Jane (PS) | 24334 comments 1. Introduce yourself to your team. Let your team members know where you are from. This is a 'nice to know' when categories are announced and when team-mates can expect other members to post their book choices.

2. Captain Grinder - reserve a couple of posts in this thread tracking your team's book selection and completion. (Alternatively they could convert a chat comment to the tracking post/s.)

3. Name your team. Using this round's theme, come up with a fun name. Given we are an open/public group with no age limit, so please make sure any chosen name is smart, not smutty ;)

Please PM your name to Jane(PS) by 14 September

4. If you have a private profile, please 'friend' your team-mates. This is really important, because without this, your team-mates can't see your shelves to select a books under option 2. (It will also help with one of the categories in this round!)

5. Please post your book selections/completions in the format provided below. (This format is also posted in both the Q&A and Sign-Up threads.) We need to know the week that each book corresponds to, the page numbers, and how the book qualifies including links to lists/shelves (where applicable), etc. I can't stress this enough. When in doubt - link it*!

* don't link to your review in your completion post - reviews in your completion posts should be included in full in that post.

You don't want to start reading a book and then find it doesn't meet the requirements because some information (eg page count or theme link) was missing from your original post.

I will be monitoring this and your book will not be considered complete until I am satisfied that your selection and completion posts comply with the format rules of the challenge.

Remember - you can ONLY change your book selection in the week that the theme is called.

6. You MUST check in with your team each week, ideally once the theme is announced. Please let your team know if you expect to have spotty communication or are on holidays or having an operation, etc.

7. When you post the completion of your book, you must post a review; enough for us to know you have actually read the book. Please don't link to a review. You must post the review in this thread.

8. Re-reads are allowed but you can't read the same book twice within this challenge.

9. There is no prize for the winning team - bragging rights only :)

10. Each week, the theme will be announced in the Q&A/Announcement thread. The full list of themes announced during this round will be maintained in msg 1 of that thread.

The Rule on the Pass Option
* Each team can only have ONE member using their pass each week.
* Each member can only use that pass once each 5 weeks.
* This means that one or two team members (dependent upon the size of your team) will miss using a pass in each 5 week block.
* No-one can use the pass option in the last week of the challenge.
* In the final week Option 2 has altered and I will be allocating each team another team from which their book selection must be chosen :)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Key selection and completion post information. You must have ALL elements in your book posts.

For selection post Option 1 you must have:
Week #
Bookcover/link
Page numbers
How the book qualifies - please note which qualifying bookshelf/list you are using or the tags that justifies that it works.
If the theme is based off the bookcover, post the cover. If there is a letter count in the title, publication date etc, please note these details.

For selection post Option 2 you must have:
Week #
Bookcover/link
Page numbers
Name of the team-member, their star rating, the date they read the book.

For selection post Option 3 you must have:
Week #
PASS

For the completion post you must have:
Week #
Bookcover/link
Rating (1-5)
Review

Please DO NOT CHAT in these selction/completion posts. It needs to be super clear.

If you 'waffle' about your decided book - please REPOST your selection once you decide. DO NOT go back and edit your waffling post.

IF YOU NEED TO CORRECT A POST FOR MISSING INFORMATION or because the didn't qualify etc, please REPOST this information in a NEW post. I don't want to have to keep going backwards in the thread.

Got A Latte to Read

message 20: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Robinson (librariansdaughter77) | 1485 comments Hi All,
So sorry to be late -

I'm Maggie, I'm from CT. I'm a SAHM to two teens. One is a HS senior and the other is an 8th grader. I'm working on what my second career is going to be.

I'm trying to cut back on my reading challenge obsession. However, my TBR is telling me that reading challenges help get books read, so here we are. 😆

I mainly read romance and I read just about anything in that area.
I haven't captained any of the challenges in awhile, so bear with me as I find my footing. I have notifications on for this thread so I will be responding as those come through.

message 21: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (aellen) | 973 comments Hi everyone!

This is my third time at the PTP challenge and I'm excited to get started! :)

I'm Ariel and am from Florida. I am a substitute teacher and reading is my main hobby - next to writing. I plan on going back to school for accreditation to be a librarian.

I am with you on that, Maggie. I read a good percentage of romance and various genres within that. I especially love mystery/suspense romance.

message 22: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 629 comments Hello all. I'm Nicole and I live in Richmond, va. I am a nursing director. I have a very stressful job so i read romance to unwind. I am not the fastest reader but I can keep up. I like all romance, my least favorite is historical. I have 2 dogs and a cat. I am married. My youngest just turned 18. So I am nearing the empty nest stage. I am going to be a grandmother for the first time in February.

I like the name got a latte to read for our group. This is one of my favorite challenges. I don't do a great job of updating my read list. If you find something on it you want to read let me know.

message 23: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Robinson (librariansdaughter77) | 1485 comments Hi Ariel and Nicole,

Thanks for checking in!

Ariel my mom was a librarian. It's the reason my blog is The Librarian's Daughter. I wish you luck on getting your accreditation!
I am also a writer, and have been writing short stories. I'm trying my hand at a longer format and have been working on outlining a few of my short stories into possibly novellas or novel length stories.

Nicole, I can understand the stress of your job! No worries about being fast or slow with reading. Everyone reads at their own pace and from what I remember of this challenge I believe it was a book a week. I'm also not a historical romance lover, although I have found a few authors who write it well. The Bachelor Challenge has helped me along with that one. Congratulations on becoming a grandmother! That is so much fun!

message 24: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Robinson (librariansdaughter77) | 1485 comments We just need Kat and Nikki to check in which I'm sure they will do shortly. I believe I received a friend request from Kat.

Once we have everyone in, and we have a name we'll be good to go for reading.

message 25: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (aellen) | 973 comments Thank you. I'm applying to schools this year for next fall so I'm excited. I have been writing recreationally for my entire life - stories, poems, etc. I have plans on writing a childrens series so hopefully that comes to fruition at in the near future.

I like the "Got a Latte to Read" suggestion that Nicole gave.

Nikki the Sapphired Book Dragon AKA NixieNut (sapphireddragon) | 675 comments HI all, I am Nikki and I live in Sydney, Australia. I work in sales support admin for a big company and like other reading is a great relaxation for me. I live with my partner, my 11 year old daughter, cat, Charlie and Dog, Ava.

I read mostly paranormal romance and cozies but read all romance and other genres as the mood takes me.

Its been a couple of years since i last participated in pass the parcel but I am looking forward to it

I am happy with "Got a Latte to Read" as a team name also

Kat (bookworm2017) | 943 comments Hi, I am Kat from Glasgow in Scotland. I work for a heart charity in a charity shop. It’s very dangerous as there’s books and I get 25% off too lol. I live with my fiancé John and my two cats Bonnie and Clyde. Their brother and sister.

I read contemporary romance and smut but also thrillers and crime and some general fiction and memoirs.

I’m happy with the name Got a latte to read. I played pass the parcel last time but this is only my second time.

Maggie Robinson (librariansdaughter77) | 1485 comments Hi Nikki and Kat! Thanks so much for checking in!

I'm looking forward to playing this round with everyone. I'm glad that reading is our escape and relaxation.

I'll let Jane know that we would like to be known as Got a Latte to Read for this round and we should be all set to start the round!

message 29: by Maggie (last edited Sep 15, 2023 11:10AM) (new)

Maggie Robinson (librariansdaughter77) | 1485 comments Hi all,
We'll receive our first call today for this challenge.
This first call will be our two week call.

Jane has noted that she will post the call between 3pm and 6pm tonight. (I believe these are EST times)

I will be watching the threads for the call notification, however I do need to attend my niece's birthday party this evening and will be leaving the house around 6pm EST.

Any one of us can post the call in here - I'm not picky about that. I just want to make sure it IS posted so that we all see it.

Another thing to keep in mind is the following:

Q: For a theme call, can I use a book I'm already reading?
A: No. Books must be started after the theme call. This is the same for all RRRC challenges. (You can start a book after a theme call but before you have posted your selection post.)

I grabbed this from the Q&A thread which is where the call will be posted.

I'm a multi reader and I know I have several "open" books going right now, so I needed to remind myself of this rule and figured it would be a good reminder to post for the team as well.

The Q&A thread is a valuable tool. I always suggest referring back to it. However we are a team. Any questions, suggestions; requests for help, or assistance, or recommendations are always welcome in this team thread.

My shelves are a bit of mess so if you ever need help determining if I've read a book or when - never feel shy about asking.

Finally, The instructions on how to create your selection and completion posts as well as clean blank copies of the selection posts and completion post templates are in this thread in Msg 3
I suggest always going back to grab a clean copy to start you posts to help avoid copy and paste errors. (Not that this isn't something I struggle with myself LOL)

I'm excited to be kicking this round of PtP off with you all!

Hi Kat,
Nicole's book is fine for this week's call.
I double checked the wording on the theme.
This is what Jane has posted in the thread.

Week 1
4. The two most commonly grown coffee bean types are C. arabica and C. robusta
Read a book written by two authors (or more)

All three of the authors for Nicole's book are listed on the main page of the book so we're good to go.

I also checked to see if two authors writing under a combined name would fit this prompt, and they would as well as long as we can provide documentation of it somewhere.

I was debating between the book I chose and two others by Piper Rayne and Christina Lauren.

Thanks for checking on this though! I know with all the other challenges going on the wording of the tasks can get wonky. It's always great to double check! 😊

Not a problem. It fits the prompt as written and posted by Jane. Otherwise I would have asked her about it. This is also our two week reading prompt so we have an extra week to read.
Which I also need as I am behind on ....... well, life overall these days LOL.

I'll be monitoring the thread this week to make sure I update above for Jane to check.

Thank you all for getting your selection posts in. I have updated comment so everyone's is up there.

Rating (1-5): 4 stars
Review:
It was so much fun to go back to Kate's world and I really enjoyed this story. My biggest complaint was that the story was too short. As always, I loved the world building and the vibrant characters, and while you could probably still enjoy this book without having read the previous series, having that knowledge made the story that much better. Can't wait to read more of this series.

Hi Maggie - the Selections need to be posted before the next call, but the completion posts can be later. The main thing is that you can't fall behind by more than 2 books. So in week 6, you may yet have to post completions for weeks 2 & 3 (and 6) but so long as one is completed and posted before the week 7 call, you can stay in the game.

Of course, keeping up to date is by far the preference ;)

Hope this makes sense :)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I will just note for everyone in the team, that if you post your broken link of your books in your selection posts, it makes is much easier for Maggie to track.

You are already linking to your book edition, so adding the link again and inserting a break/asterisks takes little time.

Its amazing how long looking up books and checking editions can take when you are tracking the books.

(This is not a requirement - just a suggestion to help our Captains :)

Hi Kat -
a book link Pride and Prejudice
the same book with its code broken [*book:Pride and Prejudice|1885]

They are exactly the same except that an asterisk has been place in the text of the link after inserting in the post.

It means that the Captain can copy that link in your post and use it in their tracking post without having to look up the book themselves and then make sure they have the correct page count edition that you have used.

Having been a Captain many times, I know I really appreciate it when the broken links are included :) Plus it saves on mistakes.

I thought for sure no one could top Hot Hair Jesse - but Gussy with his dressing and acting out romance characters and all of the brothers falling for little Olive (including Spence) was a hard sell for the best book in this series. This was nicely sparsed out with some good teary spots given that our MILF Susannah is a young widow. Overall, this book and series continue to rank as one of my favorites and one that I recommend to anyone looking for a solid story with minimal angst and a smooth read where the meshing of two authors is seamless in the story writing. I actually started Pen's book last night after finishing this one.
