Character-Driven
Published In a Year Of The Dragon

Hybrid Genre: Killers of the Flower Moon History & Mystery. The book pulled off the mystery part much better than the movie, which felt self-indulgent on Scorsese's part.
Includes a Wedding: The People we Hate at the Wedding I could not have hated the book more. However, I found the movie fun fluff with a rather great cast. I quite liked the 2017 adaptation of the book. I felt the subtle changes made to the narrator and his relationship with with Sophia made for a more interesting scenario.
Character-Driven: Crooked House
(I kept jumping around on which book I would use for this, but in the end I wanted a movie I hadn't previously seen. Agatha is not primarily known for her stunning character development, but in this one, it all happened because of one very warped personality.) I like the 2017 adaptation. The subtle changes to the narrator and his relationship with Sophia made a more palatable romance.
Published In a Year Of The Dragon: Stormbreaker I landed on this 2000 title as it filled prompts in three other challenges I’m working on. Initially I planned on watching the 2006 movie, with Ewen McGregor. I began it on some streaming service or the other, only to have it disappear when I paused it to leave the county. Eventually, I found what I think may be an ongoing series on Prime. So far I stopped at the first episode. I did like the actor playing Alex Rider much better in this one than I did the 2006 one.

This is the first book in the series Women's Murder Club www.goodreads.com/series/40469-women-... in it's Norwegian translation. I have read it once before, in 2005, but I have not seen the TV series so I don't know if any of the episodes is based on the first book.

It covers #7 at least 4 Points of View.

No matter how hard I try I just don't like to read Jane Austen (what is wrong with me, lol). However, I absolutely love the movies...
X April – June: Includes a wedding: A Walk To Remember
Short story, but I love the movie way better.
X July – September: A character-driven story: Me Before You. Such good story. hearfelt
X October – December: Published in a Year of the Dragon: The Fault In Our Stars. Loved this, both of them; book and movie, I felt were on point.

Character driven book

Thanks, had not picked a book for that prompt!

For hybrid genre I read Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne, 2.5 Stars, and watched the PBS Miniseries (8 episodes) with David Tennant and gave it 5 Stars.

Still need to decide on the book/movie
January – March: Hybrid genre
April – June: Includes a wedding
July – September: A character-driven story
October – December: Published in a Year of the Dragon

Dorothy Sayers – Gaudy Nights
A book that crosses all kinds of genre lines-- It's an academic thriller, a romance and a feminist philosophy book. I don't know what more 'educated' people think of it, but that list sounds like all hybrid genre to me. It might even qualify as the forerunner, if not the origin, of the romantic suspense genre.
April – June: Includes a wedding
Wilkie Collins – The Woman in White
July – September: A character-driven story
Graham Greene – The Quiet American
October – December: Published in a Year of the Dragon
Arnaldur Indriðason – Jar City

The Lost Bookshop!
New author for me, has romance, magic and suspense ..plus a magical house lol

Entirely up to you! I'm choosing to use different books but many aren't.

You could try the TV show on AMC. The first season was awesome awesome awesome! The second season starts in May, I think.

Rebecca is great but it doesn't have a wedding scene. It references the wedding but the wedding does not take place in the book (skips from going to get married to married) Don't know if that is a deal breaker but wanted you to know.

Under the Bridge
I love both. This is one of those instances where I can't decide which I like more.
The kids on the show are terrifying. And don't get me started on the chemistry between Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough. I ship their characters for life now!
And Godfrey writes in a way that's hauntingly poetic. I want to feel bad for the kids because of how screwed up their lives were, but at the same time I can't because of what they did and the life they took.

✅ Includes a Wedding: The Duke and I (watched Bridgerton Season 1)
Character-Driven: TBD

A 2024 Bonus Challenge
Let’s read. And watch!
Our “Read It, Watch It” is an optional, bonus challenge that ties into the prompts you’re already reading for the 2024 challenge! Over the course of the year, we’ll be reading, watching, and discussing books and movies that fit four of our 2024 prompts. This is a fun way to dive deeper into a story and see the films or shows that were inspired by it (or vice versa)!
How it works:
1) Our “Read It, Watch It” challenge has four prompts to be completed (read and watched) during a specific quarter of the year.
This year’s prompts are:
January – March: Hybrid genre
April – June: Includes a wedding
July – September: A character-driven story
October – December: Published in a Year of the Dragon
2) For each of the four prompts, pick a book that matches the prompt but ALSO has a movie and/or TV adaptation. As always, feel free to get creative with your book choice.
3) During the corresponding months, read it, watch it, and discuss! Join the Facebook group and watch for specific discussion threads related to our Read It, Watch It challenge! These discussions will be hosted by a longtime 52 Book Club member, and inspiration for the original 52 Book Club Read It, Watch It challenge — Melissa Hoyt!
Questions and tips:
a) I already have a book picked for one of these prompts but it doesn’t have a movie adaptation! What do I do?
This challenge is an optional bonus challenge and there is no pressure to complete any or all of it. If you’ve already read a book without a movie or TV adaptation for one of these prompts, you’re welcome to simply skip that prompt on this Read It, Watch It challenge.
Alternatively, you could also decide to complete that prompt twice — once for the regular 2024 challenge, and once more for this Read It, Watch It challenge.
b) Does the movie have to be a direct adaptation of the book?
No. As always, feel free to get creative with this bonus challenge. For example, you could choose to read Pride and Prejudice for the prompt “Includes a wedding.” You could then watch a direct adaptation of the book, or choose a looser interpretation such as Bridget Jones's Diary or Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
As another example of how creative you can get with this challenge: You might choose to read the book A Court of Thorns and Roses for the prompt “Hybrid Genre.” While a TV adaption of the book hasn’t been released yet, you could decide to watch the movie, Beauty and the Beast because the book was inspired by a retelling of that fairytale.
As always, it is up to you how flexible you’d like to be with your interpretation of each prompt.
c) Does a TV series count for this challenge?
Absolutely!
