by Steve BrewerMy copy was a trade paperback without page numbers. This is a well-constructed thriller about a big guy (reminded me somewhat of Reacher) employed as a fixer by a very rich family in Northern California. The family becomes involved in ugly African politics with deadly results for several people, American as well as African. I liked it OK but the big shoot-em-up at the end kind of lost me. 3 stars.

I've finished reading Ordinary Human Failings by Megan Nolan, on this year's long list for the Women's Prize for Fiction. The book examines the family of a ten year old girl accused of murdering a toddler and the tabloid journalist who will do anything to get their story to make a name for himself. This should have been a novel I would have liked, but it just didn't quite agree with me.
The Broken Afternoon
had a very different feel than the first in the series. My 3.5 star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Dead Tired
combines plenty of humor with a strong murder investigation. My four star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Hi Everyone, I am carrying out research on Crime and Mystery readership opinions, used solely for my MA publishing project. I have attached below the link to my very short, anonymous questionnaire and I would greatly appreciate if anyone could take a few minutes to share their opinions regarding popular tropes, design preferences etc. As it is an anonymously completed questionnaire, I will consider submission of answers as informed consent.
